Théodore Gouvy (Portraits I) : Œuvres symphoniques...

Christian Arming

Classical - Released January 27, 2014 | Bru Zane

Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason
The time has finally come for the Lorraine composer Théodore Gouvy, even if he still remains largely unknown to the public at large. Nicknamed "The French Mendelssohn" by musicologist Alexandre Dratwicki, the artistic director of the Bru Zane Foundation behind this release, Gouvy is the typical romantic musician at the crossroads of France and Germany, rocked by the vagaries of European history. Released in 2013, this album is an excellent introduction to the music of Théodore Gouvy with symphonic, vocal and chamber music pieces. Influenced by Ambroise Thomas and Camille Saint-Saëns, the composer from Moselle unfolds a wealth of beauty through these pages which owe much to Mendelssohn's melodic sense as well as to Schumann's dramatism. A European at heart, Gouvy lived in Berlin, Paris and Italy, where he befriended Rossini, whom he later met in Paris. Deeply wounded in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, he turned increasingly to religious music, which opened new horizons for him. His dual culture is noticeable throughout all the recordings offered here. His scientific approach to timbre and melodic sensitivity allow him to create a particularly successful synthesis of the different styles of his time. It is an exciting route that we follow here, from his very detached and dapper Sinfonietta to his Fifth Quartet in C minor. High-class performances. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Debussy & Ravel: String Quartets

Jerusalem Quartet

Classical - Released April 20, 2018 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet
The French label harmonia mundi has pulled out all the stops for the 2018 commemoration of the centenary of the death of Claude Debussy, by asking their "house" artists to record the works of the great French composer. Cultural ambassadors for Israel (not always an easy job), the Jerusalem Quartet was created in 1996 and quickly became known as one of the foremost ensembles of the genre, thanks to the power of their playing, the warmth of their performances, and a particularly dense and sensual instrumental colour. Their recordings – thirteen albums for the harmonia mundi label – regularly win awards and critical acclaim in the press. This new recording of the quartets by Debussy and Ravel (a now-classic pairing which seems to have decreed that the two bodies of work will be joined at the hip, even though their authors neither wanted nor observed such a kinship) clearly towers above an already-ample discography. Velvety sounds, dreamy poetry (a marvellous Andantino from Debussy's Quartet), unbridled wildness and youthful energy are all brought into this subtly-treated party, where flowery sentiments mingle as in a novel by Marcel Proust. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Rameau & Couperin: Pièces pour clavier

Clément Lefebvre

Classical - Released May 18, 2018 | Evidence (LTR)

Hi-Res Booklet
For his first record, the young French pianist Clément Lefebvre has selected Couperin and Rameau, whom he presents here in the very original form of an expressive journey through a single day, from morning to night. On the way, Lefebvre moves from one composer to another and playing on their suggestive titles, he underlines what unites and divides them with a subtle intelligence. Clément Lefebvre showed a keen interest in music from a young age. He started playing piano at the age of four, before discovering percussion. After studies and winning prizes in these two instruments at the Conservatoire de Lille, he decided to concentrate fully on the piano. Hortense Cartier-Bresson taught him at the Conservatoire de Boulogne-Billancourt and prepared him for the entrance competition for the Conservatoire de Paris (CNSMD). Clément Lefebvre entered the prestigious institution in 2010 and learned with Roger Muraro, Isabelle Dubuis, Claire Désert, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, and Alain Planès. He also received masterclasses from Philippe Bianconi, Xu Zhong, Michael Lewin, Christian Ivaldi, Emmanuel Strosser as well as from members of the Wanderer Trio. Clément Lefebvre won the First Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2016 James Mottram international piano competition in Manchester. A soloist, he also enjoys chamber music, whether with the Alban Berg Piano Quartet which he founded with a few friends, or as part of a duet with pianist Alexandre Leroy. © François Hudry/Qobuz
