A Moon Shaped Pool

Radiohead

Alternative & Indie - Released May 8, 2016 | XL Recordings

Hi-Res Distinctions 4F de Télérama - Pitchfork: Best New Music
At the close of experimental solo careers for both Thom Yorke and Phil Selway, and the film soundtracks of Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead has finally come back to the fold with their ninth studio album. It's proof that talent never leaves you, more than thirty years after the band got together. Talent yes, surprises no. In fact, the biggest surprise on A Moon Shaped Pool is that there is no surprise. The Oxford grown quintet has undoubtedly just released their most "classic" album, almost with their eyes closed. Yorke is omni-present in the sound, and you can hear his influence throughout. As such, it's like listening to an old Radiohead record, without having heard it before. Radiohead have set aside their experimental tendencies in favour of sometimes minimalist, sometimes luxurious arrangements. Even in the most impressive arrangements for strings, Jonny Greenwood seems to be aiming for purity, (see Daydreaming). His diverse works on the 7th Art and, most notably, for the director Paul Thomas Anderson (Greenwood penned the soundtracks to There will be Blood, The Master, and Inherent Vice) have clearly given him a new vision that makes its presence felt. Even on the most intimate tracks (Desert Island Discs), Radiohead maintains a certain majesty, and when they get to post-rock (Full Stop and Present Tense), their musique becomes grandiose. With such an album, Radiohead pushes the legend slightly further, preserves its distinct style, and adds to its already legendary discography.© CM/Qobuz

Stitches

Nils Petter Molvaer

Jazz - Released August 27, 2021 | Modern Recordings

Hi-Res
After an unexpected interlude in 2018 with the Jamaicans Sly & Robbie (Nordub, a Qobuzissime record!), Nils Petter Molvær returns to the grind with Stitches, an album that becomes him now more than ever... In 1997, when the ECM label published his astonishing Khmer, audiences discovered a Norwegian trumpeter who shook up the jazz scene by dabbling in electronics and ambient sounds. He was like a distant cousin of Brian Eno and Jon Hassell... For Stitches, Molvær had surrounded himself with drummer Erland Dahlen, bassist Jo Berger Myhre and guitarist Johan Lindstrøm for a hybrid outing which is carried by the ample and wide-open sound of his instrument, which he has fully mastered. The spontaneity of his playing and his fluidity fit perfectly with the poetic character of this soaring nu-jazz. In its new-age sequences, the album never grows complacent. And when the electronics take centre stage, they often serve to lend greater density to the compositions. The world is in turmoil and, like a sphinx, Nils Petter Molvær is gazing at it calmly, intensely, spiritually... © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

I Might Be Wrong

Radiohead

Alternative & Indie - Released March 12, 2001 | XL Recordings

For their third release in 13 months, Radiohead let loose a mini-album of live material culled from four European dates and slapped them together into their standard excellent packaging adorned with manic drawings, scribbles, and text excerpts. I Might Be Wrong: Live Recordings, originally scheduled as a single for "I Might Be Wrong," is precisely what the title implies, a compilation of recordings and not a live album at all. While it seems as though Radiohead could have made it into a cohesive album if they had wanted to, or at least made this one sound like it was one show, what listeners find here is an uneven and incoherent set of Kid A sessions material that is sometimes strong but sometimes uninspired. When strong, the band seems as if it's in command by adding new texture and content. "Like Spinning Plates," "Everything in Its Right Place," and "Idioteque" are revelatory and at times feel almost new. Meanwhile, the track "I Might Be Wrong" just doesn't match in sound quality to the others, as the bass is completely lost and the additional percussion is way upfront. There are some serious benefits to be reaped from this collection, though. For those unlucky enough to not have seen any of the world tour of 2001, it is a serious treat to hear these studio-crafted songs played live (which also proves Radiohead are still a powerful rock band). But the real gift here is the last track, "True Love Waits." As yet to find itself on any of their singles or albums but played live for a number of years, it's easily one of Thom Yorke's most morose songs, but it's also one of his most powerful. In the end, it's a matter of Radiohead making some strange plays with the material that was recorded during the Kid A sessions. While the initial release of Kid A seemed logical and insanely cohesive, subsequent releases of that material (Amnesiac, Live Recordings) are incomplete. It might have been wiser to release Amnesiac and some of the material from this release as a complete Kid A sessions package, rather than a couple of thrown-together releases.© Sam Samuelson /TiVo

4 stars out of 5 -- "Sharp and feral rather than bludgeoning, cuts such as 'Reality Unfolds' and 'Victimized' scowl and howl, while 'You And I' sports the closest thing to a pop hook the band have ever forged."© TiVo

True Love Waits (Christopher O'Riley Plays Radiohead)

Christopher O'Riley

Classical - Released May 30, 2003 | Sony Classical

It's hard to approach a Radiohead tribute with anything but reservation, as the majority of the band's later work is difficult to replicate, especially if your arsenal consists of a single piano. Things aren't helped much thanks to Brad Mehldau's jazz interpretations leaving a bitter taste in the mouth of even the most die-hard Radiohead fan. That said, True Love Waits isn't a bad compilation if you were a fan of Mehldau's reworkings. However, if you were on the other side of the fence, it might not be the best album you'll listen to all year. Much to his credit, O'Riley chooses a wide range of songs from Radiohead's back catalog, forgoing the obvious temptation of selecting the recognizable hits. Some translate quite well into a solo piano setting, especially darker and low-key songs like "Bulletproof" and the subtle "Motion Picture Soundtrack." Unfortunately, this isn't always the case; several tunes turn into frenzied piano workouts that make O'Riley sound like he comes from the Richard Clayderman school of musical interpretation. Not without its redeeming qualities, True Love Waits comes off more focused on the skills of the piano player than the songs being paid tribute.© Rob Theakston /TiVo
