Immunity

Clairo

Alternative & Indie - Released August 2, 2019 | FADER Label

Hi-Res
Clairo's five or so years as a rising, teenaged Bandcamp self-releaser turned social media star included viral songs such as "Pretty Girl" and "Flaming Hot Cheetos" as well as collaborations with fellow bedroom pop phenoms Cuco and Jakob Ogawa. On her full-length major-label debut, Immunity, she maintains a feel largely defined by soft vocals and woozy atmosphere and officially leaves the bedroom behind. Co-produced by Vampire Weekend alum Rostam, the album's velvety textures sound constructed rather than preprogrammed, and guest Danielle Haim plays live drums on several tracks. The record's closer even features a children's chorus. It remains a distinctly intimate affair, however, as established on opener "Alewife." Ethereal, choral-like synths and a sentimental piano chord progression set the tone before a pit-a-pat drum rhythm accompanies Clairo as she recounts a night in her early teens when a friend stopped her from attempting suicide. A song concerned with gratitude more than brooding, its pillow-soft vocal delivery translates to tracks throughout the album, even the alt-'90s-inspired "Bags" and low-key dance-rock of "Sofia." On the latter song, she ventures into melisma, while the spacious ballad "Closer to You" experiments with the Auto-Tune and muffled drums of slow-jam territory. Acknowledging these stylistic variances and subtle production touches, Immunity is nothing if not consistent in providing Clairo's confessional lyrics and seemingly thematically detached vocals with a cushiony-soft landing. What she loses here in charm, she makes up for in lyrical depth and an enveloping sense of comfort.© Marcy Donelson /TiVo

Forever Young

Jacob Young

Jazz - Released May 16, 2014 | ECM

Hi-Res Booklet
On his third date as a leader for ECM, Norwegian guitarist Jacob Young debuts an entirely new international quintet. His sidemen are saxophonist Trygve Seim, and pianist Marcin Wasilewski's trio featuring bassist Slamowir Kurkiewicz and drummer Michael Miskiewicz. Forever Young is more "song" oriented than either of his preceding albums. It's warm, spacious, rhythmically fluid, and deeply lyrical as evidenced by "Bounce," which moves along like a latter-era Roxy Music tune. But that melodicism isn't all pop-inflected. Opener "I Lost My Heart to You," introduced by the pianist, opens tentatively and tenderly and unfolds like a Brazilian folk song. Seim's articulation of the melody reveals its emotional resonance. Young plays a nylon-string guitar. His solo is free of angles; it offers tasteful arpeggios, accenting the changes as he plays into them. "Therese's Gate" is also touched by Brazil, but more by bossa, though its rhythmic signature is more elliptical. The interplay between Wasilewski, Young, and Seim is elegant, and full of ideas. "Sophia's Dance" features a wrangling acoustic guitar solo and Miskiewicz's rolling tom snare that evoke a tabla. The fat, electric guitar chords in "1970" recall early Wes Montgomery, but Young and Wasilewski unpack it into something more modern, sleek, and global with hints of Indian and Latin jazz. "Beauty" has an open country feel, with shimmering, strummed acoustic chords which frame Wasilewski's middle-register arpeggios in a breezy melody. Seim's insistent solo moves it toward the margins as Kurkiewicz's surging bassline urges him on. "Time Changes" is literal -- at least rhythmically -- it also swings through the head and bridge -- even when it engages a classic rock chord progression as one of its themes. Young's playing throughout offers great technical facility, but he is a democratic bandleader, never showy. Forever Young stands out in his catalog because it reveals an almost immeasurable growth in his compositional skills since 2007. These tunes inspire this fine band; they play as if they'd been playing them for ages.© Thom Jurek /TiVo

Purple Hearts

Sofia Carson

Film Soundtracks - Released July 29, 2022 | Hollywood Records

Following chart-topping soundtrack appearances as a cast member of Disney Channel's Descendants franchise, Sofia Carson released her eponymous solo debut in early 2022. July of that year saw the release of the Netflix original movie Purple Hearts, starring Carson as a struggling singer/songwriter who enters into an arranged marriage with a marine (Nicholas Galitzine) that ultimately develops into the real thing. Channeling her exuberant, yearning pop into a set of four original songs, the album's arrangements rely more heavily on guitars than her trademark dance-pop sound. The brief soundtrack is rounded out by two covers plus "stripped" versions of ballad highlight "Come Back Home" and the driving "I Hate the Way." The covers -- a wispy version of Portugal. The Man's "Feel It Still" and a part-rock, part-cheer-team take on "Sweet Caroline" -- are more likely than not to irk fans of either the source material or Carson's previous output. However, the new songs -- which she co-wrote with hitmakers like Justin Tranter (Julia Michaels, Demi Lovato) and Skyler Stonestreet, among others -- are not only worth the price of admission (or subscription) for fans but showcase Carson's potential star power. © Marcy Donelson /TiVo

Sofia Gubaidulina – Dialog: Ich und Du; The Wrath of God; The Light of the End

Vadim Repin

Classical - Released October 22, 2021 | Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

Hi-Res Booklet
This monographic album published by Deutsche Grammophon strikes a chord with this tribute to the composer Sofia Gubaidulina on the occasion of her ninetieth birthday. Three recent works are recorded here, in their world premiere, by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra conducted by Andris Nelsons, who is a great admirer of the intellectual, spiritual and sensual music of the great Russian composer. In 1959, as Shostakovich's assistant, Gubaidulina composed a Chamber Symphony that was much appreciated by the Soviet composer, who encouraged her to continue in this direction. But it was not until the 1980s that her work began to receive international recognition, thanks to interpreters such as Gidon Kremer, the Arditti Quartet and Sir Simon Rattle. In 2018, Sofia Gubaidulina wrote Ich und du ("I and Thou"), her third violin concerto, composed for the virtuoso Vadim Repin in reference to the masterpiece of the same name by the philosopher Martin Buber published in 1923. Both philosophical and theological, this book speaks of Otherness as an essential dimension of all human life. Gubaidulina sets this duality to music in the form of a powerful wordless dialogue between the solo violin and the orchestra.First performed at the Wien Modern Festival in 2020 in a Musikverein left almost deserted by the coronavirus pandemic, The Wrath of God is her most recent work, a piece of telluric power using a large brass, percussion, bell and string ensemble and written in connection with the instrumental interlude of the same name from her oratorio About Love and Hate.Despite its title that sounds like a promise of hope, The Light of the End, composed in 2003, is essentially dramatic. This work plays on Sofia Gubaidoulina's conflicts and inner demons, represented musically by dissonances that struggle to be resolved. Gubaidulina's powerful and expressive music is striking for its message and its originality. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Freier Geist

Sofia Portanet

Punk / New Wave - Released July 3, 2020 | Duchess Box Records

Hi-Res Distinctions Qobuzissime
A few seconds of Freier Geist is all it takes for Sofia Portanet to transport us from 2020 to 1980. Despite being born at the end of 1989 and never having lived through the era, the German singer’s Qobuzissime debut album breathes new life into Neue Deutsche Welle. The ‘80s was a time when Nina Hagen reigned over Europe’s new wave and post-punk with high energy and madness and Kraftwerk was greatly expanding its audience. It was a time characterised by D.A.F.’s marching beats, the romantic ravings of Kate Bush, Toyah and Lene Lovich and the quirky pop of Falco and Rita Mitsouko. All of these artists are dear to Sofia Portanet, who was born in Kiev, grew up in Paris and now lives in Berlin. Singing as brilliantly in German as she does in English and French, she also finds inspiration in great voices who mixed film, theatre and cabaret, such as Ingrid Caven and Hildegard Knef. To summarise, without all of these references, the enchanting Freier Geist finds the perfect balance between longing for the ‘80s (even if you didn’t live through them) and glints of modernity. But above all, it’s the power of Sofia Portanet’s music that makes it so intoxicating. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Radio Mediteran

Omer Klein

Jazz - Released February 8, 2019 | WM Germany

Hi-Res Booklet
With his knack for composing unique narratives and his flawless harmonic precision, Omer Klein really comes into his own in trios. His jazz is usually intertwined with traditional folk music, as is often the case for Israeli jazz musicians. The Germany-based pianist slides from melancholic sounds towards swinging grooves. This former student of Danilo Perez and John Zorn signs here a kind of love letter to the Mediterranean with the aptly named Radio Mediteran. With the help of his faithful rhythmic section composed of Haggai Cohen Milo on double bass and Amir Bresler on drums, he submerges his compositions in sounds from Tunisia, Bulgaria, Turkey, the Middle East, Libya, Morocco and other Mediterranean countries. “My band and I have a very personal connection to the Mediterranean Sea, as we all grew up close to it. After a concert, Haggai, Amir and I often listen to music together in the hotel. During our “Sleepwalkers” tour I noticed that most of the music we were playing to each other was from North Africa, the Balkans or the Arab world. This realisation was the starting point for Radio Mediteran. ”Straying off the beaten track, Radio Mediteran is no folkloric album. “I didn't want to copy the music. Instead we tried to absorb it and give it a new, personal context in order to ultimately perhaps even create a new genre.” These three men have an extraordinary ability to demonstrate that there are more things that connect us than divide us. “This is my political message,” insists Omer Klein. “Our history shows that different cultures in the Mediterranean have positively influenced and enriched each other.” His trio even adds a pop element to his music with some analogue synthesizers and percussion. This generation of jazz musicians are constantly breaking down borders without ever totally cutting ties from their roots. With that philosophy in the back of his mind, Klein’s album proves a real success. © Max Dembo/Qobuz

International Anthem @ Public Records (Volume 1)

Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer

Ambient - Released July 13, 2022 | International Anthem Recording Co.

Hi-Res
On March 19, 2022, Alabaster DePlume and Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer inaugurated International Anthem's quarterly residency at Public Records in Brooklyn with a double bill of beautiful, communal music for a sold-out crowd. Chiu & Honer opened with an expert live performance of their synth/string duo suite Recordings from the Åland Islands. DePlume closed the affair, fronting a large ensemble of musicians that were curated for him by fellow label artist Jaimie Branch. It was DePlume's first time meeting and playing with every member of his band—which included Tcheser Holmes on drums, Hilliard Greene on bass, Leila Bordreuil on cello, Emanuel Ayvas on guitar, Chris Williams on trumpet, Tomin on bass clarinet, and Miriam Parker on dance—as they collectively interpreted works from his then recently-announced, now critically-acclaimed album GOLD. © International Anthem
