Für die Jugend... (Pour la jeunesse...)

Denis Pascal

Classical - Released April 23, 2009 | Alpha Classics

Eric le Sage's superlative series of recordings of the piano music of Robert Schumann continues with this unusual but wholly organic set featuring the composer's works for children. In two well-filled discs, le Sage presents all 43 pieces from Album für die Jugend, along with the Twelve Piano Pieces for Little and Big Children, the Nine Characteristic Tone Pieces called Ball-Scenes, and the Six Easy Dance Pieces called Kinderball, the last three works for four hands. Although 60 children's pieces all together might seem like too much of a good thing, the actual performances roll by without causing the slightest dip in interest. The listener cannot expect music with the profundity of the C major Fantasia; these are truly children's pieces with charming melodies, delightful harmonies, infectious rhythms, and, above all, easy accessibility. But within the context of what they set out to do -- make music appealing for children -- these pieces are hard to beat. Le Sage's performances could hardly be bettered; the pianist turns in readings as beautifully executed as his earlier recordings of Schumann's more technically challenging masterpieces. Pairing with Denis Pascal or Frank Braley, le Sage delivers enchanting accounts of the four-hand piano pieces. Captured in Alpha Productions' standard clear, deep, and atmospheric sound, this two-disc set should be heard by anyone following this series or anyone interested in either the composer or in piano music for children.© TiVo

Licht in der Nacht

Classical - Released October 21, 2022 | Fuga Libera

"What could be more fascinating than the play of light and shadow? To descend into sensual melancholy, to dare to be fragile and to reveal oneself in its depths and inner nuances. I find that one way of illustrating this complexity of the senses is to compare two musical and pictorial schools: French Impressionism and German Expressionism. The colours and timbres employed by these two schools have long fascinated me just as much as the extreme refinement and detail of the paintings and compositions themselves. Each painter and composer explored the depths of the human soul in his or her own manner. This programme of works composed between 1899-1914 that laid the foundations for modern music is intended as a bridge between Expressionism and Impressionism. This parallel does not claim to illustrate their differences but rather to highlight their common points, to reveal the voluptuous and almost decadent sensuality of these two currents as well as their geographical and stylistic contrasts" (Coline Dutilleul) © Fuga Libera

Caravane

French heartthrob Raphael (that's Raphael Haroche, not to be confused with the veteran Spanish singer Rafael Martos, who goes by the same name) continues to soften his sound on his third album, Caravane. A longtime admirer of David Bowie, he's brought in two of Bowie's former sidemen, pianist Mike Garson, who plays piano on "La Route de Nuit," and guitarist Carlos Alomar, who plays throughout. Those musicians played with Bowie in the mid- and late '70s, but Raphael's musical approach here is somewhat closer to the early-'70s Bowie of Hunky Dory (though the album's concluding instrumental, "Funambule," is a child of Bowie's 1977 anthem "'Heroes'"). He is somewhat less theatrical than his mentor, but also likes to mix his voice way upfront. Since his lyrics are simple and sentimental (though effectively put across by his expressive tenor), he is easily understood whether he's singing about good times ("C'est Bon Aujourd'Hui") or eulogizing an actor who died young ("Chanson pour Patrick Dewaere"). Even English speakers with a little French (or high school students studying the language) are likely to have little trouble getting the gist of his messages, and even those who don't will appreciate the melodic pop/rock sound © William Ruhlmann /TiVo
