Louder Than Love

Soundgarden

Rock - Released January 1, 1989 | A&M

Hi-Res
Signing to a major label, Soundgarden take a step toward the metal mainstream with Louder Than Love, a slow, grinding, detuned mountain of Sabbath/Zeppelin riffs and Chris Cornell wailing. The production is quite murky, as the rest of the band tries to poke its way through Kim Thayil's guitar squall. There are some essential Soundgarden items mixed in, among them the haunting "Hands All Over," the punky "Full on Kevin's Mom," and the stereotypically macho metal stupidity of "Big Dumb Sex," whose ironic intent is often misconstrued. It's certainly worthwhile to sift through Louder Than Love, but don't expect consistency.© Steve Huey /TiVo

Uncovered

Shawn Colvin

Pop - Released January 1, 2015 | Fantasy Records

Hi-Res Booklet
Shawn Colvin is no stranger to a good cover. She's sung the songs of other writers throughout her career, even finding space for Warren Zevon's "Tenderness on the Block" on her 1992 breakthrough Fat City, but she hasn't devoted an entire album to covers since 1994's Grammy-nominated Cover Girl. Arriving 21 years after that album, Uncovered feels slightly spare and quiet in comparison -- there are no productions as bright and full as that on "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" -- but it follows the same basic formula as that album, with Colvin finding the quiet, intimate heart lying in each of these songs. She returns to a few of her favorite writers -- the first single pulled from Uncovered was "Hold On," and Tom Waits isn't the only repeated songsmith; she also repeats Robbie Robertson, reviving "Acadian Driftwood" this time around -- but casts her net a little wider than such expected celebrated singer/songwriters as Paul Simon, John Fogerty, Robert Earl Keen, Jr., Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Finn, finding room for Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street," Stevie Wonder's "Heaven Is Ten Zillion Light Years Away," and Brenton Wood's classic '60s soul tune "Gimme a Little Sign," here performed as a duet with Marc Cohn. These slightly left-of-center choices illustrate the sly inventiveness of Colvin's interpretations, how she can retain the melody and emotion of the tune while shaping it to fit her gentle touch, and if this skill isn't forceful, it's nevertheless satisfying and deceptively sturdy, sounding stronger with each subsequent play.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Uncovered, Vol. 1: Samuel Coleridge-Taylor

Catalyst Quartet

Chamber Music - Released February 5, 2021 | Azica Records

Hi-Res
With this release, the Catalyst Quartet launches the "Uncovered" series, devoted to unjustly neglected works by Black composers. The group begins with Afro-British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912), who a century ago would probably have been the best known of the group, with his cantatas on Longfellow's Song of Hiawatha widely performed and supported by the British musical establishment. Coleridge-Taylor's chamber music dates from early in his career before he traveled to the U.S. and began to investigate his African American roots, and to a degree, the works here have the flavor of student compositions, most of all the opening Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 1. All of the pieces show Dvořák as a model, and the most persuasive is the set of Five Fantasiestücke for string quartet, Op. 5, adept and thoroughly enjoyable extensions of the fantastic element in the Czech composer's music. The music certainly makes one regret Coleridge-Taylor's early death, probably the result of financial difficulties, and it also whets the appetite for future releases in the Catalyst's series; the performances, especially by clarinetist Anthony McGill in the Clarinet Quintet in F sharp minor, Op. 10, are very strong. The Clarinet Quintet also shows the influence of Brahms, whom Coleridge-Taylor's teacher, Charles Villiers Stanford, challenged him to emulate and even exceed ("You've done it, me boy!" Stanford exclaimed for his part). Azica errs with a rather harsh college concert hall sound, but this release more than accomplishes what it sets out to do. Volume 2 will be devoted to Florence Price, a composer in dire need of wider exposure.© TiVo

Uncovered, Vol. 2: Florence B. Price

Catalyst Quartet

Chamber Music - Released February 4, 2022 | Azica Records

Hi-Res
Almost forgotten for many decades, the African American composer Florence B. Price got a great boost when a large cache of her compositions was found in 2009. The exploration of these works by performers is ongoing and often yields interesting new items, as in this release in the Catalyst Quartet's "Uncovered" series, presenting forgotten works by Black composers. Four of the works here are world premieres, and none is at all common. Despite many obstacles in her compositional career, Price was quite prolific, and it seems to have been in the chamber music field that she worked out new ideas in merging the European legacy with African American materials. The Piano Quintet in A minor is typical of the larger works here in using Dvořák's basic language as a frame for the introduction of the latter. There are several examples of the ragtime-like "Juba" third movement that Price favored, and these arguably work better than those she wrote in the orchestral medium. The biggest revelations here are the two groups of settings of folk materials, the Negro Folksongs in Counterpoint for string quartet and the Five Folksongs in Counterpoint for string quartet, which treat tunes of various backgrounds (check out the setting of Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes). These are much more than academic exercises, weaving the folk songs into complex textures that evoke Ives a bit. The album contains two apparently unfinished works; these may be minor entries in the Price catalog, but the gorgeous melody of the Andante moderato second movement of the String Quartet in G major makes them worth one's time. The Catalyst Quartet approaches its task with both enthusiasm and skill, and the group shows that the ongoing reevaluation of Price's work is far from complete.© TiVo

The Beach Boys’ Party! Uncovered And Unplugged

The Beach Boys

Pop - Released November 20, 2015 | CAPITOL CATALOG MKT (C92)

Hi-Res
Capitol, which had already released ten Beach Boys albums in three years, was bugging the group for product that it could release in time for the 1965 Christmas season. To buy time while Brian Wilson began conceiving the Pet Sounds masterpiece, the group issued a set of covers, featuring '50s rock and R&B hits they had listened to as schoolboys, plus some newer sounds. Packaged as if it had been recorded at an actual party, it was in fact recorded in the studio over a few sessions, with friends, family and romantic partners adding sounds and vocals to create an informal atmosphere. With the exception of a bass guitar, all the instruments were acoustic; the acoustic guitar-and-bongo arrangements, in fact, give this a hootenanny campfire feel. Since its release, this album has gone up a few notches in critical esteem, praised for its loose, casual feel and insight into the group's influences. Realistically, though, its lasting appeal lies mostly with dedicated fans of the group, as fun and engaging as it is. It does have the massive hit "Barbara Ann," which actually features Dean Torrence (of Jan & Dean) on much of the lead vocals; other highlights include a rousing run through "Mountain of Love," an unexpected version of "The Times They Are a-Changin' sung by folk fan Al Jardine," and three Beatles covers. © Richie Unterberger /TiVo
