ICONIC

David Garrett

Classical - Released November 4, 2022 | Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

Hi-Res Distinctions OPUS Klassik
The titular "Iconic" nature of the program here is twofold. First, stardom-groomed violinist David Garrett pays tribute to violin icons of the past. Primary among them is Fritz Kreisler, who is represented several times on the program, including by the familiar Schön Rosmarin (which is not among the bonus tracks for those who purchase the deluxe physical edition but is an additional bonus track available to streaming listeners). One of the icons, Itzhak Perlman, even makes a personal appearance in a Shostakovich duet, and other guests include tenor Andrea Bocelli and the single-named flutist Cocomi. What Garrett calls the second thread of his program deals not with performers but with music; what he has put together here is an example of the classic program of encores. He has done his job well, arranging a lot of the music for himself and changing up the sentimental tunes that can sink a project like this if too relentless with more unusual fare (Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair) and upbeat numbers like Dinicu's Hora Staccato and a reminder of his earlier virtuoso ways with Paganini's Moto Perpetuo, Op. 11. The end result is an entertaining example of the venerable all-encore genre, marred only by oddly too-close studio sound from Deutsche Grammophon.© James Manheim /TiVo

Charpentier: David et Jonathas, H. 490

Les Pages du Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles

Opera - Released March 1, 2024 | Aparté

Hi-Res Booklet
Marc-Antoine Charpentier's David et Jonathas, setting the action-packed biblical story of Saul, has not often been recorded. William Christie and Les Arts Florissants fired the first shot in the late '90s, and there have been a few other attempts, but the work crosses categories -- not really an oratorio, with a limited role for the chorus, but not an opera in the conventional sense -- and this may have hurt it at the box office. The Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles specializes in music of this period, and Charpentier is certainly right up this outfit's alley. The recording was made at Versailles, but its strength is actually that it reproduces the circumstances of its origin, which occurred elsewhere, at a Jesuit school in Paris. The music was intended to alternate with scenes from a play; here, conductor Olivier Schneebeli opts for declaimed readings from poetry by the 17th century writer Antoine Godeau. The work was written for young singers, not only in the children's choir but also a child in the lead role of Jonathas, and Natacha Boucher has a great deal of flair here, certainly sounding like a future star. All the singers are either children or male adults. The music is continuous, and Charpentier's writing sometimes falls into melody or recitative but is most often somewhere in between, shifting naturally with the text. Some of it is quite vocally spectacular, however; sample "Quelle importune voix vient importune mon repos," Act I, scene 4, with its bass line descending to Russian-liturgical depths. Although the opera has five acts and a prologue, it goes by quickly; no doubt with the original use in mind, Charpentier's concept is compact. What is most attractive about the work is how opposite it is to the splendor and formality of Lully; the role of the chorus is limited, and the focus is squarely on the characters. Baroque opera lovers will find something new and intriguing here.© James Manheim /TiVo

Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake

Mariinsky Orchestra

Classical - Released October 15, 2007 | Decca Music Group Ltd.

Anyone who has been searching for a powerful rendition of Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, Op. 20, should consider this dynamic performance by Valery Gergiev and the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre, undoubtedly one of the most forceful available, and perhaps one of the very best, notwithstanding one idiosyncrasy that must be directly addressed. Although Gergiev's periodic humming, muttering, and heavy breathing are quite detectable and may be distracting (the likelihood of that increases as the volume is raised), it is perhaps tolerable, especially in light of the excellence of the interpretation, the sheer excitement of the playing, and the responsiveness of the recording that, in addition to picking up the conductor's vocalizations, puts the listener right in the orchestra pit. Everything musical about this 2007 Decca release is compelling, not only because Gergiev delivers the Mariinsky performing version of the ballet with bold strokes of color, thrillingly brisk tempos, and quite a few original expressive touches, but also because the orchestra is in top form throughout, playing without a single lapse of energy, sensitivity, or brilliance. Listeners will note with pleasure the vibrant string tone, particularly in the contrabasses, which is often encountered in Gergiev's other recordings, and the sharp details in the woodwinds and brass, which are always gratifying to hear since they are often over-blended in older performances. This is a strong and convincing performance, which, along with its DVD release, will be discussed by balletomanes for years, so it is definitely worth checking out.© TiVo

Stravinsky: Le Sacre du printemps - Eötvös: "Alhambra" Concerto

Pablo Heras-Casado

Classical - Released April 9, 2021 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet
More than a century after the historic scandal of its premiere at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, The Rite of Spring has established itself as one of the "musts" of the modern orchestral repertory. And if the source of the telluric forces generated by Stravinsky lay in pagan Russia, it is beneath the arabesques of the palaces of Andalusia that Péter Eötvös found the inspiration for his third violin concerto, entitled Alhambra. The work’s dedicatees, Isabelle Faust and Pablo Heras-Casado, here present its very first recording. © harmonia mundi
