The Allen Toussaint Collection

Allen Toussaint

Jazz - Released April 30, 1991 | Rhino - Warner Records

Allen Toussaint's contribution to New Orleans R&B is indelible and his presence can be felt throughout classic recordings from the late '50s, '60s, and beyond. His name, though, is the province of connoisseurs, those who peruse album jackets looking for who wrote that great song or wrote out that phenomenal arrangement. Many who know his name may not even know that he was a solo recording artist, partially because his discography is a little confusing, as he cut for little New Orleans record labels, then signed with Reprise, before returning to sporadic waxings for indies. Of all the albums and compilations that have poured onto the market, the best, by far, is Reprise's The Allen Toussaint Collection, even if it spotlights just a small portion of his career -- namely, his '70s recordings for Reprise. True, this doesn't have all the great songs he's written, or records he's made, but it does provide an irresistible, comprehensive overview of his best albums. These aren't nearly as gritty as any of his productions of the '60s, lacking the earthiness of, say, Lee Dorsey or the down-and-dirty grind of the Meters. Instead, it's elegant, sexy music -- witness how "From a Whisper to a Scream" eases its way out of the speakers as the collection begins, seducing the listener, not hitting them in the gut. Even the funkiest moments here have style and are delivered subtly, which only makes them funkier, while putting such stylistic detours as the trippy "Southern Nights" into perspective. The individual albums Toussaint made for Reprise range from very good to excellent, yet this simply named collection eclipses them all, since it has all the best moments, expertly sequenced. It may be softer than his famous productions, but it's every bit as good and essential; in fact, it's one of the greatest greatest-hits albums of '70s soul, funk, and R&B.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Twilight Of The Gods - The Ultimate Wagner Ring Collection

Stephanie Blythe

Classical - Released September 14, 2012 | Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

Hi-Res Booklet
In spite of the hype of its packaging (whose intent seems to be to persuade that Wagner's Ring is as interesting as the epic Lord of the Rings and Star Wars films), this two-disc set offers a good sampling of highlights from the Metropolitan Opera's production of the complete cycle, unveiled between 2010 and 2012. The production by Robert Lepage generated considerable controversy, particularly over its gargantuan scenic elements, which necessitated rebuilding the Met's stage. Deutsche Grammophon has released the video of the Met's Ring, but there are no indications of plans to release a complete audio version, so this may be the only opportunity for anyone who was not a fan of the visual elements to simply listen to the music.James Levine conducts the first two operas, but had to withdraw from the project for health reasons and Fabio Luisi, now the Met's principal conductor, leads the last two. Both draw sumptuous, expansive, dramatically surging performances from the Met Orchestra, whose playing throughout is thrilling. The singers are all at least very fine; although their consistency may not stand up to the casts of some recordings, there are no weak links. Several performers stand out for their remarkably astute and memorable singing and acting. Eric Owens' Alberich is exceptionally well-developed and emotionally complex, and his oaken tone is unforgettable. Stephanie Blythe's Fricka is sharply etched and similarly impressive. Jonas Kaufmann's baritonal tenor beautifully suits Siegmund, and he sings with Italianate fervor and heat. Hans-Peter König is chilling in the villainous roles of Fafner, Hunding, and Hagen. The set would make a good but brief introduction to The Ring for the uninitiated, and should be a teaser for anyone curious about the Met's ambitious production.© TiVo

Ultimate Collection: Sons Of The Pioneers

Sons Of The Pioneers

Country - Released January 1, 2002 | HIP-O - (IS)

For really exhaustive coverage of the work of this groundbreaking cowboy harmony group, you'll want to invest in the Bear Family series; for a quick, budget-priced overview, try this label's Tumbling Tumbleweeds compilation. But for a more generously packed and lushly packaged overview collection (at full price), this is an excellent choice. It consists mainly, of course, of all the genre-defining hits you'll expect: "Cool Water," "I'm an Old Cowhand," "Riders in the Sky," "So Long to the Red River Valley," and more. Pre-1937 recordings feature the singing of founding member Roy Rogers, who is heard to particularly fine effect on the gorgeous "Blue Bonnet Girl," and one track (the jazzy "I'm an Old Cowhand") even features a guest vocal by Bing Crosby. The sound is of limited quality, but that's to be expected with vintage recordings. Highly recommended.© Rick Anderson /TiVo
