Things Are Swingin'

Peggy Lee

Comedy/Other - Released November 3, 1958 | Blue Note Records

Midway through a small lull in her live performance career, Peggy Lee recorded the stereo LP Things Are Swingin' in Hollywood during May 1958, at the same sessions that produced the biggest hit of her career, "Fever." (Though not on the original LP, it was added to the 2004 reissue as a bonus track.) Still, Things Are Swingin' isn't a high point in Lee's career, especially when considered among her many successes of the late '50s (like the following year's Beauty and the Beat!). Though her instincts and powers of bewitchment were faultless as ever, she betrayed a few weaknesses in her normally excellent voice (perhaps a result of her semi-retirement at the time), and the ten-piece studio orchestra -- including session heavyweights Don Fagerquist, Barney Kessel, Bob Enevoldsen, Howard Roberts, Pete Candoli, and Shelly Manne -- isn't given much to work with by conductor Jack Marshall. Scattered moments of brilliance abound, however, including Lee's own title song (a staple of her later live show, written with Marshall), the sleepily sensual "You're Getting to Be a Habit With Me," and "Alright, Okay, You Win," a bluesy lead that became a hit in 1958 alongside "Fever."© John Bush /TiVo

Number Ones

Bee Gees

Pop - Released November 1, 2004 | Bee Gees Catalog

The problem with the recent spate of "number one" collections from the pop elite -- the Beatles, Michael Jackson, and now the Bee Gees -- is that they're consistently marketed as "greatest-hits" collections. The conceptual weight of "number one" singles for the average listener is about as heavy as the slabs of wax they came out on, and compiling an entire record around them only shines the spotlight on the tracks that suffered the cut. In the Bee Gees' case, it's the omission of classics like "Nights on Broadway," "New York Mining Disaster 1941," "If I Can't Have You," and "More Than a Woman" -- the latter does appear on the European versions -- that causes Number Ones to pale in comparison to 2001's highly superior Their Greatest Hits: The Record.© James Christopher Monger /TiVo

Melt Away: A Tribute To Brian Wilson

She & Him

Alternative & Indie - Released July 22, 2022 | Fantasy

Hi-Res
M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel's first set of new music in six years, Melt Away: A Tribute to Brian Wilson, is a love letter to one of the duo's biggest influences. Since emerging in 2008, She & Him have quietly curated a catalog that nimbly toes the line between innovation and novelty. Unabashed lovers of all things vintage pop -- the pair's self-penned material is sonically congruent with their myriad holiday and cover songs -- the dewy-eyed Melt Away fits snugly into the She & Him canon. Commencing with a genial rendition of Wild Honey's "Darlin'," the 14-track set digs deep into the Wilson songbook, with only "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "Don't Worry Baby," and "Do It Again" -- the latter of which features the head Beach Boy himself on lead vocal -- channeling oldies radio. Ward's dusty baritone lends itself well to breezy confections like "Kiss Me, Baby" and "Darlin'," but not so much to Wilson's more dulcet melodies. For those, he defers to Deschanel, whose rich, Spector-esque harmonies and emotive leads achieve a fluidity that Ward can only muster on the guitar. When the two persuasions collide ("Til I Die," "Don't Talk [Put Your Head on My Shoulder]," "Please Let Me Wonder"), it's like a softly swaying hula doll on a deuce coupe dashboard. Despite the occasional misstep, Ward and Deschanel's reverence for the source material is evident throughout -- both artists grew up in Southern California. Their renderings of "Don't Worry Baby" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" may be ramshackle, but much like the originals, they're delivered with unguarded joy and wide-eyed innocence.© James Christopher Monger /TiVo
