The New Folk Sound Of Terry Callier

Terry Callier

Folk/Americana - Released January 1, 1964 | Craft Recordings

Hi-Res Distinctions 4F de Télérama
The New Folk Sound of Terry Callier was not released until 1968, about three years after the project was originally completed; while the long delay almost certainly crippled the momentum of Callier's fledgling career, the impact on the music itself was at most minimal -- while not the singer's best album, it's his most timeless and inviting, adhering closely to the folk stylings addressed by the title while largely ignoring the mystical jazz dimensions which texture his later material. Surprisingly, none of the album's eight songs are originals, relying instead on traditional tunes like "900 Miles" and "Cotton Eyed Joe"; while Callier's spiralling acoustic guitar lines and the use of two bassists (Terbour Attenborough and John Tweedle) reflect his admiration of John Coltrane, New Folk Sound is for the most part stark and simple, possessed of a subtle grace which spotlights his remarkably moving vocals to excellent effect -- it's a debut which holds all the promise fulfilled by his classic recordings for Cadet.© Jason Ankeny /TiVo

Sound Of A Woman

Kiesza

Electronic - Released October 21, 2014 | 4th & Broadway - Island

Booklet
On her full-length debut Sound of a Woman, Kiesza capitalizes on the success of her '90s dance-reviving hit "Hideaway" and moves beyond it at the same time. Savvily, the album begins with the single that started it all, and what a track it is: a sleek, sexy nod to '90s house, "Hideaway" remains catchy enough to be played on Top 40 radio without compromising any of its danceability. One of 2014's finest dance-pop tracks, "Hideaway" may still be Sound of a Woman's brightest highlight, but the album's other peaks could've been hits for Black Box or CeCe Peniston back in the day. On tracks like "No Enemiesz," "Giant in My Heart," "Over Myself," and "The Love," Kiesza and producers Rami Samir Afuni and Simen & Epsen revitalize the stark beats, pulsing keyboards, and soaring vocals that defined '90s dance with zero irony and lots of energy. The Hideaway EP already suggested that Kiesza was broadening her horizons, a brave move for a new artist so closely associated with a particular sound. Then again, she began her career singing folky material, so she's already proven she's unafraid of change. She gives her '90s fondness a hip-hop bent with "Losin' My Mind," a low-slung track featuring Mick Jenkins and a gritty beat, and "Bad Thing," a collaboration with rapper Joey Bada$$. Elsewhere, she tackles ballads like the title track and the delicate cover of Haddaway's booming hit "What Is Love?" At its best, Sound of a Woman is a potent reminder of how much fun this sound was -- and is.© Heather Phares /TiVo

Celtic Garden: A Celtic Tribute To The Music Of Sarah Brightman, Enya, Celtic Woman, Secret Garden And More

David Arkenstone

World - Released January 1, 2013 | Green Hill Productions

California's David Arkenstone mixes cinematic and rock elements into his new age sonic tapestries, many of which have a distinct Celtic feel and edge, as does this set, which pays tribute to the Celtic-tinged music of Sarah Brightman, Enya, and Secret Garden. Fans of Arkenstone's earlier releases -- Celtic Sanctuary (2007), Spirit of Ireland (2007), Be Thou My Vision (2008), Celtic Romance (2008), and Celtic Chillout (2010) -- will undoubtedly be pleased with this outing as well.© Steve Leggett /TiVo

Living in a Magazine

Zoot Woman

Electronic - Released May 28, 2001 | Wall of Sound

Operating in a vein similar to that of Phoenix's United, Living in a Magazine is a delightful, endearing slice of retro synth pop from Zoot Woman. Where Phoenix sometimes feels a bit like progressive rockers Steely Dan, Zoot Woman seeks inspiration in the Human League, New Order, and Kraftwerk. Les Rhythmes Digitales' Stuart Price clearly plays a key role in the band, but he reins in his funky electronic musings, allowing the album to take on a subtle, jazzy feel as it honors the sound of 1980s synth pop. Zoot Woman exercises more restraint here than many of the band's retro peers. Where a group like Ladytron hammers home its analog sound as if with sledgehammers, Zoot Woman uses a soft mallet of sonic curve balls, echoing its influences but sounding refreshingly modern. The lyrics are light and often quite humorous. "Jessie, please don't go," feels like an answer to Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl." "Chicago, Detroit, L.A." effortlessly mixes stuttered samples, trip-hop vibes, and electro energy. "It's Automatic," "Information First," and "You and I" sound so similar to Phoenix that one wonders if Zoot Woman is a Phoenix tribute band. "The Model" is a nice take on one of Kraftwerk's best songs; it's catchy and quite danceable. Living in a Magazine has enough tempo changes and mood swings to hold one's interest and, even though it feels like a lesser cousin to United, it's a link to the past that's worthy of exploration.© Tim DiGravina /TiVo
