MAGDALENE

FKA Twigs

Dance - Released November 8, 2019 | Young

Distinctions Pitchfork: Best New Music
Back to the homeland for FKA twigs, who returned to her native Gloucestershire valleys for this second album “written from the heart”. “When in doubt, I just follow my gut and try to be around nature, go back to the Cotswolds.” Indeed, this is the storyline of the video for Home With You, where the former dancer leaves an overheated club charged with pheromones, and goes to a cottage to rest and recuperate, contrasting the purity of the countryside with the Gomorrah that is London. This introspective time in the singer’s life led her to take an interest in the story of Mary Magdalene, hence the name of the album, notably the way in which the history books have manipulated the story of Jesus’ companion. Musically, FKA twigs stays true to the “post-R&B” style, with her voice remaining the main attraction for an album which features production from Skrillex, Nicolas Jaar and Noah Goldstein (Drake, Teyana Taylor, Bon Iver…) and a feature from rapper Future on Holy Terrain. From her electro chapel, FKA twigs, sounding increasingly Björk-esque, continues to defy the norms of pop music (especially on the deconstructed Fallen Alien, the most experimental track on the album) and sighs into our ears, like a private concert from the confessional. Tones

Eric Johnson

Rock - Released March 1, 1986 | Warner Records

Tones, Eric Johnson's first solo album, is an exceptionally strong debut, and a record that is just as good as the guitarist's breakthrough 1990 release Ah Via Musicom. Grouped with long-time compatriots Roscoe Beck and Tommy Taylor, Johnson's trademark composing voice and so-sweet electric guitar are already on full display. True to the album's title, Johnson showcases many different guitar tones, from the violin-like sustain of his trademark distortion to the bell-like timbre of his clean-toned rhythm work. Johnson also sings on five of the nine songs on Tones, and his voice is as competently expressive as ever. The second half of this record is really where it moves from being simply "good" to "great." Emerging from Stephen Barber's almost new-agey Fairlight CMI vamp, "Trail of Tears" kicks into a driving groove punctuated by Johnson's chordal stabs and arpeggios and carried by one of the guitarist's best vocal melodies. The multi-tiered arrangement is also one of the high marks of Johnson's catalog. This track segues in turn into the wonderful "Bristol Shore." This song features Johnson making his guitar sound like a koto as well as throwing in some impossibly in-tune upper-register licks that are played so sweetly they seem to threaten to fly off into the stratosphere (pun intended). The lack of a "Cliffs of Dover," a catchy, driving instrumental showcase for Johnson's chops, does not cheapen Tones in any way. It is a beautiful and important album by one of the greatest electric guitarists ever to pick up the instrument.© Daniel Gioffre /TiVo

Asperities

Julia Kent

Alternative & Indie - Released October 30, 2015 | The Leaf Label

Hi-Res
On her fourth full-length album, Asperities, cellist Julia Kent continues to explore the dynamics between humanity and nature, but this time out, the focus is on conflict, be it internal, external, or international. The nine pieces on the album are tense and brooding in a way unheard on her previous solo recordings, occasionally peaking in thundering bursts of fury. Titles such as "Flag of No Country" and "Empty States" imply distrust in governments and a disillusionment with the state of the world, and the songs (especially "Empty States") are caustic to match. The album's compositions for cello and electronics rely less on field recordings than on Kent's previous work, making it feel stripped-down in some ways, but also fuller, more direct, and more cohesive in others. Even more so than before, the tracks are intense, dark, and arresting, and they radiate beauty while reflecting on discomforting, troubling subjects. The most electronic track, "Terrain," adds crunching, industrial-leaning beats and growling, vibrating bass tones, pausing for breath at its center before briefly returning to the lurching rhythm. The album's prettiest song, "Heavy Eyes," starts out calm and sparkling, but soon descends into a deep sense of melancholy, gracefully expressing regret and hopelessness. The swooping, diving strings of the striking "Tramontana" conclude this spellbinding album.© Paul Simpson /TiVo

West Coast Blues!

Harold Land

Jazz - Released January 1, 1960 | Original Jazz Classics

This reissue (which surprisingly has not yet come out in complete fashion on CD) was originally recorded for the Jazzland label. Tenor saxophonist Harold Land leads an all-star sextet that includes guitarist Wes Montgomery, trumpeter Joe Gordon, pianist Barry Harris, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes. Together, they perform three of Land's originals, "Don't Explain," and Charlie Parker's "Klactoveedsedstene," and an early version of Montgomery's "West Coast Blues." The music is as well-played and swinging as one would expect from this superior bop group.© Scott Yanow /TiVo
