Saint-Saëns: Ascanio - Ballet - Andromaque - Les Barbares - La Princesse jaune

Malmö Symphony Orchestra

Classical - Released November 22, 2019 | Naxos

Hi-Res Booklet
The Malmö Symphony Orchestra and its conductor Jun Markl uphold a repertoire which is rarely heard live, specifically French music from the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. After Albéric Magnard (BIS in 1999 and 2000) and Vincent d’Indy (Naxos, 2019), they have published a Camille Saint-Saëns album (once again for Naxos). An untiring globe-trotter, Saint-Saëns peppers his music with effects which create a background of different sounds. As opposed to Louise by Gustave Charpentier or Pelléas by Debussy, Les Barbares by Saint-Saëns (conceived in 1901) is a new example of the purest tradition of of French lyricism. The harmonic richness of the score, its bountiful melodies and the opulence of its orchestration do not break any new ground. Indeed, it seems Saint-Saëns is more inventive when composing within a more classic framework. However, despite the anachronistic nature of this work, which is also identified in Ascanio, La princesse jaune, Jota aragonese, Andromaque and Ouverture d’un opéra-comique inachevé, the listener savours every note. The programme, which combines the orchestral pages of these scores (ballet, opera and other lyrical tragedy), allows the Malmö Symphony Orchestra to show the full range of their musical colour: sumptuous strings, soaring harps and an irresistible harmony make them sound like one lone supermusician. Indeed, Jun Markl sculpts the MSO with uniformity in mind - the sound recording sticks to this approach as well - highlighting the the powerful lyrical dimension of this repertoire. An inspiring and necessary account of the genius of French orchestration. © Elsa Siffert/Qobuz

Albéric Magnard: Orchestral Works

Fabrice Bollon

Classical - Released April 24, 2020 | Naxos

Hi-Res Booklet
Recorded in concert between 2017 and 2019, this third album by Fabrice Bollon, at the head of the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra (in Germany), where he has been the Musical Director since 2008, finishes what is the first complete recording of Albéric Magnard’s orchestral works under a single conductor. Michel Plasson, Jean-Yves Ossonce and Thomas Sanderling are among other conductors who have devoted themselves to the four symphonies by the French composer who died heroically at the beginning of the Great War in September 1914. The final volume of this complete set contains already-known pieces from Magnard’s maturity such as his Hymne à la justice, a musical counterpart to Zola’s famous article J’accuse that defended Captain Dreyfus. Performed at the Libération de Paris under the direction of Manuel Rosenthal, it remains one of the rare works by Magnard still in the repertoire. The Chant funèbre, dedicated to the memory of his father, is considered one of his masterpieces, while the Hymne à Vénus celebrates his wife and the feminine ideal in general. The Ouverture, Op. 10 suffers from its lack of title, despite being an incredibly strong piece with truly masterful writing. The Suite dans le style ancien dates from the beginning of Magnard’s years studying with Vincent d’Indy and is part of a sort of neoclassicism that was flourishing at the time. A pupil’s work in which one can already perceive the originality of a composer scandalously forgotten by conductors and concert organisers. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Messiaen: Éclairs sur l'au-delà... (Édition StudioMasters)

Sir Simon Rattle

Classical - Released October 5, 2004 | Warner Classics International

Hi-Res Booklet
If any conductor can be trusted to bring out the shimmering colors, textural depths, and profound majesty of Olivier Messiaen's late masterpiece Éclairs sur l'au-delà..., then confidence in Sir Simon Rattle certainly is well-placed. Approaching this massive work with acute precision in its smallest parts, yet ever mindful of the music's cosmic dimensions, Rattle leads the expanded Berlin Philharmonic in an exacting yet sweeping performance. The consistency of the large ensemble is remarkable, particularly in the processional of wind choirs in "Apparition du Christ glorieux," in the elaborate counterpoint of birdsongs in "Plusieurs Oiseaux des arbres de Vie," and in the sublime string textures of "Demeurer dans l'amour" and "Le Christ, lumière du Paradis." Yet there are many delicate details that demonstrate Rattle's meticulousness and sensitivity to color, especially in the ringing changes of "La constellation du Sagittaire" and the quicksilver exchanges of "L'Oiseaux-lyre et la Ville-fiancée." Only the recorded sound is less than ideal, perhaps too spacious and resonant for Messiaen's most complicated passages to be heard clearly. Even so, this challenging work has had few great performances, and Rattle's excellent rendition is only surpassed by Myung-Whun Chung's brilliant reading with the Orchestre de l'Opéra Bastille on Deutsche Grammophon, which also offers superior sound.© TiVo

Marshall Allen presents Sun Ra And His Arkestra: In The Orbit Of Ra

Sun Ra

Free Jazz & Avant-Garde - Released September 22, 2014 | Strut

Distinctions Sélection JAZZ NEWS - Pitchfork: Best New Reissue
As the longest-tenured member of the Arkestra (55-plus years and counting as of 2014), there is no one with a deeper understanding of the music of Sun Ra than Marshall Allen, and that's part of what makes In the Orbit of Ra such a special collection. The Arkestra's long history is often divided into musical/geographic periods or spoken of as a progression from inside to outside playing. This set spans from the late '50s to the late '70s but the non-chronological sequencing shows how artificial those stylistic boundaries are. The tracks chosen show how many of the elements of their more outside material were present even back in the late '50s and there was quite clearly a strong, coherent musical vision in place from the beginning (but most audiences probably weren't ready for it yet). There are a few signature tunes here, but this isn't really a greatest-hits collection. Instead, it's a guided tour from Marshall Allen deep into Sun Ra's music. Each track leads the listener a bit further so by the time Art Jenkins' space voice enters at the end of disc one, it makes perfect sense instead of just being "weird" in a different context. "Solar Differentials" is the perfect setup for the second disc (starting with the hypnotic "Astro Black," replete with industrial drill sounds), which continues the journey with more of a focus on vocal pieces over the years, ultimately leading us back full circle to the beginning in Chicago. In addition to the unreleased tracks "Reflects Motion, Pt. 1" and "Trying to Put the Blame on Me" (a wonderful solo piano piece), there's an unedited "Islands in the Sun" and a bunch of great photos by Val Wilmer. Then there's the remastering: this is easily the best sound most of these tracks have ever had before, on CD or LP. There are any number of great performances here, but Ronnie Boykins' work on bass really stands out with the new remastering. Despite the fact that most of this material was already available, In the Orbit of Ra is close to essential for fans and a pretty good place to start for the curious Sun Ra novice. He really was writing music for the 21st century. © Sean Westergaard /TiVo

Cantatas of the Bach Family

Benjamin Appl

Classical - Released June 19, 2020 | haenssler CLASSIC

Hi-Res Booklet
Albums pairing music by Johann Sebastian Bach with that of his sons come along every so often, but one like this, examining a single genre, is not so common despite its obvious potential. The execution is not flawless, but the music on this album is rare, interesting, and well performed. Listeners actually get only two cantatas by the Bach sons, and the program closes with the 1747 version of the Cantata No. 82, "Ich habe genug," BWV 82, beautifully sung by Benjamin Appl but doesn't add much to the program. There are also a pair of symphonies by (probably) Carl Philipp Emanuel and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, the latter more experimental in its wild voice-leading than the usually unorthodox C.P.E. The two actual cantatas by Bach's sons are quite intriguing. Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach's Pygmalion is a secular work for bass and ensemble, a semi-dramatic piece with lots of recitative. The intriguing thing is that Johann Christoph Friedrich seems to do anything to avoid following his father's example: there is a bit of Vivaldi here, Handel there, as well as more modern influences like Gluck. The opening sacred cantata, C.P.E. Bach's Ich bin vergnügt mit meinem Stande, Wq deest (the work gets its world premiere here, and no doubts are raised about its authorship), is again closer to J.S. Bach's example. There's plenty more to hear, and Reinhard Goebel, leading the Berliner Barock Solisten, expands upon the finer points in his notes. This may be of most interest to devotees of the Bachs, but it's listenable for anyone. © TiVo
