The Dream Thief

Shai Maestro Trio

Jazz - Released September 28, 2018 | ECM

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Indispensable JAZZ NEWS - Jazz News: Album du Mois - 5 Sterne Fono Forum Jazz
Following four albums that have helped established him on the contemporary jazz scene, Shai Maestro is taking a major step by combining with the ECM label. Still in a trio with his double bass accomplice Jorge Roeder and drummer Ofri Nehemya (who replaces regular Ziv Ravitz), the Israeli pianist is once again going down the path of sublime multi-layered narratives. The melodies are taken from jazz as well as Eastern traditional music, and even Western classical music. Whether he feels introspective (on Israeli Matti Caspi’s My Second Childhood) or overtly provocative (surprising interpretation of the classic These Foolish Things), he has kept his soft touch and refined musical language. Ever since 2012, when he released the first album with him as the frontman, his profoundly personal aesthetic has continued to impress. He possesses a strong narrative force and stays well wired into the times, like on the final composition What Else Needs To Happen?, in which Shai Maestro very subtly inserts the voice of Barack Obama giving a speech about gun control. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Gemini (Octave Remastered Series)

Erroll Garner

Jazz - Released April 17, 2020 | Mack Avenue Records

Hi-Res
Part of Mack Avenue’s wonderful Octave Remastered series, Gemini allows us to rediscover Erroll Garner in the last years of his life. Originally released in 1972, this groovy album was created along with double bassist Ernest McCarty Jr., conga player Jose Mangual and drummer Jimmie Smith. Supported by the omnipresent rhythm section, Garner plays not only piano but harpsichord too, revisiting standards such as How High the Moon, Tea for Two and These Foolish Things. The pianist also tackles more contemporary compositions, such as The Beatles’ Something. Like always, his unstoppable swing (one of the most recognizable in the history of jazz) radiates through this brilliant, multifaceted re-release. © Max Dembo/Qobuz

Bettye Swann

Bettye Swann

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released January 1, 2004 | Honest Jons

If Bettye Swann is remembered by anyone other than soul obsessives, it is for her chart-topping hit "Make Me Yours" from 1967. Hopefully, this collection will open a few ears to the low-key, genre-bending singer who blended the full-bodied gritty sound of Southern soul and the smooth sheen of soul from the urban North. It covers the years 1968 to 1970, after she left Money Records and set up shop with Capitol and producer Wayne Shuler. The union did not provide any hits, but the body of work is quite impressive. Swann was equally adept at slinky, sassy uptown soul like "(My Heart Is) Closed for the Season," "Cover Me," and "You're Up to Your Old Tricks Again" as well as down-home, heartbroken ballads like "Little Things Mean a Lot," the bluesy "Don't Touch Me," and Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine," but also unique blends of styles like her Baroque soul take on the Bee Gees' "Words" and her countrified funk version of Marvin Gaye's "Ain't It Peculiar." In fact, she often dipped into country music for material and came up with some impressive songs like her aching version of Patsy Cline's "Sweet Dreams," which comes darn close to the original in the heartbreak stakes. Her takes on "Stand By Your Man" and "Angel of the Morning" are beautiful and soulful reinterpretations, too. Unfortunately, her duet with Buck Owens on "Today I Started Loving You Again" remains in the vault, but her solo version was released and is quite wonderful. Bettye Swann certainly deserves to be discovered; this disc is packed with original, soulful, and exciting music from beginning to end. Credit to Honest Jons for putting it out. These Things Happen Too

G-Eazy

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released September 24, 2021 | BPG - RVG - RCA Records

Hi-Res
In 2014, Oakland rapper G-Eazy released These Things Happen following two mixtapes to serve as an official studio album debut. The set brought effortless flows and complex lyricism to the attention of the world, charting in the Top Ten and eventually achieving platinum status. Seven years later, These Things Happen Too offers an older, wiser sequel to the excited beginnings of These Things Happen, revisiting some of the themes and ideas from G-Eazy's debut with an updated perspective. "Running Wild (Tumblr Girls 2)" circles back to the debaucherous scenes and depictions of toxic relationships of 2014's "Tumblr Girls," sounding a little more worn out from the extra years of hard partying and chasing chaos. While These Things Happen found G-Eazy grappling with how the realities of fame didn't quite match his expectations, multiple songs on These Things Happen Too address how his relationship with fame has progressed. "Wanna Be Myself" is among the more detailed and mature of these, speaking to the perpetual state of performance demanded of celebrities, and how easy it is to completely lose track of your true self when the spotlight is always on you. "Breakdown" is similarly introspective, but deals more with addiction and mental exhaustion, and it tempers dark subject matter with a blindingly bright pop hook sung by Demi Lovato. Throughout These Things Happen Too, G-Eazy balances intensity and fun. For every song about doomed relationships, emotional exhaustion, or loss of identity, G-Eazy offers up moments of triumph and bravado, joined by top-shelf guests like Lil Wayne, Ty Dolla $ign, YG, and many others.© Fred Thomas /TiVo
