Bizet : Symphonie en ut, Jeux d'Enfants, Roma

Paavo Järvi/Orchestre de Paris

Classical - Released September 6, 2010 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
Paavo Jarvi conducts the Orchestre de Paris in a couple of Bizet favorites, plus one of his less well-known orchestral works. Bizet never envisioned the Symphony in C being performed, much less becoming his most popular work besides Carmen (which he also never knew would be as popular as it is) and other stage works. The Petite Suite, drawn from five selections from the piano duet suite Jeux d'enfants, is not as familiar, but it is still heard far more often than the final work on this recording, Roma. Roma was a disappointment for Bizet. It began as a symphony representing Italian cities he had visited. It was revised a couple of times, and performed in different versions, but it never really gelled into a full-fledged symphony. Hearing it next to the other two pieces, it just isn't as inherently appealing as them. There are some charming melodies, but nothing really memorable, and their development isn't very organic or necessarily interesting. The Scherzo, the first movement Bizet completed and liked the best, is the most successful. It has more of the Bizet playfulness that we're used to. Jarvi and the Orchestre try to bring some vitality to Roma, and it comes off as OK, but nothing more. The Symphony and the Suite are ingrained in the French repertoire, so the orchestra knows and performs them nearly flawlessly. However, that leaves it up to the conductor to make the reading distinctive. The way Jarvi seems to choose to do this is to rush through the music of the fast movements. To those who know the music more than just in passing, especially the Symphony, it often seems that there isn't room for breath or enough of a deceleration at the ends of phrases. It's a decent interpretation otherwise, and to those who aren't as familiar with the music, it will suit.© TiVo

Le Concert des Oiseaux. Vincent Bouchot: Le Carnaval des animaux en péril

La Rêveuse

Classical - Released February 10, 2023 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet
Several famous pieces of music based on birdsong appeared in the 19th and 20th centuries; those by Saint-Saëns, Britten, and Ravel are here, although Messiaen is not. However, the affinity between music and birdsong had been explored for centuries before that, and the early music group La Rêveuse here provides some delightful examples. The always pictorial François Couperin is represented, as is Rameau, but other composers are less familiar but no less charming. Sample the works by Theodor Schwartzkopff, Michel Blavet, and especially Michel Pignolet de Montéclair (1667-1737), whose "Les Ramages" ("The Songs") names a group of birds and then illustrates their songs. Then there are historical-instrument versions of Saint-Saëns, Britten, and Ravel. One may accept this idea or not, but even in the latter case, they don't do much to dent the charm of the whole. The program ends with a work by contemporary composer Vincent Bouchot, Le Carnaval des animaux en péril, a kind of a take-off on Saint-Saëns for the Anthropocene era that also calls forth a striking variety of instruments from La Rêveuse. Another questionable idea is that, in keeping with the practices of this group, recorded birdsong is heard between some of the tracks. Whatever aspects of this release might be doubtful, it rarely fails to bring a smile. © James Manheim /TiVo

Tchaikovsky: Ballet Suites for Piano Duo

Mari Kodama

Solo Piano - Released November 1, 2016 | PentaTone

Hi-Res Booklet
Some of Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky's most beloved music can be found in his three great ballets, which have become familiar to audiences in complete performances, as well as variously configured suites and arrangements. This hybrid SACD by pianists Mari Kodama and Momo Kodama offers transcriptions for piano duo by Sergey Rachmaninov, Anton Arensky, Eduard Leontyevich Langer, and Claude Debussy, which capture the brilliance and beauty of the original versions. One is struck by the faithfulness of the arrangers, who eschewed pyrotechnics in favor of accurately re-creating Tchaikovsky's music, and the keyboard versions often bring the orchestral sonorities and textures to mind. The selections also recommend themselves because of their tunefulness and accessibility, and it's likely that listeners will instantly recognize most of the pieces. For sampling, try the famous Adagio from Sleeping Beauty, the sparkling Overture from Nutcracker, or the Dance of the Cygnets from Swan Lake. The playing by the Kodama sisters is meticulous and finely polished, but their liveliness and virtuosity bring the music across with considerable excitement and a feeling of pure enjoyment.© TiVo

Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker (Excerpts)

Pyotr Illitch Tchaïkovski

Classical - Released November 26, 2007 | Avie Records

Booklet
Like much of Tchaikovsky's musical output, his ballet scores were often subject to criticism. This is certainly true of his first attempt at ballet, Swan Lake. Although still firmly rooted in the traditions of the day, Tchaikovsky certainly tried to move out on his own by making the score much more orchestra-based than most of his predecessors. This, of course, drew the ire of dancers and theater directors alike as the attention was taken away from the dancers and placed on the musicians. History shines more favorably on Tchaikovsky's independent streak, making him the first Russian composer whose ballet scores are played as stand-alone orchestral works, not to mention the fact that Tchaikovsky was unknowingly paving the way for a string of subsequent Russian ballet composers like Stravinsky and Prokofiev. Excerpts from Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and the perennial holiday favorite the Nutcracker are featured on this album by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Russian conductor Vasily Petrenko, who, at the rather young age of 29, became the orchestra's principal conductor in 2006, leads the orchestra in an extremely energetic and lively reading of these works. Most of the numbers are performed much more quickly than would ever be heard with a dance company, but the sprightly tempos make for especially exciting listening. Petrenko combines the orchestra's brilliant sound and exceptional technical precision with his own knowledge of the Russian master to create this enjoyable, appealing album. © TiVo

Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet, TH 42 & The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, TH 35

Lorin Maazel

Classical - Released January 1, 1981 | Telarc

Way, way back in the earliest days of digital recordings, one of America's first all-classical digital labels was Telarc, a company located in the great state of Ohio. Understandably, they specialized in recording Ohio orchestras, specifically the Cleveland Orchestra under its then-current music director Lorin Maazel. And, also understandably, they choose to record standard repertoire, in the case of this disc from 1981, a combination of Tchaikovsky's extremely popular Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture and his Nutcracker Suites. Maazel, who may be one of the most representatively American conductors of his generation, turns in straight-ahead interpretations -- his Overture draws an unbroken line from the opening woodwind chords through the rambunctious first theme, the romantic second theme and the violent development to the blazing coda, while his suite accentuates the work's brilliant colors and vivacious rhythms -- and the Cleveland Orchestra, which was then surely one of the great American symphonies, turns straightforward performances -- the strings are powerful, the winds are colorful, the brass is forceful, and the tympanist has the strength of 10 men because his attacks are clean. Telarc's sound is typical of its early digital recordings: very big, very bright, very vivid, perhaps just a bit too dynamic but still undeniably effective. Anyone looking for a coupling of the Overture and the Suite by an American conductor and orchestra will probably be well satisfied by this disc.© TiVo
