Verdi : La Traviata

Marina Rebeka

Opera - Released November 1, 2019 | Prima Classic

Hi-Res Booklet
As if trying to prove that opera's centre of gravity has changed, this new Traviata is from Latvia. Recorded in Riga between 24 March and 3 April 2019, it's the first studio recording of a Verdi opera for... 26 years. This production shows off today's great voices, with a moving Violetta from Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka, who has been singing this role very successfully on the great stages of the world since 2007 and meeting with great acclaim (she has already featured in a Naxos DVD of a live performance of La Traviata in Hanover). At her side, Alfredo is played by Charles Castronovo, one of the world's most sought-after lyrical tenors. He sang this role (also for a DVD recording) alongside Natalie Dessay at Aix-en-Provence. As for the Verdian baritone George Petean, he is also seen at Vienna, and at Covent Garden, the Metropolitan, Dresden and Zurich. At the stand, the young German lyrical orchestra conductor Michael Balke is on the up and up. After having led the Magdeburg Opera, he is currently the musical director at St. Gallen, in German- speaking Switzerland. And today he is gradually becoming more and more in- demand on the Tokyo stage and on stages across Europe. For musicians, making a record often means running a gauntlet. Following her international success, Marina Rebeka, like a great many artists today, turned the tables by creating Prima Classic, her own independent label, keeping her intellectual property rights and artistic independence over her work: all in order to enjoy total freedom in her own artistic choices. This Traviata is very polished both vocally and instrumentally, and it's one of the first outings for the new label. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Voyage intime

Sandrine Piau

Classical - Released February 3, 2023 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
No one can accuse soprano Sandrine Piau of ever resting on her laurels, and with this 2023 release, she began, in her late fifties, a new partnership with accompanist David Kadouch. It is a bit hard to tell what the theme is supposed to be all about. Only some of the songs are "intimes," and many are not about voyages; Piau also notes that some of the songs are about "the theme of people being snatched away from the land of the living," not an especially intimate concept. Best just to listen and take the songs one by one, and this will reveal not only strong performances but organizational principles the performers don't mention. The first part of the program is devoted to German lieder, the second to French mélodies (before a final return to Schubert), with one piano piece in each set. Piau is arguably the greatest French interpreter of German song, and her Schubert Erlkönig, D. 328, has nothing trite about it as she inhabits but doesn't make opera characters out of the three characters in the piece. Another "theme" is that Piau really makes songs by women her own. There is a group by Clara Schumann, with an excellent setting of Heine's Lorelei that owes something to Erlkönig but is in no way a knockoff, and a fine group by Lili Boulanger that fits Piau beautifully. Sample Si tout ceci n'est qu'un pauvre rêve. Perhaps the Mignon songs do not fit her quite so well at this late date, but the heftier numbers by Liszt and Wolf more than make up for this. Yet another theme is that these are all songs that give the pianist a great deal to do, and Piau's interactions with Kadouch are sensitive and detailed enough to make one eagerly anticipate future collaborations. Superbly recorded by Alpha at the Teldex Studio in Berlin, the album made classical best-seller charts in early 2023.© James Manheim /TiVo

Mireille Mathieu chante Piaf

Mireille Mathieu

French Music - Released January 1, 1994 | Sony Music Entertainment

Booklet

The most revered French vocalist of the 20th century, Edith Piaf continues to influence French artists long after her death. A soulful, moving singer with an impressive range, Mireille Mathieu pays tribute to Piaf's legacy on the superb Chante Piaf. As great as Piaf's influence is on her, the singer projects an impressive identity of her own on familiar songs ranging from the dramatic "Exodus" and the haunting "Jezebel" to the confident "Non, Je Ne Regrete Rien." Quite appropriately, this fine CD opens with Piaf's signature song, "La Vie en Rose." Atlantic could have easily come up with a Piaf clone, but instead, the company wisely chose a vocalist who salutes the legend on her own terms.© Alex Henderson /TiVo

Chez Toots

Toots Thielemans

Jazz - Released April 20, 1998 | Private Music

On this unusual CD, the remarkable harmonica player Toots Thielemans explores a variety of mostly French melodies. The music is often nostalgic and wistful but generally swinging, with enough different tempos to hold one's interest throughout. The oddest aspect of the set is that there is an overdubbed vocal apiece by Diana Krall ("La Vie en Rose"), Dianne Reeves, Johnny Mathis, Shirley Horn, and a promising newcomer known here only as Chip; Krall, Reeves, and Chip sing in French. Thielemans plays beautifully throughout the relaxed date, which includes "I Wish You Love," "The Windmills of Your Mind," "Once Upon a Summertime," and "Moulin Rouge." Easily recommended.© Scott Yanow /TiVo

Verdi: La Traviata

Dame Joan Sutherland

Classical - Released January 1, 1980 | Decca Music Group Ltd.

Joan Sutherland was in her early fifties when she made this 1976 recording of La traviata, so her voice has a maturity that isn't ideal for Violetta. Her technique and her distinctive brightness are still fully evident, though, and her performance is sometimes vocally dazzling. Luciano Pavarotti was close to his prime at the time of the recording, and he sings with his characteristic breadth, vigor, and intensity. Matteo Manuguerra is a sturdy Germont. Richard Bonynge leads the National Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Opera Chorus in a spirited, traditional take on the score, one of the relatively few recordings of the opera that is absolutely complete. The sound is superb and clear, clean, and present.© TiVo

Eternelle

French Music - Released July 22, 1991 | Parlophone (France)

EMI's U.K. collection of Edith Piaf, titled Éternelle, is quite a nice set that includes many of Piaf's numerous hits, such as "La Vie en Rose" and "La Goualante du Pauvre Jean." Overall, Éternelle is comparable to the U.S. mainstay on Capitol Records, The Voice of the Sparrow: The Very Best of Edith Piaf, but with only seven of the 18 songs overlapping.© Gregory McIntosh /TiVo
