These are on-stage live recordings of various great Wagnerian moments of the great Swedish dramatic soprano Nina Stemme (born in 1963) made between 2003 and 2013, right during the opera singer’s time of glory, at the prime of her ability – it’s worth pointing out that a dramatic soprano’s voice, as opposed to a “classic” lyric soprano, reaches her full prime rather late in her musical life, considering the extravagant muscular stress required for the roles of Isolde, Sieglinde or Brünnhilde. The orchestra of the Vienna State Opera is conducted by either Seiji Ozawa or Franz Welser-Möst – at the time when they succeeded each other as Music Director of this honourable and particularly traditionalist institution. And let’s not forget that Nina Stemme won the Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Prize in 1993, and gained international recognition as Isolde at Glyndebourne in 2003, the year of the first recordings presented here. Since then, she has played all the legendary female icons such as Elektra, Turandot, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, and many other major roles in Bayreuth. The recordings here by Martha Mödl from 1955 document not only her impeccable rendering of the German, but also her singular singing status. She started out as a mezzo-soprano, but in 1949, with her first Kundry, she switched to the vocal range midway between mezzo and dramatic soprano, and in March 1952 she sang her first Brünnhilde. She was there from the very start in Neubayreuth: From 1951 to 1955, Mödl sang Kundry in all of the Parsifal performances and only began alternating with Astrid Varnay from 1956. She was also cast in the Ring from 1951, first as Gutrune and the Third Norn, and from 1953 also as Brünnhilde and in 1954 as Sieglinde as well. There, too, she alternated with Varnay, who had been performing almost without pause as Brünnhilde since 1951. Mödl sang Isolde in 1952 and 1953. To the director Wieland Wagner she was a “high dramatic soprano free of pathos”. He valued the way her “voice, personality and performance formed an absolutely inseparable whole”. Her stage presence can no longer be experienced through the recordings, but the vocal penetration of the roles can be. © Profil

The first volume in a series devoted to Bach's famous Cantatas with Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir. The project is chronologically structured, so this first volume includes Cantatas composed at Mulhausen in the years 1707 and 1708. It contains four great and well-known masterpieces which convey the mastery and maturity of the young Bach, aged 22 at that time. Bach's sacred music written before he went to Leipzig, including all the works from the Weimar period, are often lumped together as "early" cantatas. This is misleading and ultimately inaccurate, since Bach was already 38 years old when he moved from his post as Kapellmeister at Kothen in 1723 to take up his duties as Kantor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. In fact most of Bach's church cantatas date from the Leipzig years, as does the consolidation of the stylistic, structural and technical features of his vocal works, but even the repertoire composed before 1714 can hardly be termed "early". The works composed at Mühlhausen, demonstrating a striking sureness of touch in their conception, placed the 22-year-old among the finest contemporary cantata composers. Bach's earliest church cantatas are still clearly marked by 17th-century traditions. As well as the influences of older members of the Bach family, those of Buxtehude and Pachelbel the Elder, and Italian and French masters are evident, technically, structurally and stylistically. A particularly characteristic feature of the pre-Leipzig cantatas is Bach's exceptional delight in experimental and complex handling of an extremely wide range of instruments, with refined sound effects (such as the use of the bassoon) and poly- and homophonic settings and forms. © Challenge Records

The penultimate music drama in Der Ring des Nibelungen, Siegfried is also the next-to-last release in Marek Janowski’s series of Richard Wagner’s mature operas for PentaTone. Continuing the Ring with the same high standards of musicianship and production exhibited earlier in Das Rheingold and Die Walküre, Janowski delivers an exciting and highly detailed account in this live unstaged performance with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. Stephen Gould gives a commanding performance as the hero Siegfried, and his strong singing is reminiscent at times of the great heldentenors in this role. Joined by Christian Elsner as Mime, Violeta Urmana as Brünnhilde, Tomasz Konieczny as the Wanderer, and Matti Salminen as Fafner, the cast is solid and cohesive, and their parts are clearly audible, thanks to careful microphone placement. But the real star of this and Janowski’s other Wagner recordings is the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, whose amazing clarity make this a Siegfried for admirers of Wagner’s brilliant orchestral writing. Audiophiles will be thoroughly impressed with the fidelity of the sound on these hybrid multichannel SACDs, and while this rendition has serious competition from the great performances of the past, it’s unbeatable for its close-up presence, vibrant colors, and wide dynamic range. PentaTone's 2013 release of Richard Wagner's Götterdämmerung concludes Marek Janowski's extraordinary concert recordings of the ten mature operas, and with it, this audiophile series ends on a high note. As in the previous sets, the playing of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra is exemplary, and Janowski lets the musicians shine even brighter in this final Ring opera. Some Wagner enthusiasts will listen to this SACD presentation mainly for the wonderful richness and sonic depth of the orchestra, and they'd be well within their rights, because the ensemble's sound and the multichannel recording are superb in every measure. But the singing shouldn't be overlooked. Despite a number of critics who have lamented the unevenness of the casts in this series, the vocals in Götterdämmerung are generally quite strong, with outstanding performances from Petra Lang as Brünnhilde and Matti Salminen as Hagen. The only disappointment is an underwhelming Siegfried, sung variably by Lance Ryan. Still, considering that this recording was assembled from the best parts of ten performances, the production is quite even throughout, and it has the clean details, transparent acoustics, and consistent levels of a studio recording, always a plus in a live Wagner recording.© TiVo
