In the Skies

Peter Green

Rock - Released January 1, 1979 | Sanctuary Records

After almost a decade of personal, drug-addled hell since his 1970 debut The End of the Game, Peter Green begins his comeback with In the Skies, and a title tune that sounds downright hopeful compared to where he left off. Although Green shares lead guitar work with Snowy White, it's clear from his fluid technique and haunting tone that he can still play. "A Fool No More" is the kind of slow blues Green excels at. Robin Trower drummer Reg Isidore gives way on one track to Godfrey McLean, who played on The End of the Game. Green dips even farther back into his past, courtesy of keyboards by Pete Bardens, who gave him his first professional music job in 1966 in a band with Mick Fleetwood. Green's singing, never a particular strength, is not a weakness here. Five of the nine songs are instrumentals, continuing a longtime Green tradition. It's an unambitious but solid and welcome return by a guitarist who in his prime rivaled Eric Clapton. If that seems far-fetched, listen to A Hard Road by John Mayall's Bluebreakers or Then Play On by Fleetwood Mac.© Mark Allan /TiVo

Black Hawk Down

Hans Zimmer

Classical - Released January 15, 2002 | E2E Classics

Once again, director Ridley Scott has employed composer Hans Zimmer to score a motion picture, following their collaboration on Gladiator (2000) and Hannibal (2001). From ancient Rome to the world of a serial killer, Scott's settings vary considerably, and Black Hawk Down presents yet another musical challenge, set in Mogadishu, Somalia, during a failed mission by UN peacekeeping (i.e., U.S. military) personnel in 1993. Zimmer has done his homework on traditional North African music as it meets the late 20th century; his work combines identifiably Middle Eastern strains with elements of techno. The key to the approach is the use of vocalists Baaba Maal ("Hunger," "Still") and Rachid Taha (Taha's own co-composition "Barra Barra"). Although the music is quite aggressive early on, the later tracks reflect the mission's troubles. Denez Prigent and Lisa Gerrard's "Gortoz a Ran -- J'Attends" is distinctly elegiac, and the symphonic "Leave No Man Behind" toward the end makes it clear that, even if men haven't been left behind, they haven't necessarily been brought back alive. This sadness is given its final expression in a new recording of the traditional song "Minstrel Boy" by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros (an earlier version is on their 2001 album Global a Go-Go) that plays over the credits. Zimmer used an unusual method to play this score, putting together the BHD Band, consisting of himself on keyboards, guitarists Michael Brook and Heitor Pereira, and string players Craig Eastman and Martin Tillman, and in effect jamming on much of the music, with orchestral scoring added later. He has achieved a style that works well for the downbeat, if suspenseful, tone of the film and its exotic setting.© TiVo

From The Redwoods To The Rockies

Russ Freeman & The Rippingtons

Jazz - Released October 5, 1998 | Windham Hill Records

Aside from their mutual smooth jazz pedigree -- which include some of the genre's most critically acclaimed and best-selling recordings -- it would appear Russ Freeman and Craig Chaquico have little in common. Chaquico came to instrumental music in the early '90s from life as a rock & roller, and 15 years as the guitar anchor in Jefferson Starship. Freeman and his band the Rippingtons were there at the inception of the format, breaking through with albums like Moonlighting and Kilimanjaro that were as much about soundscape-heavy productions and picture-perfect melodies as his own jazz guitar chops. A skeptic could easily call their pairing on From the Redwoods to the Rockies (Windham Hill Jazz) a marketing director's concoction. But that would be overlooking the colorful possibilities that result when jazz meets rock, and when two nature boys -- whose love of the land runs as deep as their lust for music -- meet up somewhere between the mountains and trees. Truth is, almost any of these tunes would fit perfectly on a Chaquico or Rippingtons disc, depending on whose axe takes center stage. "Riders of the Ancient Winds" features a trademark Chaquico swaying, gently rolling groove and melody line, and until Freeman chimes in with a subdued electric solo (which eases into a background harmony line), it could easily be an outtake from any of Chaquico's solo efforts. Same throughout the title track, although the tender Chaquico ballad vibe is spruced up with a cool piano trio section led by David Benoit and a splash here and there of Freeman's laid-back acoustic soloing. On the other hand, Chaquico has never done much exotic music before, and so Freeman's sunny lines over gentle percussion -- again enhanced by Benoit's magic touch -- make "Samba" a stripped down Ripps tune, reminiscent of the tropical flavors of 1992's Weekend in Monaco.© Jonathan Widran /TiVo

The Notorious Byrd Brothers

The Byrds

Rock - Released January 3, 1968 | Columbia - Legacy

The recording sessions for the Byrds' fifth album, The Notorious Byrd Brothers, were conducted in the midst of internal turmoil that found them reduced to a duo by the time the record was completed. That wasn't evident from listening to the results, which showed the group continuing to expand the parameters of their eclecticism while retaining their hallmark guitar jangle and harmonies. With assistance from producer Gary Usher, they took more chances in the studio, enhancing the spacy quality of tracks like "Natural Harmony" and Goffin & King's "Wasn't Born to Follow" with electronic phasing. Washes of Moog synthesizer formed the eerie backdrop for "Space Odyssey," and the songs were craftily and unobtrusively linked with segues and fades. But the Byrds did not bury the essential strengths of their tunes in effects: "Goin' Back" (also written by Goffin & King) was a magnificent and melodic cover with the expected tasteful 12-string guitar runs that should have been a big hit. "Tribal Gathering" has some of the band's most effervescent harmonies; "Draft Morning" is a subtle and effective reflection of the horrors of the Vietnam War; and "Old John Robertson" looks forward to the country-rock that would soon dominate their repertoire.© Richie Unterberger /TiVo
