Martha Argerich & Friends Live at the Lugano Festival 2013 (Édition StudioMasters)

Martha Argerich

Chamber Music - Released May 19, 2014 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason
Each year, Martha Argerich and her friends gather for the summer festival in Lugano, Switzerland, to perform a variety of chamber and keyboard works that showcase musical talents across generations. Highlights of these performances have been released annually on box sets that are representative of these artists' brilliant virtuosity and fine musicianship. The set for 2013 includes performances of works by Beethoven, Respighi, Liszt, Shostakovich, Ravel, Debussy, Offenbach, and Saint-Saëns, presented with enthusiasm by Argerich and her friends Mischa Maisky, Renaud Capuçon, Gautier Capuçon, Francesco Piemontesi, Alissa Margulis, Jura Margulis, Gabriela Montero, Cristina Marton, and many others, some of whom have become frequent guests at the festival. While most of the performances have an intimate character, as might be expected in the cello sonatas of Beethoven and Shostakovich, and the violin sonatas of Respighi and Ravel, there are larger scale works that frame the package: the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1, which Argerich performs with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, conducted by Hubert Soudant, and the chamber orchestra version of Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals, so there is some variety, though the emphasis is, as in previous years, on chamber music.© TiVo

Music by Chopin, Schumann & Albéniz - Prokofiev: Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 14

Orozco Rafael

Classical - Released January 1, 1967 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res
In 1966, a twenty-year-old Spanish artist won the Leeds International Piano Competition: Rafael Orozco. His Master's Voice pounced on the opportunity, signing a contract with the young man immediately before he was snatched up by the Dutch company Philips. His Master's Voice and Orozco made four records together over four years, with a special focus on Chopin. The 24 Preludes were released in 1968 and the 24 Etudes in 1971. In 1970 a Brahms LP (Sonata 3 - an absolute gem) was also released and was reissued a few weeks ago as previously mentioned on Qobuz.Released in 1967, this is Rafael Orozco’s very first work. The recital brings to light the pianist’s affinities. Schumann is up first with his fearsome Toccata. It sounds incredibly supple under Orozco’s fingers, divine wrists and sunny phrasing. It is a piece for a virtuoso. Orozco exhibits the same grace in Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat major: the attack of the first note is poignant and is telling of Orozco’s position at the piano; the left hand meanwhile is fluid, airy and almost floats. After the passionate Polonaise (Op. 44) we find two of Albéniz’s pieces from Iberia. Recorded twenty-five years before the Spanish pianist would record the four complete books (Valois, 1992). Evocación reveals brilliantly luminous phrasing and El Corpus Christi exhibits a sparkling sound. The album’s pièce de résistance is Prokofiev’s Second Sonata, which the pianist performs with a kind of obviousness. The tempos are lively (particularly the Allegro marcato, as well as the third movement, which is truly moving) and the expressive gestures glisten. In this respect, Vivace has rarely sounded so mischievous and rebellious. So it suits Prokofiev! This recital is a marvel - you could even call it a Qobuzissime. © Pierre-Yves Lascar/Qobuz

Vivaldi

Les Violons du Roy

Classical - Released March 1, 2016 | ATMA Classique

Hi-Res Booklet
This album from the Quebec City Baroque group Les Violons du Roy is titled simply Vivaldi. You don't get quite the range implied; the program consists mostly of concertos with one instrumental sinfonia from an opera. But it is a delightfully diverse set, including big Handelian outdoor-oriented pieces with horns; pastoral concertos for multiple winds; and intricate, multiple-violin pieces including a lithe reading of the familiar Concerto for four violins, strings, and continuo, Op. 3, No. 10 (RV 580). Les Violons du Roy, under their longtime assistant conductor Mathieu Lussier, eschew the high-octane approach of contemporary Italian groups, and one can wish for the syncopations to rock a bit more when they are essential to the structure of a movement. But the group is quick and holds together well. Sample the little-played, three-movement Sinfonia from the opera La verità in cimento (tracks 17-19): the opening movement is a study in register and dynamics of which the total serialists would have been proud; the slow movement opens like a flower; and the miniature finale is over before you know it. The orchestra's energy never flags here or anywhere else, and the result is a very fresh album of Vivaldi concertos that will appeal even to those with lots of shelf or hard drive space already allotted to the composer.© TiVo
