Ararat (France-Arménie, un dialogue musical)

Canticum Novum

Classical - Released June 30, 2017 | Ambronay Éditions

Booklet
This album mixes Armenian popular and religious songs from the early days of Christianity (let’s not forget that Armenia was the very first country to adopt the Christian religion as state religion in the year 301) to our modern times, in which the numerous massacres, that started at the end of the 19th century and progressively led to the 1915 genocide, are lamented in music. Here is a broad overview with Mount Ararat as a backdrop, Armenians’ symbolic national mountain even though, irony of modern geopolitics, it is now in Turkey… In this music, we find numerous Caucasian influences and a wonderful mix that absorbs Christianity, Islam, Zoroastrianism, the European Middle Ages, Greek Antiquity, in short, this region was and remains an incredible melting pot. The ensemble involves a mix of Caucasian folkloric music: a kamancheh, a duduk (sort of oboe), a qanun – the Oriental equivalent to a table zither –, an oud, various percussions; and medieval and popular Western instruments. A beautiful music at the confluence of folkloric and art music, that comes from far away… © SM/Qobuz

The Seasons

Prisma

Classical - Released November 16, 2018 | Ambronay Éditions

Hi-Res Booklet
The mixed consort Prisma has chosen the four winds of Greek mythology -- Zefiro, Boreas, Notos, and Euros -- and the four seasons as the organizing themes of this 2018 release on Ambronay, offering a delightful program of 17th century chamber sonatas by Francesco Turini, Dario Castello, Marco Uccellini, and Giovanni Battista Fontana, along with shorter pieces from the Renaissance and early Baroque periods. To a degree, this is a somewhat fanciful use of a well-worn trope, because the pieces have been chosen to reflect the seasonal moods the group wishes to convey, rather than the specific intentions of the composers; to be sure, this is not comparable to Vivaldi's Four Seasons, which was written with the seasons in mind. Even so, the variety of forms, including the popular Canario and Ciaconna, and the virtuosity of Prisma -- Elisabeth Champollion on recorder, Dávid Budai on viola da gamba, Franciska Anna Hajdu on violin, and Alon Sariel on lute -- give the music the needed spontaneity and liveliness to suggest the changeability of weather or the passing of the seasons. Also included are colorful arrangements by the members of the group, each contributing imaginative variations that reflect the improvisational practices of the Baroque. Sample the Prelude that opens the section Notos - Summer, where the playful evocation of a buzzing insect paints a vivid picture. Ambronay's sound is quite close-up and intimate, so every nuance and detail is clearly audible. Highly recommended. © TiVo

Judas Maccabaeus

Leonardo García Alarcón

Sacred Oratorios - Released March 23, 2010 | Ambronay

Hi-Res Booklet
For English-speaking audiences who don't mind their Handel sung by sometimes heavily accented non-native speakers, this version of Judas Maccabaeus is hard to beat. Argentinean conductor Leonardo García Alarcón leads the exemplary ensembles Choeur de Chambre de Namur and Les Agrémens in an exceptionally spirited account of the score that effectively erases any taint of its reputation as starchy favorite of amateur Victorian choral societies. His rhythms are crisp and his tempos impetuous, as is appropriate for the martial subject matter, but his phrasing is also gorgeously shapely and the lyrical numbers are rendered with sumptuous sensuality and flexibility. The brilliance of the performance is amplified by the very resonant and richly ample sound quality, which allows the voices, both choral and solos, to be heard to their best advantage, bright yet warm, with a ringing, exhilarating clarity. The soloists are absolutely first-rate. As Simon, Argentinean baritone Alejandro Meerapfel has the most pronounced accent, but the suppleness and discipline of his singing, as well as his expertise in the conventions of Baroque style, are an incentive to overlook his oddly placed vowels. Accent is somewhat less an issue with Japanese tenor Makoto Sakurada, whose gleaming, nuanced, heroic voice is a marvel in the title role. Argentinean singers soprano Maria Soledad de la Rosa and mezzo-soprano Mariana Rewerski have glorious, soaring voices that are beautifully matched, and their transporting duets are among the high points of the performance. These are all artists to watch out for. The live recording picks up some ancillary noises, particularly surprisingly loud page turns, but that seems like a minor quibble given the quality of the otherwise extraordinarily engaging performance. Highly recommended.© TiVo
