I NEVER LIKED YOU

Future

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released April 29, 2022 | Epic - Freebandz

Hi-Res
Considered by many to be the greatest rapper of his time and one of the most influential musicians of the last fifteen years, Future’s ninth album proves that his music is still representative of global sound. Produced under the guidance of beatmaker ATL Jacob, I Never Liked You is a stunning trap blockbuster. It underpins all the sentiments the Atlanta rapper has explored throughout his career. From the exaggerated melancholy of Puffin on Zootiez to the subtle off beat flow of Gold Stacks and Holy Ghost, Future’s nonchalance gives rise to an incredible capacity for melody (by finding balance between his voice and his productions). This is aptly demonstrated on Love You Better (an ode to his mother), or Massaging me, whose synthetic accents take us right back to the Southern rap of the late 2000s. Of course, such a release was bound to attract other giants of the genre, such as Kanye West, Drake (who actually appears twice on the album), Gunna and Kodak Black. Only a select few can sit at Future’s table.  © Brice Miclet/Qobuz

The Essential Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson

Soul - Released July 18, 2005 | Epic - Legacy

Hi-Res
There are several Michael Jackson greatest-hits compilations out there, each one its own take on what should be the definitive portrait of the gloved one's career. The Ultimate Collection, The Essential Collection (different from the one here), and Number Ones have all surfaced in 2003 and 2004, and HIStory a few years prior. Each one of these collections, while commendable in its attempt to thoroughly document Jackson's accomplishments, has fallen woefully short in one aspect or another. This has finally been rectified with this installment of Sony's outstanding Essential collection. Starting with his campaign with his brothers in the Jackson 5, this two-disc set tours through every important single and every important fan favorite short of including his duet with Paul McCartney on "Say Say Say" (the Beatle does, however, make an appearance here on "The Girl Is Mine"). From Off the Wall to Dangerous, it's all here in one concise package, making it the ideal reference point from which exploration into his deeper catalog can begin. While die-hard fans will already have every single song contained herein and may be weary to purchase another greatest-hits compilation short of a greatest-hits compilation including his backing vocals on Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me," this may be the only one fans and casual listeners will ever have to purchase to get their fill of the King of Pop's magic.© Rob Theakston /TiVo

Metal Health

Quiet Riot

Pop - Released March 11, 1983 | Pasha Records

Hi-Res
Quiet Riot seemingly came out of nowhere in 1983, racing up the singles charts with their over-the-top cover of Slade's "Cum On Feel the Noize" and crashing the Billboard album chart's number one spot with their multi-million-selling Metal Health LP -- the first heavy metal record to ever do so. Prior to their "overnight success," QR had been toiling in relative obscurity for years, so that by the time they finally turned the corner, Metal Health's meteoric success must have surprised the band even more than it did their critics and newfound fans. Though it has received its fair share of criticism, Metal Health isn't nearly as average as some would have you believe. Say what you will, but the album's title track continues to deliver after all these years. With its crushing guitar riff, inane lyrics, and goofy bravado, it's heavy metal personified in all its glorious, ridiculous excess. The surprisingly laid-back groove of "Don't Wanna Let You Go" follows the storming "Cum On Feel the Noize," which leads into the slightly '50s-ish "Slick Black Cadillac," a rehashed early band favorite. "Love's a Bitch" closes side one with plenty of venom and attitude, but despite a valiant attempt by the driving coulda-been-a-hit "Breathless," side two falls way short of the mark. Even though "Run for Cover" is quite a stomper, the closing triplet of "Battle Axe" (Carlos Cavazo's half-assed guitar showcase), "Let's Get Crazy" (downright embarrassing jock rock), and "Thunderbird" (painful sub-Journey balladry) tend to understate the hugeness of the occasion. Still unquestionably the band's best effort, Metal Health would eventually earn one-hit wonder status thanks to Quiet Riot's inability to deliver anything resembling a decent follow-up.© Eduardo Rivadavia & John Franck /TiVo

Beautiful Thugger Girls

Young Thug

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released June 16, 2017 | Atlantic Records

Always intending to surprise, clash and never to stagnate, Jeffrey Lamar Williams a.k.a. Young Thug throws us off balance once again with Beautiful Thugger Girls. During the summer of 2016, the charismatic rapper from Atlanta had once again stepped on the gas in terms of eclecticism with Jeffery (on the cover, he wore a dress designed by Italian fashion designer Alessandro Trincone!). Following I’m Up and Slime Season 3, he released a mixtape packed with guests, such as Gucci Mane, Young Scooter, Travis Scott, Quavo or even Fugees’ Wyclef Jean, to whom he paid tribute from the very first song. The out-of-this-world rapper also played around imitating Future (Future Swag) and laid down an extremely heterogeneous programme… This time, Young Thug releases a kind of R&B album, sometimes flirting with pop: an album of melancholic rhythms in which he’s rather a singer than a rapper. Produced by Drake, Beautiful Thugger Girls among others features Future, Snoop Dogg, Lil Durk, Millie Go Lightly, Jacquees, Travis Scott and Gunna, and shows that Young Thug is aiming high (he doesn’t stand 1m91 for nothing…) and is very very hungry, as can be seen from the hit song potential of some of his songs, which will reach a public usually sealed off from his die-hard rap. At 25 years old, the Southern MC is just getting started… © MD/Qobuz
