Vivaldi: Stabat Mater

Jakub Józef Orliński

Classical - Released March 18, 2022 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
In this new interpretation of Vivaldi’s famous Stabat Mater, hedonism gives way to a pain and suffering that’s uncommon in compositions by this red-headed priest. Accompanied by the Capella Cracoviensis and meticulously directed by Jan Tomasz Adamus, the Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński offers a fresh take on this music. This is mainly owed to his skilful ornamentation that enriches Vivaldi’s long, yet rather simple vocal lines. This score by Vivaldi was only discovered in 1939, and this highly expressive performance gives the piece a haunting tone and a profoundly melancholic dimension.Le Stabat Mater is Vivaldi’s oldest known vocal masterpiece, dating back to approximately 1711. At this time, the composer was in Brescia helping his father, a violinist. A short time after, he would assume his post in Ospedale della Pietà in Venice (a hospice and music conservatory for orphans). Vivaldi spent 40 years there as a violin teacher, principal composer and choirmaster. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Vivaldi, A.: Stabat Mater / Pergolesi, G.B.: Salve Regina / Bach, J.S.: Tilge, Hochster, Meine Sunden

Daniel Taylor

Classical - Released July 1, 2009 | BIS

Hi-Res Booklet
Young Canadian countertenor Daniel Taylor combines a deliciously creamy voice with a keen dramatic sense, and his reputation in this small but nevertheless star-oriented field has been steadily growing. This beautifully recorded release from Sweden's BIS label seems certain to add to that reputation. Veteran British early music soprano Emma Kirkby gets top billing, but she appears only in the final work on the album, Bach's Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden, BWV 1083, a transcription and fairly detailed revision of Giovanni Batista Pergolesi's somber Stabat Mater. This work might be worth the purchase price by itself; it's less often heard than Bach's more faithful Vivaldi transcriptions, and the process of remaking the Stabat Mater into a German cantata is interesting before one even gets to the marvelous interplay between Kirkby's now sharp-edged voice and Taylor's supple instrument. Pergolesi himself is represented by the Salve Regina, which offers several fine examples of Taylor's flair for catching hearers' attention with his text readings. Sample his way of entering with a striking vibrato-free tone in texts of supplication, and then broadening out into a warmer sound as the prayer gains strength. The opening Stabat Mater, RV 621, of Vivaldi, preceded by a short instrumental sonata, is a marvelous example of the dark but lush colors associated with this text in the Baroque, and Taylor's performances, not overwhelmingly powerful but operatic in their beauty, hang in the mind. Taylor's period-instrument Theatre of Early Music backs him quietly, with perfect sensitivity. A compelling program, in top-notch renderings. Booklet notes are in English, French, and German.© TiVo

Pergolesi: Stabat Mater - A Tribute To Pergolesi

Anna Netrebko

Classical - Released March 18, 2011 | Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

Distinctions Gramophone Editor's Choice
Baroque music is not the usual province of soprano Anna Netrebko, or contralto Marianna Pizzolato, or conductor Antonio Pappano, or the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Roma, so the listener might approach this tribute to the 300th anniversary of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi with some skepticism, but the performers do a terrific job. The orchestra uses modern instruments, so this is never going to be mistaken for a recording by Baroque specialists, but everyone involved approaches the challenge with such sensitivity and such evident excitement that listeners who don't demand absolute adherence to cutting-edge developments in early music practice are likely to be swept up. Netrebko is in fine voice, but some of the music lies low for her, and there are few opportunities for high-flying virtuosic vocal display, so this album is probably not the best introduction to her gifts. The intensely focused and deeply felt characterizations for which she is known are here, though, and serve the music well. Contralto Marianna Pizzolato actually makes a stronger impression because the music is beautifully situated for her warm, earthy, passionately expressive voice. Netrebko and Pizzolato sound fabulous together; in their duets in the Stabat mater each maintains the distinctiveness of her personality but their blend is gorgeous and conveys the depth of their connection in witnessing and describing a profound tragedy. The live recording was made at the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus (which was originally a railroad station), a hall large enough to seat 2,500 people. Its spacious resonance is for the most part conducive to the music, but at the end of some movements, the penultimate chord is still hanging around when the final chord is sounded, to dissonant effect.© TiVo
