VERSAILLES 400 LIVE

Jean Michel Jarre

Techno - Released February 23, 2024 | Columbia Local

Hi-Res
Always on the cutting edge of new technologies since his beginnings in the 70s at Pierre Schaeffer's GRM (the  music research group of the French Broadcasting and Television Office, where concrete and electronic music were born), Jean-Michel Jarre has conceptualized an augmented reality concert to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Palace of Versailles. The French artist, who had already given a concert in virtual reality for 2020's Fête de la Musique (a French music celebration that takes place on June 21st each year), set up his machines and donned his virtual reality headset once again in the famous Hall of Mirrors for an hour-long show on Christmas Day, December 25th, 2023. A limited audience was able to attend the "concert-production hybrid" live at the palace, but it was also broadcast to the metaverse to be watched via virtual reality. For Versailles 400, Jarre took an understated approach, with a concert lasting precisely an hour, a duration undoubtedly linked to the exceptional conditions imposed by the location. He starts off with music evocative of Jean-Baptiste Lully, using a harpsichord and vocals modified via a talk-box ("Le Château"), before going on to the hit "Epica Oxygène," delivering a rather rhythmic show, slowly but surely transforming the Hall of Mirrors into a techno rave or a new wing of the ISS. After the Egyptian pyramids and the Red Square, Jean-Michel Jarre can check yet another historical site off his list. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Oxygène

Jean Michel Jarre

Ambient - Released January 1, 1976 | Disques Dreyfus

Released in 1976, Oxygene proved to be a massive hit for French electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre. The son of film composer Maurice Jarre, the synthesizer player sought to create warmer sonic textures through the technology of the time, and the result was this pioneering six-part album. Oxygene's bizarrely creepy cover, featuring a skull underneath the peeled-away surface of the globe, belies the music's lush beauty, though it does point to haunting moments such as "Oxygene III." The record's most recognizable track is the majestic "Oxygene IV," which features percolating synth lines and spare, nearly imperceptible beats. While the album would lead Jarre to international fame, especially in his native France and the rest of Europe, it also proved to be a recording that he struggled to top, even going so far as to release a sequel, Oxygene 7-13, more than 20 years later. For aficionados of late-'70s electronic acts such as Tangerine Dream and Vangelis, this bold outing is essential.© Eric Schneider /TiVo

As the follow-up album to Oxygene, Equinoxe offers the same mesmerizing affect, with rapid spinning sequencer washes and bubbling synthesizer portions all lilting back and forth to stardust scatterings of electronic pastiches. Using more than 13 different types of synthesizers, Jarre combines whirling soundscapes of multi-textured effects, passages, and sometimes suites to culminate interesting electronic atmospheres. Never repeating the same sounds twice, it is obvious that the science fiction hype of the late '70s played a large part in the making of this album. Computerized rhythms and keyboard-soaked transitions scurry by, replaced by even quicker, more illustrious ones soon after. There is always a pulsating beat or a fluttering tempo happening somewhere in each of the tracks, which are titled as a numbered sequence one to eight. Each track harbors its own energy and electronic fleetness, but none are identical in sound or pace. So much electronic color is added to every track that it is impossible to concentrate on any particular segment, resulting in waves of synth drowning the ears at high tide.© Mike DeGagne /TiVo

Les chants magnétiques / Magnetic Fields

Jean Michel Jarre

Ambient - Released May 22, 1981 | Disques Dreyfus

Hi-Res
Les Chants Magnétiques was the third of Jean Michel Jarre's albums in a row to update Tangerine Dream's atmospheric sequencer trance for a synth pop and mainstream crossover audience. The side-long "Les Chants Magnetiques, Pt. 1" is the capstone of the album, while "Pt. 2" through "Pt. 5" move through driving electronic pop and several passages more indebted to Jarre's past in the musique concrète scene. It's often just as melodic and inventive as Oxygène, though not as consistently creative.© John Bush /TiVo

Les granges brûlées (Bande Originale du Film)

Jean Michel Jarre

Film Soundtracks - Released January 1, 1973 | Disques Dreyfus

Hi-Res
The CD issue of Jean-Michel Jarre's soundtrack to the Jean Chapon film Les Granges Brulées has been long overdue. An integral but less well-known part of the composer's catalog, it marks Jarre's first full immersion into film scoring and as such, it is an inquisitive, speculative works that illustrates concept more than it does nuance. In this case that's a plus. The themes here are rarely extended; they shift and jar the listener episodically, coursing form one "major" scene to the next without bothering much with serial elements. It's a compelling listen, but ultimately not terribly memorable. That said, it's a plus for fans who've been seeing expensive LP copies for decades now.© Thom Jurek /TiVo

The Concerts in China

Jean Michel Jarre

Techno - Released November 25, 2022 | Sony Music Catalog

Hi-Res
In 1981, just after the release of his third album, Champs magnétiques (which followed the success of Oxygène and Equinoxe), Jean-Michel Jarre managed to bag a hard-earned Chinese tour. It was the first time a Western artist had toured China under the communist regime, five years after Mao’s death. He would perform five shows at the end of October at the Beijing Sports Palace and the Shanghai Stadium alongside keyboardist Dominique Perrier and drummer Roger Rizzitelli. They were also joined by sound engineer Frédérick Rousseau, which gave the tour a slightly rocky edge. The band played hits like ‘Equinoxe, Pt. 4’ and ‘Chants magnétiques, Pt. 2’ for their curious Chinese audience, but they also included songs composed for the occasion such as ‘Orient Express’, ‘Nuit à Shanghai’, ‘Jonques de pêcheurs au crépuscule’ and ‘Souvenir de Chine’. The latter closes this stunning double album, newly remastered to celebrate the 40th anniversary of this historic tour. And who can forget the laser harp? A science-fictional instrument created by Bernard Szajner and played for the first time in China. Jarre described this tour as ‘an encounter of the third kind’. It was, without doubt, an encounter that won over the audience, whose vigorous applause can be heard on this historic recording. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

‘Virtual reality applied to sound’ is the theme for the insatiable Jean-Michel Jarre’s 22nd album with Sony. Conceived in 3D spatialised audio, the record conjures up some extraordinary sensations, with sounds coming from every direction. Credits are shared with Pierre Henry, the French pioneer of musique concrète, known for his avant-garde hit ‘Psyché Rock’. Both Henry and Jarre have history with Pierre Schaeffer, the founder of GRM (Groupe de recherches musicales de l’ORTF), where the first French electronic music experiments took place. Pierre Henry was never part of the GRM, carrying out his experiments in parallel, but he was still very close to Schaeffer in the 50s.Jarre worked an internship at GRM during the late 60s, where he idolised Shaeffer. A collaboration between Jarre and Henry had been suggested in 2015 for the album Electronica, but Pierre Henry’s faltering health and subsequent death in 2017 meant that the project never came to fruition. Nevertheless, Henry left a series of sounds to Jean-Michel Jarre, which he used to create Oxymore - a tribute to the late composer, whose signature sound becomes apparent right from the first track. This is a pretty catchy record, Jarre clearly deciding to make the most of the kick pedal on ‘ZEITGEIST’ and ‘BRUTALISM’. The influence of musique concrète is plainly evident, with lots of Pierre Henry-esque noises swirling through the tracks. The fusion of these two electronic pioneers is enjoyable (though inevitably unbalanced), with excellent highlights such as the meta-disco ‘SONIC LAND’ and the trippy ‘SYNTHY SISTERS’: tracks where Jarre sounds like he’s having more fun than ever before. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
