The Platinum Collection

Queen

Rock - Released January 1, 2000 | Hollywood Records

With Queen officially enshrined in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Hollywood Records reintroduces the band yet again with the release of Platinum Collection, Vols. 1-3. While Vols. I & II are full of Queen classics you already know by heart, the third cobbles together odds and sods from the far corners of Queen's canon along with solo cuts from Freddie Mercury and Brian May. Opening with the operatic rock classic "Bohemian Rhapsody," it's easy to hear not only how this British quartet achieved the kind of global acclaim that ensured they'd be enshrined alongside the likes of the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. When they weren't dabbling in playful, '50s-flavored rock & roll ("Crazy Little Thing Called Love"), catchy glam ("Killer Queen"), or hard-edged funk ("Another One Bites the Dust"), Queen was capable of delivering heartfelt love letters ("You're My Best Friend"). The band's '80s output is equally intriguing, ranging from the hard-hitting "Headlong" to duets with David Bowie ("Under Pressure") and soaring movie anthems ("One Vision"). The third volume features more movie themes ("Princes of the Universe"), Freddie Mercury covering the Platters ("The Great Pretender"), and cameos by contemporary artists like Wyclef Jean, George Michael, and Elton John.© TiVo

The Platinum Collection

Enigma

Pop - Released January 1, 2009 | Virgin

Platinum Collection is a triple-disc set that contains one disc of Enigma’s greatest hits, one disc of remixes, and one disc of “The Lost Ones,” brief instrumental snippets that were used as source material and ideas for full-length tracks. Naturally, this last disc is what’s interesting for the hardcore; unlike the rest of the set, this disc consists of unreleased material, but even the hardcore may find this slightly ephemeral; after all, these were designed as something like work tapes, not for release. The rest of the set is a good overview of basics, but it’s still unclear exactly who this is for, as this recycles too much for the hardcore, and it’s too lengthy for the casual fan.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Don Covay

Soul - Released March 19, 2007 | Woah Dad!

Don Covay is one of the most diverse vocalists to ever come out of the Atlantic stables. The man could sing blues, hardcore Southern soul, early funk, jazz old-school -- as in Joe Turner styled rhythm & blues, and rock. The man can sing anything he decides to and puts his mark on everything he does. And what's more, many of those songs are his own. What is borne out by this 22-track Warner Platinum Collection -- a single-disc version of the Rhino package that came out in the '90s, is that Covay's reach was not only brilliant, but his choices were eclectic, and in some cases revelatory. Sure, there are the big hits like "Seesaw," "Mercy Mercy," "Sookie Sookie," "Come on In," et. al. But more than this are the lesser know numbers like his "Fat Man," where it becomes plain and simple to see the place Mitch Ryder snagged his vocal attack from. Add to this the fantastic tunes Covay wrote with Steve Cropper (aside from the bigger hits mentioned above), like "I Never Get Enough of Your Love" and "Iron Out the Rough Spots." Then there are the covers: a stellar version of Allen Toussaint's "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky," Percy Mayfield's "You Must Believe in Me," and Big Bill Broonzy's "Key to the Highway." All of these tracks are stellar: they're all raw, wild, and wooly by one of the greatest soul men ever. This is a dynamite set and should be snagged immediately.© Thom Jurek /TiVo

Jennifer Warnes

Pop/Rock - Released July 2, 2004 | BMG Heritage

Download not available
It's a given that any collection by Jennifer Warnes with "Right Time of the Night" and her two legendary duets -- "Up Where We Belong" with Joe Cocker and "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" with Bill Medley -- is worth a three-star rating. It's the other material that offers a deeper view of this truly enigmatic artist, but like most compilations that bear her name, it doesn't go deep enough. These 12 cuts come strictly from Warnes' Arista years from 1972-1979, with the soundtrack and best-of cuts from among other BMG-affiliated labels. There are three cuts from her self-titled debut for the label, four from Shot Through the Heart, one from the criminally underrated The Hunter, and one from her best-of, as well as the soundtrack cuts and one other -- "It Goes Like It Goes" -- from the picture Norma Rae. While the aforementioned tracks are enough for most fans, her version of Boudleaux Bryant's country classic "Love Hurts" is devastatingly beautiful and is arguably a defining one. Her own "I Know a Heartache When I See One" is also here, as is her gorgeous read of the Bacharach/David classic "Don't Make Me Over," which comes close to topping the Dionne Warwick original. Warnes' read of Bob Dylan's "Sign on the Window" may sound radically different from the Dylan/Band original version, but it is an honest and deeply moving song in her hands. Likewise is her gorgeous cover of Jesse Winchester's "You Remember Me" and Mike Scott's (of the Waterboys) "The Whole of the Moon" from The Hunter. Unfortunately, there is no single collection that defines Warnes' considerable achievement (though Love Lifts Us Up from Australia's Raven label at least cross-licenses material) and none include material from her watershed Famous Blue Raincoat. This might be an OK investment for the money, but it still falls far short of the mark unless all you want is the most obvious material.© Thom Jurek /TiVo
