Certified Lover Boy

Drake

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released September 3, 2021 | OVO

Hi-Res
Since 2016 and his fourth album Views, Drake has changed dimension and his artistic direction. Seeking the musical hit, often with brilliance, allowing all his influences to bloom on his mixtape More Life in 2017 or dividing the critics with Dark Lane Demo Tapes in 2020, here he is returning to his first loves. Certified Lover Boy is frontal and gargantuan in terms of lyrics as Drake has something to say. Starting with settling scores with Kanye West or with the industry. But after the storm comes the calm, as with the tracks Pipe Down or 7am On A Bridle Path, these are the moments when the Canadian can leave aside the discursive to at last please himself, and to explore what he does best. On the first tracks such as Champagne Theory or Papi’s Home, Drake has superbly placed Certified Lover Boy under the sampling prism. But that is only a foretaste. For when he summons Metro Boomin to perform in Knife Talk or the trap bosses Future and Young Thug on Way 2 Sexy, he cuts to the essential, looks ahead and makes this album one of his best releases since 2015. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz

Waltz for Koop

Koop

Jazz - Released January 1, 2001 | Diesel

Sweet vocal jazz for the post-club generation that could have been made decades ago, Koop's debut album finely treads the line between the hipster posturing and lounge perfection that is the specialty of acid jazz radio guru Gilles Peterson. Lush orchestration and hard bop rhythms make Waltz for Koop a pleasing sensation, but it is the rotating cast of vocalists that gives the album a strength beyond kvetch. Newcomers Cecilia Stalin and Yukimi Nagano both follow the fluttering vocal lineage of Astrud Gilberto on two songs each. The ladies perform effortlessly next to songs featuring certified vocal greats Earl Zinger and Terry Callier, each of whom wrote the lyrics to their respective numbers, "Modal Mile" and "In a Heartbeat." Callier's turn is the highlight of the album, with Koop augmenting the master's voice and their own retro melodies with subtly modern sounds, creating a fusion that remains true to the traditional form while staking their own 21st century musical claim. Though Koop occasionally steps into pretension (the album contains several unnecessary vocal interludes taken from old jazz programs), Waltz for Koop is one of those rare albums that succeeds in paying homage to the artist's heroes without sounding like watered-down versions of said forerunners. Put any of this album's songs on a mix tape next to a classic by Elis Regina or Chet Baker, and see if it doesn't fit together.© Joshua Glazer /TiVo

Dreamer

Bobby Bland

Blues - Released January 1, 1974 | Geffen*

Barri's slightly antiseptic production style and Michael Omartian's arrangements weren't the equivalent of Joe Scott's immaculate collabrations with Bland, but this 1974 album's "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City" and a meaty "I Wouldn't Treat a Dog (The Way You Treated Me)" were both huge hits.© Bill Dahl /TiVo

The End Of The F***ing World (Original Songs and Score)

Graham Coxon

Film Soundtracks - Released January 26, 2018 | Graham Coxon

Born in West Germany in 1969, Graham Coxon came to fame as the guitarist in Blur. But in moving from pop to music for moving pictures, Coxon has not lost one bit of his predilection for song. And so this soundtrack contains impressive homages to country, rock and folk songs from the 70s, like Angry Me and the ballad Saturday Night. Adapted from a graphic novel by Charles Forsman, this series, which came out on Netflix in 2017, jars audiences with its humorous tale of a psychopathic teenager. Despite this unusual tone, there is no hint of a pastiche in Graham Coxon's work. Everything in his music testifies to his sincere love of the music of the 1970s. ©NM/Qobuz
