Schumann: Kinderszenen, Op. 15; Faschingsschwank aus Wien, Op. 26; Arabeske in C Major, Op. 18

Stanislav Bunin

Classical - Released January 1, 1989 | Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

Stanislav Bunin won the 1985 Chopin Competition in Warsaw and went on to establish a reputation as a Chopin specialist. His is a less familiar name in the West as of the early 2020s, although he has spent much time in Japan and has a stronger presence there. This recording was made in 1989 and reissued digitally by Deutsche Grammophon in 2023. One can see why it appealed to those going through the archives; it has the kind of distinctiveness for which competition pianists strive. Here, Bunin offers a Chopin specialist's Schumann, and his readings in the famed Kinderszenen, Op. 15, are distinctive indeed, easily enough to justify a new catalog entry in this much-recorded work. Bunin inserts all kinds of tempo rubato and even wholesale non-notated changes in the tempo, and he often runs counter to long-established readings of these little pieces. The usual artless quality is not to be found. What he comes up with may not have been what was had in mind by Schumann, who told Clara Schumann to forget that she was a virtuosa when playing them. It is also, quite often, arresting. Sample the generally innocent Kind im Einschlummern for a taste; this child is perhaps not going to sleep but is troubled by uneasy dreams. Bunin's tempos are on the slow side, and this is to the good; he allows himself room to define his unorthodox ideas. In the Faschingsschwank aus Wien, Op. 26, and Arabeske in C major, Op. 18, he is equally free, but the effect is less striking in these more public works. Listener reactions to this reissue will necessarily be personal, but one is glad that it has seen the light of day.© James Manheim /TiVo

Anna Zassimova

Hi-Res Booklet
Anna Zassimova invites us to a “virtual concert” in this two-part recital, programmed with her customary flair and originality. We are taken on a journey that follows that most Romantic trajectory - from darkness into light. From Brahms’ and Schumann’s turbulent passions to the latter’s scintillating portrait of Vienna, the artistic jewel of nineteenth-century Europe, she renders the images and emotions of the Romantic imagination in a palette of the most vivid colours. Anna Zassimova is internationally renowned for her many award-winning recordings and performances of the Romantic repertoire and of forgotten masterworks of the Russian repertoire. This is her second recording on the Melism label, following her acclaimed recital of Dvořák duets with Christophe Sirodeau. © Melism
