Schubert: Chamber Works

Christian Tetzlaff

Chamber Music - Released February 3, 2023 | Ondine

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or - Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik - OPUS Klassik
There is an abundance of recordings of Schubert's two piano trios and of most of the other chamber pieces on this double album; one of them is even by the trio of players heard here, violinist Christian Tetzlaff, cellist Tanja Tetzlaff, and pianist Lars Vogt, but this one was made in the last year and a half of Vogt's life. He had not yet been diagnosed with the cancer that killed him in 2022, but he spoke of this as potentially one of his last recordings. Vogt seemed to be rushing to record as much as he could before his death, sometimes disregarding the advice of his doctors, and several of his last releases were very strong. This one is extraordinary. The brother-sister team of Christian and Tanja Tetzlaff are formidable chamber players, but here, they apply their skills to staying out of Vogt's way; he seems to direct the performances. They land somewhere between ecstatic and tragic. Sample the slow movement of the Piano Trio in E flat major, D. 929, which is something of a funeral march to begin with. Vogt's melody shines with transcendence. His lines in the Piano Trio in B flat major, D. 898, are soaring, shaped into a kind of momentum perhaps never before heard in this well-worn piece. There are several shorter pieces that are beautifully done, including a take on the comparatively rarer Arpeggione Sonata in A minor, D. 821, from Tanja Tetzlaff and Vogt. The main attraction is the pair of piano trios, and it is a bit sobering to ponder whether one must be staring death in the face to play like this.© James Manheim /TiVo

Schubert: Fantasie for Violin and Piano, D. 934, Violin Sonata, D. 574 "Grand Duo" & Rondo, D. 895 "Rondeau brillant"

Renaud Capuçon

Classical - Released January 1, 1999 | Warner Classics

Listeners looking for a single disc of Schubert's better known works for violin and piano not including the sonatas and sonatinas played by French musicians couldn't do better than this disc. Of course, that set of criteria does narrow things down considerably. Many listeners don't know Schubert's works for violin and piano like they know Beethoven's or Brahms' works for violin and piano and those who do may be less likely to be drawn by the lighter Rondo brilliant than by the weightier A minor sonata. Similarly, many listeners who might be drawn by a collection of Schubert's works for violin and piano may initially be more attracted to performances by Austrian or German players than by two French players. And the reason for that, of course, becomes clear in listening to this recording. Violinist Renaud Capuçon and pianist Jérôme Ducros are fine players with strong techniques, attractive tones, and an affectionate way with a phrase, but their interpretations are quite French: their colors are lovely, their surfaces are beautiful, and their aesthetic sympathies are not entirely as one with the echt Viennese music. Their slow movements sing but with a French accent. Their fast movements dance but with a French beat. Their development sections think but with French thoughts. This doesn't mean that Capuçon and Ducros' recording is not well worth hearing -- anyone who knows and loves the works will surely find things to admire about their performances -- but it does mean that listeners looking for a single disc of Schubert's better known works for violin and piano not including the sonatas may wish to check out a German or Austrian recording first. Virgin's 1998 digital sound is clear and full if not perhaps deep enough.© TiVo

Something Almost Being Said: Music Of Bach And Schubert

Simone Dinnerstein

Classical - Released January 27, 2012 | Sony Classical

Booklet
"The trees are coming into leaf/Like something almost being said." Taking a cue from these lines of Philip Larkin, pianist Simone Dinnerstein casts her album of the music of J.S. Bach and Franz Schubert in poetic terms. Her understanding of the composers is summed up in her own words: "The music of Bach and Schubert share a distinctive quality, as if wordless voices were singing textless melodies." Of course, Bach and Schubert were masters of setting texts to profoundly expressive music, so it is fruitful to look for the lyrical impulse in their keyboard works and appropriate to find songful interpretations. Yet Dinnerstein doesn't merely serve up rhapsodic renditions or treat the music as some kind of tuneful vehicle for idiosyncratic or personal reveries. Her playing is quite in character for both composers, and her treatment of the material is far from self-indulgent. Indeed, counterpoint and harmony are carefully balanced against the upper lines, and Dinnerstein is completely in control of the inner parts in Bach's partitas and the rhythmic subtleties of Schubert impromptus. Dinnerstein's playing is well-rounded and skillful, and the care she lavishes on the smallest details of execution may well remind listeners of Glenn Gould (without his attendant eccentricities) or Angela Hewitt. To find the poetry in this 2012 album from Sony, listeners may make their own connections, but Dinnerstein certainly opens up the music for aesthetic appreciation and deep reflection.© TiVo
