Trio sud

Sylvain Luc

Jazz - Released January 1, 2002 | Dreyfus Jazz

Trio Sud, Sylvain Luc's second outing with bassist Jean-Marc Jafet and drummer André Ceccarelli, is a riot of musical diversity, featuring highly creative readings of everything from Horace Silver ("Out of the Night Came You," "Peace") to Miriam Makeba ("Pata Pata") to Barry Manilow ("Could It Be Magic"). Luc's acoustic guitar tone is effervescent, his chops often staggering. He can swing like mad ("La Complainte de la Butte"), but he's equally informed by Brazilian, French, Basque, and gypsy traditions. His closing arrangement of Tárrega's Recuerdos de la Alhambra shows more than a passing familiarity with classical guitar literature. And he's a strong writer too, as is shown by two originals, "Eraldi" and "Irdir." (Jafet, who contributes the bop-blues line "Don't Tell Me," is no slouch.) Fans of acoustic jazz guitar will be knocked out.© David R. Adler /TiVo

Sylvain Luc

Jazz - Released January 1, 2006 | Dreyfus Jazz

Sylvain Luc is a master of understatement. Unlike so many other, often overambitious jazz guitarists, he understands the concept of less-is-more, valuing spaces and pauses as much as he does the sounds that fill those spaces the rest of the time. Luc's acoustic guitar touch is light but forceful, his probing expressions constantly brimming with color, surprise and sensitivity. That his supporting players are on the same page makes all the difference, too: Pascal Rey, the standard drummer/percussionist, and the Iranian brothers Keyvan and Bijan Chemirani, who play a small collection of Eastern drums (daf, zarb, bendir and udu), are particularly busy punctuating the air with an array of clicks, pops and bangs of all sorts, and Luc generously fleshes out his own stringed thoughts throughout with bold, well-defined adornments from cello, clarinet, harmonica and piano. The world music flavorings are fitting for the broader vision Luc is aiming at here -- the guitarist is French and comes from a family of gypsy musicians, so his international leanings are part and parcel of his outlook, lending a multicultural sense to what is essentially a Western music. Whether performing his own material or reinventing melodies from the Doors (the opening "Light My Fire" sets the tone nicely by indicating that this record is going to dodge expectations), James Taylor, Paul McCartney, Joe Jackson (an exquisite and imaginative "Steppin' Out") or Keith Jarrett (Luc is brave), Luc's scholarly technique never overwhelms his playfulness and burning desire to create something truly original.© Jeff Tamarkin /TiVo

Sylvain Luc

Jazz - Released March 31, 2000 | Dreyfus Jazz

This terrific trio brings to the table a quiet energy that smolders slowly as a fine, aromatic cigar. Acoustic guitarist Luc is the fuse, bassist Jafet the smoke, and drummer Ceccarelli the controlled fire. They are electrifying without using electronics. Only a small handful of standards are included. A nicely re-arranged 5/4 take on "A Night in Tunisia" cuts close to flamenco in its intriguing guitar reharmonizations, "There Will Never Be Another You" is a fast bopper, "Moon River" sports a pristine start and bossa body, while the pop tune "This Guy's in Love With You" is modified with a kinetic 4/4 Afro-Cuban groove. In fact, the key for many of the originals is their solid groove. 6/8 informs "Jade Et Melody" or the quicker "Chez Laurette," an easy blues shuffle walk to waltz shifts back and forth on "Mojo," while "Roots 6406" is more of a soul groove shuffle. A short drum solo, "Ouverture," precedes the 5/4 "Ameskeri" with contrasting sounds delicate and shrunken by Luc's guitars, and Ceccarelli goes it alone for four minutes on the pulsing "Requiem." There's also the balladic to swinging "Little Man, You've Had a Busy Day" and the tender samba "Bella Vista." The test of timelessness in the worth of music is in a repeated listening process. This fine recording delivers that constant joy and consistent freshness, time after time. Recommended.© Michael G. Nastos /TiVo

Ambre

Sylvain Luc

Jazz - Released January 1, 2003 | Dreyfus Jazz

Acoustic guitarist Sylvain Luc makes a breathtaking solo recording that finds this critically acclaimed world jazz guitarist in an elegant and deeply nuanced setting. Known for his ability to bring a reflective, delicate quality to any composition, Luc is not only romantic in his improvisations but brings a solid sense of jazz swing to Ambre. By recording in multi-track with multiple guitars: nylon, steel, and the rarely heard fretless guitar, Luc achieves beautiful accompaniment on such great songs as "A Child Is Born,""All Blues," and "Ambre." By tuning the E and A strings an octave lower on electric guitar and electric-acoustic guitar, Sylvain Luc offers his audience bass accompaniment on part one of "A Child Is Born." The deeper resonance adds a hearty dimension to this beloved jazz standard. The melody on the second part of the same song is approached by using a fretless nylon string electro-acoustic guitar. The title track is a beautiful ballad that represents the very warmth of its name. Luc wrote this folk ballad and plays its thoughtful melody in such a way as to spotlight his technical skills, the rhythms of the Basques, and his deep sense of jazz improvisations. On "Folklore Imaginaire" Sylvain Luc uses three guitars to play percussion, accompaniment and melody. The percussive sound is achieved by slapping the sides of the steel-string electric acoustic guitar; accompaniment is achieved with the same guitar but with the E string tuned to D, and the melody is played on steel string electric acoustic without the slapping. These techniques add several sterling dimensions to this Luc original. It is the type of song that students can use to learn or improve improvisational skills and to further their own songwriting technique. Solo or accompanied, Sylvain Luc is rapidly coming into his own as a world class guitarist as a result of his performances with Bireli Lagrene,Michel Legrand and by drawing upon the influences of such great jazz icons as Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, and John Scofield.© Paula Edelstein /TiVo
