Le Concert des Oiseaux. Vincent Bouchot: Le Carnaval des animaux en péril

La Rêveuse

Classical - Released February 10, 2023 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet
Several famous pieces of music based on birdsong appeared in the 19th and 20th centuries; those by Saint-Saëns, Britten, and Ravel are here, although Messiaen is not. However, the affinity between music and birdsong had been explored for centuries before that, and the early music group La Rêveuse here provides some delightful examples. The always pictorial François Couperin is represented, as is Rameau, but other composers are less familiar but no less charming. Sample the works by Theodor Schwartzkopff, Michel Blavet, and especially Michel Pignolet de Montéclair (1667-1737), whose "Les Ramages" ("The Songs") names a group of birds and then illustrates their songs. Then there are historical-instrument versions of Saint-Saëns, Britten, and Ravel. One may accept this idea or not, but even in the latter case, they don't do much to dent the charm of the whole. The program ends with a work by contemporary composer Vincent Bouchot, Le Carnaval des animaux en péril, a kind of a take-off on Saint-Saëns for the Anthropocene era that also calls forth a striking variety of instruments from La Rêveuse. Another questionable idea is that, in keeping with the practices of this group, recorded birdsong is heard between some of the tracks. Whatever aspects of this release might be doubtful, it rarely fails to bring a smile. © James Manheim /TiVo

Oh, ma belle brunette

A Nocte Temporis - Reinoud Van Mechelen

Classical - Released May 27, 2022 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
The term "brunette" refers not only to a young woman with brown hair, but also to a musical form that was highly fashionable from the late seventeenth century to the early eighteenth. The genre evolved from the air de cour, extremely popular in France since the beginning of the seventeenth century. The compositional process, however, remained very similar: to write a short, tender song, dealing with themes of love or nature, which could be sung alone or accompanied by a harmonic instrument. The late seventeenth century also saw the appearance of an instrument that soon became a favourite of composers and amateur musicians: the German flute, now called the traverso or Baroque flute. In this new programme, tenor Reinoud van Mechelen, flautist Anna Besson and A nocte temporis present an anthology of airs and brunettes ranging from the most touching song to the heartiest drinking song (air à boire). © Alpha Classics

Mompou plays Mompou - Vol. 1 (Musica Callada)

Federico Mompou

Classical - Released January 1, 1974 | Ensayo

Distinctions Choc du Monde de la Musique - Recommandé par Classica

Federico Mompou outlived most of his generation, yet his work remained obscure and did not receive much attention until after his death in 1987. Mompou's rarefied music remained true to its origins in Catalan song and the French styles he adopted in his youth -- alternating between lyrical simplicity and impressionistic wonderment. Many of the pieces in Música callada (1959-1967) bear similarities to Satie, but the greater influence of Debussy is apparent in the music, which is often spiced with added-note harmonies and polychords of ambiguous tonality. While the Primer cuaderno is thoroughly modal and placid, the Segundo cuaderno offers more chromatic possibilities, and Mompou indulges in some unsettling, dense passages reminiscent of late Scriabin. The Tercer cuaderno and the Cuarto cuaderno are both quieter, mingling brief, song-like phrases with widely spaced pitches that are allowed to ring in sonorous haloes. Mompou's own performance of this work is controlled yet passionate, within the narrow bounds he set out in the music. The volume rarely rises to fortissimo, but even at the softest dynamics, Mompou plays in an intense reverie that is compelling. The sound of this disc is clear and full, and only a minimal amount of tape hiss is audible in the softest passages. © TiVo

Si vous vouliez un jour… Airs sérieux et à boire, Vol. 2

William Christie

Mélodies (French) - Released January 11, 2019 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason
As the first of a series of publications that aim to celebrate forty years of the "Arts Flo" founded by William Christie in 1979, this new album, recorded at the Philharmonie de Paris in 2016, is made up of "serious songs and “drinking songs" from France in the 17th century. Following the filming of Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea, performed at the Salzburg Festival 2018, and the ambitious complete recording of Carlo Gesualdo’s Madrigaux conducted by Paul Agnew, who is little by little taking over as the ensemble’s conductor, new editions are returning towards harmonia mundi, the "historic" publisher of the Arts Florissants and their founder. This recording is a perfect “Map of Tendre” of the loved-up 17th century, with its lovelorn shepherds, pretty shepherdesses (jolies bergères, in fact!) who aren't always too chaste, and helpful birds. Having only just moved on from Renaissance polyphony, French composers, very much influenced by their Italian colleagues, produced airs de cour (courtly airs) which would become the first constitutive elements of French opera. This album brings together the composers who best represent this musical trend. It gives us Marc-Antoine Charpentier as well as Michel Lambert, who wrote serious melodies, and Sébastien Le Camus, who would quickly become one of the musical favourites of the Parisian salon scene. These men dominated the musical productions which then circulated in either printed or manuscript form, or in periodicals such as Le Mercure galant. What a happy time it was for France, when love, sincere love, always won out over adversity and jealousy. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Bien que l'amour… Airs sérieux et à boire

William Christie

Classical - Released April 1, 2016 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or - Choc de Classica
With this anthology of airs sérieux and airs à boire of the Grand Siècle, Les Arts Florissants launches a new series on harmonia mundi. We may listen to the tracks on this disc as contemporaries turned the pages of successful collections of songs alternating between invocations to Bacchus and invitations to love. Around William Christie at the harpsichord and his musicians, five singers offer multiple combinations of close-knit voices. From the intimacy of the salons to the liveliness of court banquets, these airs, models of refined skill, make light of the paradoxes of our hearts – for as an air by Lambert tells us: ‘Though Love creates all my grief, / I wish to love and to die loving.’ (Editor's Note)

William Christie

Art Songs, Mélodies & Lieder - Released April 30, 2021 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet
With this third volume of "Airs sérieux et à boire", the ensemble Les Arts Florissants return to this genre whose refinement had marked the French musical landscape for over a hundred years. By turns gallant, earthy, or spiritual, these vocal miniatures, prized at the French court, ushered in a ground-breaking style which opened the door to an endless variety of interpretations. "One can hardly find enough praise for the individuality of these inspired performers, for their skill to make the music animate the words ( . . . ) as they display a joyful unity of purpose. A unique event!" (Opéra Magazine). © harmonia mundi
