In Colour

Jamie xx

Electronic - Released July 1, 2015 | Young

Hi-Res
In 2015, Jamie xx had reached the peak of his career. His band The xx had become a touchstone for lovers of hybrid pop, and he had won success with his most prestigious project, the remix of Gil Scott Heron's final album, We're New here. That's not to say that his first (and in 2020, still the only) solo album was expected. And the English musician brilliantly met expectations by delivering one of the best albums of the year. In Colour, in addition to summing up the Zeitgeist of 2015, was also an authentically British record, with the broth of cultures that overflow on every track, from the opener, Gosh, which samples both the vocals of MC Strings on an old jungle track from 1995 and the drums of Lyn Collins' Think (About It), for an undefinable but formidable track, as well as the awesome Sleep Sound, somewhere between Burial and Four Tet, with little bits of Alicia Keys thrown in. Another great moment of the album: the hit I Know there's Gonna Be (Good Times), which highlights American rapper Young Thug and Jamaican star Popcaan, which would go on to record many international features after this success. And a perfect ending, with Girl, which borrows from Arthur Baker (the chorus "I want your love" from Freeez's super-80s hit I. O. U.), The Beach Boys and Erlend Øye's band, The Whitest Boy Alive. Seesaw

Beth Hart

Blues - Released May 17, 2013 | J&R Adventures

Singer/songwriter Beth Hart continues to explore her blues and soul roots via 11 cover versions of her favorite tracks on Seesaw, her second album with blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa. Following the same path as their first collaboration, the 2011 all-covers release Don't Explain, the pair hooked up again with producer Kevin Shirley, who has previously worked with Led Zeppelin, Journey, Black Crowes, Joe Bonamassa, and numerous others. The 11 tunes kick off with a jump blues rendition of "Them There Eyes," a rock blues take on Ike & Tina Turner's "Nutbush City Limits"; punchy horns accentuate the Buddy Miles penned "Miss Lady," and they give a straightforward soul treatment to the Don Covay/Steve Cropper tune "See Saw" recorded by Aretha Franklin in 1968. The influence of Janis Joplin and Etta James is evident on the powerful ballads "If I Tell You I Love You" and "A Sunday Kind of Love." The album closes with an eerie version of the anti-lynching poem from 1937 associated with Billie Holiday, "Strange Fruit." Also returning from the Don't Explain album are Bonamassa's assembled backing band: Anton Fig (drums and percussion), Blondie Chaplin (guitar), Carmine Rojas (bass), Arlan Schierbaum (keyboards), Lenny Castro (percussion), and Michael Rhodes (bass on "I'll Love You More Than You'll Ever Know").© Al Campbell /TiVo

Turning Point

Dr. Lonnie Smith

Jazz - Released January 3, 1969 | Blue Note Records

Most Blue Note soul-jazz albums from the late '60s went one of three ways: it either was a straight-ahead commercial session, a slightly psychedelic outing, or a funky workout with a vague "Black Power" theme. Dr. Lonnie Smith had followed the latter path with Think!, the predecessor to Turning Point, and there are still remnants of that style on this session, particularly in the opening cover of Don Covay's "See Saw." Nevertheless, Turning Point is a more adventurous affair than Think!, finding Smith -- as well as trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Julian Priester, guitarist Melvin Sparks, tenor saxophonist Bennie Maupin and drummer Leo Morris -- exploring territory that isn't quite free, but is certainly more "out there" than the average soul-jazz session. In particular, Smith's originals "Slow High" and "Turning Point" reach the outer edges of the style, playing with dissonance, complex melodies and expansive sound structures. Despite all these free flourishes, Turning Point remains a soul-jazz record and it has all the trappings of its era -- the take on "Eleanor Rigby" finds the group approximating psychedelia. While the more adventurous elements of Turning Point make for an intriguing listen, the album isn't quite as enjoyable as the harder grooving sessions or the spacier soul-jazz records from the same era. Nevertheless, it's a worthwhile listen.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Ninth

Peter Murphy

Alternative & Indie - Released June 7, 2011 | Nettwerk Music Group

While the lesser Peter Murphy solo albums are burdened by too much dark mysticism and foggy, tension-free music, Ninth sounds alive, or at least, undead as his fans, dubbed “gothlings,” may prefer. These tracks were road-tested on tour before Murphy entered the studio, and this is palpable as songs build and peak, delivering all the drama that made the man’s work with Bauhaus so gripping. Granted there’s no “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” here, but “I Spit Roses” gives “Cuts You Up” a run for its money, while the closing “Crème de la Crème” is a new high point for Murphy the singer as he delivers a complicated, almost-Broadway-styled number with equal heart and skill. Check “Secret Silk Society” for that classic Bauhaus sense of dread and drag, or check “Memory Go” for Murphy’s forward-thinking style of goth, which combines a post-punk throb -- think the Cure’s “A Forest” -- with full-bodied, guitar-crunching breakdowns that come straight out of stoner rock. It’s all put together in a right-sized package, too, with no filler to speak of, then wrapped in warm production from David Baron, who finds the proper balance of shadows and light. “The Godfather of Goth” sounds like the genre’s savior here, coming on strong with those Bowie-sized aspirations and nailing that attractive Nosferatu-meets-Art-School style.© David Jeffries /TiVo
