The Anthology

A Tribe Called Quest

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released August 4, 2003 | Jive

For those who haven't discovered that A Tribe Called Quest made several of the best LPs in hip-hop history, Anthology is a perfect way to encapsulate the trio's decade-long career into one manageable portion. All of their best and biggest songs are here, from the early neglected joint "Luck of Lucien" to classic jazz-rap from The Low End Theory like "Jazz (We've Got)," and their 45-rpm peak with "Award Tour," all the way to their last big hit, "Find a Way," from 1998's The Love Movement. Yes, anyone who enjoys hip-hop needs to own at least Midnight Marauders and The Low End Theory, but Anthology succeeds in delivering all the highest points from a great hip-hop group's career. The collection also includes the first solo track from Q-Tip, 1999's "Vivrant Thing."© John Bush /TiVo

Punk

Young Thug

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released October 15, 2021 | 300 Entertainment - Atl

Hi-Res
This is a fantastic album from start to finish. This fifth Young Thug release, Punk, is a flavoursome display of our protagonist's scientific knack for melody. The Atlanta rapper has managed to bring sentimentality into trap music, even if it means being accused of betraying the genre. But listening to this album, it's clear that he's taking things forward in leaps and bounds. Punk has a steamy quality to it and is marked by the influence of its main beatmaker, Charlie Handsome. It's got depth, courtesy of guitars, piano arpeggios and drum machines, and the great Metro Boomin producing the ballad Stupid/Asking, and Kanye West and Pi'erre Bourne putting together the chaotic synthetic instrumentation of Rich Nigga Shit. That is also the track that sees Young Thug bring Juice WRLD back from the dead, as he does on Day Before, the last track recorded with Mac Miller the day before he died. That offers a poignant moment, handled with grace. Punk is undoubtedly among the best American rap releases of 2021. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz

Beats, Rhymes & Life

A Tribe Called Quest

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released July 15, 1996 | Jive

With each of its first three albums, A Tribe Called Quest seemed to be on its way to bigger and better things, artistically and commercially. Beats, Rhymes and Life promptly ended that streak and still ranks as the group's most disappointing listen. Amplifying the bare beats-and-bliss of The Low End Theory but erasing the hooks of Midnight Marauders, Beats, Rhymes and Life simply wasn't a compelling record. In fact, A Tribe Called Quest sounded bored through most of it -- and, to put it bluntly, there wasn't much to get excited about either. Previously so invigorating and idea-driven, Q-Tip and Phife strutted through their verses, often sounding confused, hostile, and occasionally paranoid (check out the battle tracks, "Phony Rappers" and "Mind Power"). Meanwhile, the skeletal productions offered little incentive to decode the lyrics and messages, most of which were complex as expected. Though several other tracks had solid productions (like the spry, bass-driven backing to "Phony Rappers"), Beats, Rhymes and Life saw A Tribe Called Quest making its first (and only) significant misstep. (Constant touring off the success of Midnight Marauders may have been a factor.) Yes, they were still much better than the vast majority of alternative rappers, but it seemed they'd lost their power to excite. One of the few successes was a surprising R&B crossover called "1nce Again" (featuring Tammy Lucas).© John Bush /TiVo

World's Most Stressed Out Gardener

Chad VanGaalen

Alternative & Indie - Released March 19, 2021 | Sub Pop Records

Hi-Res
With a title to match its chaotic tone, World's Most Stressed Out Gardener is the seventh album from Chad VanGaalen, the Calgary-based singer, songwriter, and illustrator known for his eclectic kitchen-sink style and peculiar visual aesthetic. Since joining the Sub Pop label in 2005, VanGaalen has remained reliably true to his own D.I.Y. ethos, recording most of his albums at home, playing practically all of the instruments, and designing his own artwork and videos, which are populated with colorful creatures and wild, sometimes disturbing scenes. With every release, it's clear he has imagination to spare. His previous album, 2017's Light Information, doubled down on underlying currents of anxiety and alienation, and while elements of this spill over into Gardener, the whole of the record is a far more sprawling and disconnected affair. Segueing from tranquil space folk to tumultuous quasi-orchestral indie rock, often within the same track, VanGaalen unloads his whims with an almost frantic gusto. The results are as confounding as they are dazzling, though ultimately skewing toward the latter given the breadth and scope of his imagination. What Gardener lacks in cohesion, it generally makes up for in its sense of adventure and richness of experience. From the cosmic grooves of "Starlight" and "Nightwaves" to the bucolic folk of "Where Is It All Going?," there's a little something for everyone here. Interestingly, VanGaalen claims that Gardener began as an instrumental flute record, then morphed over a period of a few years into the unruly chamber folk/experimental pop beast it now resembles. Scattered among the more typical guitar-bass-drum elements are dreamy wind instruments, plucked cellos, pots, pans, and snippets of tape-recorded chatter from his young children. It can all be a bit much at times, but this all-in approach to creativity has been VanGaalen's M.O. from the start, and his talent remains something to behold.© Timothy Monger /TiVo
