TRXYE

Troye Sivan

Pop - Released August 15, 2014 | EMI Recorded Music Australia Pty Ltd

Troye Sivan's major-label debut, and third EP overall, 2014's TRXYE showcases the up-and-coming Aussie singer's passionate and atmospheric electronic-based pop. Having already drawn favorable and deserved comparisons to Britain's James Blake, Sivan does nothing to dissuade such opinions on TRXYE. These are deeply felt, musically layered songs centered around Sivan's resonant, relaxed vocals and keyboard-heavy production style. Included here are the singles "The Fault in Our Stars" and "Happy Little Pill."© Matt Collar /TiVo

Something To Give Each Other

Troye Sivan

Pop - Released October 13, 2023 | EMI Recorded Music Australia Pty Ltd

Hi-Res
Refreshing and free, Something to Give Each Other is the sound of a maturing artist taking a bold step into the spotlight. Three years after his last EP and a full half-decade since his previous full-length, Troye Sivan finally does what he came to do, delivering an effervescent dose of pop that is all-at-once endearing, explicit, and exciting. In addition to the horny lead single "Rush" -- one of the most memorable singles of 2023 -- Something... is packed with a wide range of gems that range from club-friendly dance anthems ("Got Me Started," "Silly," and "What's the Time Where You Are?") to romantic, midtempo sweetness ("In My Room," "One of Your Girls"). The young artist responsible for his earlier, more introspective bedroom pop material is still at work here, while that liberated spirit that began to "Bloom" in 2018 has taken the reins and successfully reached a place where he can be himself. As such, Something to Give Each Other succeeds because Sivan has been freed: to be who he wants to be and express that through his most engaging and addictive album to date.© Neil Z. Yeung /TiVo

Les nuits de Paris

François-Xavier Roth

Theatre Music - Released January 27, 2023 | Bru Zane

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or
The Palazetto Bru Zane, the centre for French Romantic music in Venice, has an uncanny ability to rouse our curiosity for rare musical offerings. For each discographic release, the institution makes a point of indulging the listener, presenting them with only the very best: from the casting to the sound recording, not to mention the cleverly constructed programmes and the detailed illustrated booklets, everything is flawlessly produced. They essentially offer a first-class journey to the land of Romantic music. With Les Nuits de Paris, the institute once again proves it knows what it’s doing. At the helm, François-Xavier Roth and his ensemble Les Siècles take us on a dizzying tour of French society during the Belle-Epoque. At the time, the Parisian public routinely frequented dance venues—the upper classes went to the opera whilst the lower classes turned to cabarets, music halls and other “café-concerts”. Links were made between the profane and the sacred, the stylish and the mainstream. This cheerful disc sheds light on this entire dancing tradition. Alongside the great composers of the period (Massenet, Delibes and Saint-Saëns), the programme introduces other figures who were well-known in their time but have been somewhat forgotten today: Ernest Guiraud, Victorin Joncières and Ambroise Thomas. A special mention must go to Jeanne Danglas, one of the rare female composers to have been able to escape the patriarchal grip of the period.François Xavier Roth and his orchestra fully embrace the retro charm of these compositions, which might have been considered a little absurd if it weren’t for their radiantly joyful and deliciously playful performance. This is a wonderful journey through time. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz

Bloom

Troye Sivan

Pop - Released May 3, 2018 | EMI Recorded Music Australia Pty Ltd

Hi-Res
Seizing his moment with a tight set of glimmering pop confections, Australian singer/songwriter Troye Sivan embraces his role as a budding LGBT icon with Bloom, his aptly titled sophomore effort that signals his sexual awakening and personal growth into adulthood. On his 2016 debut, Blue Neighbourhood, fans met the boy; here, Sivan introduces them to a bold and fearless man. Brave and unapologetic, Bloom bursts forth with confidence, grace, and poise, allowing listeners to peek into a world that includes fumbles and mistakes, but also pure joy and romance. On the opener, "Seventeen," Sivan dives right in, recounting the loss of his virginity to an older man. Given the age gap, it's an uncomfortable but ultimately important moment for Sivan, both a rite of passage and endearing coming-of-age touchstone. From there, he spins between the dizzying extremes of young love, celebrating fleeting passions on the joyous "My My My!" and breezy innocence on the Ariana Grande-assisted "Dance to This" before lamenting the last gasps of a union on "Plum" and coming to terms with a breakup on the absolutely lovely "The Good Side." Additional highlights include the explicitly horny metaphor "Bloom" and the irresistible, 1975-esque "Lucky Strike." At a taut ten tracks, Bloom is an unambiguous statement from Sivan, clear in its intent to celebrate the highs and lows of queer love through the eyes of a proud pop star in the making.© Neil Z. In A Dream

Troye Sivan

Pop - Released August 21, 2020 | EMI Recorded Music Australia Pty Ltd

Hi-Res
Contending with a bad breakup and a global pandemic, Los Angeles-based pop singer/songwriter Troye Sivan returned home to Australia. Back in the place where he first started his journey to stardom, he got to writing and emotional bloodletting. The results are found on his fifth EP, In a Dream, a lovely burst of shimmering emotive pop that finds Sivan in the sonic space between his first two studio full-lengths, balancing pure journal reflections ("could cry just thinkin about you") with an increasingly carefree, dance-friendly spirit ("IN A DREAM"). Elsewhere, he continues to boldly explore sexuality and messy relationships, as the tender "STUD" explodes into a throbbing nocturnal club jam and "Rager teenager!" embraces youthful abandon atop electronic sparkles. As Sivan's evolution continues, it's a wonder to see him refine his sound and find his voice. In a Dream is quite the tease, hinting at more exciting stylistic growth while giving fans just enough to keep sated. © Neil Z. Yeung /TiVo

Blue Neighbourhood

Troye Sivan

Pop - Released July 15, 2015 | EMI Recorded Music Australia Pty Ltd

Hi-Res
Before his debut LP was even released, Troye Sivan was a star. One of the most popular YouTubers from Australia, he began a very savvy -- and millennial -- rollout campaign for his first album, Blue Neighbourhood. Relying on his army of social media followers, he released a trio of heartbreaking videos and a preview EP (Wild) to test the waters. The response was positive, to say the least, with Taylor Swift and Sam Smith preaching the Gospel of Troye. That hype is warranted. Blue Neighbourhood builds off of the smooth, sultry vibe of Wild (the six songs from that EP are all included on the deluxe version of the album), creating a tight snapshot of Sivan's experiences with love, youth, and yearning. Despite his age -- he turned 20 just six months before the album's release -- his voice is sultry and effortless, wounded and breathless. This is polished pop for a post-Lorde world: the beats subtly throb and the production (Alex Hope, Allie X) is icy cool. While guest turns by pals across the Tasman Sea (New Zealand's Broods on "Ease") and a fellow countryman (rapper Allday on "for him.") add some zest to the album, the biggest collaboration is found on album centerpiece "Heaven," which features guest vocals by Betty Who and was written with Jack Antonoff (Bleachers, Fun.) and Claire Boucher (known to most as Grimes). In the narrative of the album -- written from his own perspective as a young gay man growing up in a sheltered Jewish community in Perth -- it's the most poignant confession here: about his struggle to come out at the age of 14 and the potential fallout with family and faith. Similar simultaneous heartbreak and affirmation themes abound throughout Blue Neighbourhood, and it's a sparkling, triumphant experience. On album closer "Suburbia," Sivan paints a bittersweet picture that most listeners will be familiar with: mundane scenes from his childhood neighborhood, the same one that made him who he is, but ultimately the one that he'll leave for better things. Already at his young age he's grown too big for his surroundings. It's exciting to hear someone so young and confident on the cusp of greatness.© Neil Z. Yeung /TiVo

Berlioz : Les Troyens (Live)

John Nelson

Full Operas - Released November 24, 2017 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or - 4F de Télérama - Gramophone Record of the Year - Gramophone Award - Gramophone: Recording of the Month - Victoire de la musique - 4 étoiles Classica
We will gladly forgive the occasional "weakness" in sound technology in this recording of Troyens by Berlioz (recorded live in concert in April 2017). In light of the first-rate quality of the music and vocals that appear on the disc (a majority of which are French voices, with Stéphane Degout at their head) this immense work is from the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra and the three choirs which have been brought together – because the work demands immense swelling choirs – which are the choir of the Opéra national du Rhin, the Opéra National de Bade, and the Strasbourg Philharmonic's own choir. This recording rests, of course, on the complete original edition, which gives the listener a chance to hear Les Troyens as the work was performed in 1863, at the Théâtre-Lyrique, in which some intense chopping saw Acts I and II condensed into one part and Acts III to V into another, producing two distinct operas (La Prise de Troie and Les Troyens à Carthage). We also get a taste, naturally, of Berlioz's immensely rich orchestral innovations: with every new work, he would invent some exciting new prototype from scratch, never content to rest on his laurels. The listener should note the presence of six saxhorns, recently invented by Adolphe Sax (of whom Berlioz was an indefatigable champion, even if he didn't often use his instruments in his scores, no doubt because of the poor quality of the early instrumentalists who learned - however well or badly - Sax's instruments); bass clarinet, and an army of percussion pieces including several instruments which must have been rare in those days: crotales, goblet drums, tom-toms, thunder sheets... clearly, this is a milestone in the Berlioz discography. © SM/Qobuz
