Après un rêve (Belle Époque: Nights at the Piano)

Emmanuel Despax

Classical - Released June 16, 2023 | Signum Records

Hi-Res
It is hard to figure out what pianist Emmanuel Despax had in mind for the concept of this album. Its various titles offer three ideas: Après un rêve comes from the title of a Fauré song Despax transcribes for his program opener, plus there is "Belle Époque: Nights at the Piano." None of these is of much use; few pieces other than the Fauré are particularly dreamy, and the largest piece, Poulenc's Soirées de Nazelles, is from the nervous 1930s and nowhere near the Belle Époque in time or mood. As for "Nights at the Piano," that fits the Poulenc nicely but not the concluding Gaspard de la Nuit of Ravel, which is an imposing virtuoso concert work carrying none of the connotations of "Nights at the Piano." Really, Despax excels in none of these three ways but rather in a fourth: he hits on an intriguing mix of familiar standards and unusual works. Among the latter group are the Soirées de Nazelles, which Poulenc disclaimed and, perhaps for that reason, have been seldom heard. They are delightful pieces that bear titles describing qualities, like the numbers of a Baroque French suite, but actually seem to have been devised by Poulenc to describe members of a group of his friends, like Elgar's Enigma Variations. The result is a work that distills the hint of improvisation that pervades some of Poulenc's keyboard music and songs, and Despax gives it the right lively, spontaneous feel. The Nocturne, Op. 165, of Cécile Chaminade and the keyboard version of Henri Duparc's Aux étoiles are also nice finds. As for the more heavily trodden works, Debussy's Clair de lune is pleasantly moody, although no one would select this album for the rote Gaspard de la Nuit or the rather un-macabre Danse Macabre, Op. 40, of Saint-Saëns. For Poulenc lovers, however, this is an important find. © James Manheim /TiVo

Samedi Soir à Beyrouth (Saturday Night in Beirut) is a return to form for the great restless song poet Bernard Lavilliers. The musical journey is steeped in reggae, ska, dub, soul, and funk with wonderful arrangements by the great Willie Mitchell of Memphis soul imprint Hi Records -- though the set is actually produced by longtime associate Sylvain Taillet. "Solitaire," "Ma Belle," the title track, and the hit bonus duet "Balèze" (with Tryo) are all standouts from a set that shows Lavilliers in strong voice and inspiration.© Thom Jurek /TiVo

In seculum viellatoris: The Medieval Vielle

Le Miroir de Musique

Classical - Released March 9, 2018 | Ricercar

Hi-Res Booklet
Do not confuse the medieval vielle, which is played with a bow, with the vielle à roue, or hurdy-gurdy, whose strings are plucked by a wheel which is turned with a crank. The vielle is one of the older instruments, and it is typical of the Middle Ages. Larger models are similar in size to the modern viola, and it is related to a smaller instrument which would generally become known as a rebec at the end of the 14th century. The broad and generic meaning of the word vielle (or viola, in Occitan) was drawn out by the arrival of more specific terms like gigue (from the German-speaking world), rebebe (from the Arabic rebab) or crwth or rotte (from the Celtic fringe). The vielle is characterised by a flat casing, oval or oblong in shape, sometimes cut fairly low laterally, with a variable number of strings. In other words, there were many different versions of this generic instrument, and on this album we find it in many different shapes, sizes and regional origins. He leaves it to the listener to form their own view of the many different sounds, which vary so widely from each piece to the next; and whose manuscripts vary so widely in terms of their origins: Germany, Italy, Flanders, Occitania, and Celtic regions. The majority of these pieces are anonymous, but we can still identify Perdigon, the Ardechois troubadour from the early 13th century; the Flemish Johannes Ciconia (1370-1412) and the famous Burgundian Guillaume Dufay, who needs no introduction. The Miroir de Musique ensemble, led by Baptiste Romain, specialises in the music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; their members sing and play many different forms of vielle, harp, percussion instruments and the bagpipes! © SM/Qobuz

Debussy: Harmonie du soir, mélodies & songs

Alain Planès

Classical - Released August 24, 2018 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Gramophone Editor's Choice - Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik
This fine album centred on Debussy, entitled, Harmonie du soir (it is now the fashion to give classical releases titles of their own) presents a bouquet of melodies mostly dedicated to the nocturnes of which Debussy was so fond. It has a romantic opening, with the Nocturnes by John Field, and then by Chopin and Fauré. The programme is a delight for the ears , with a certain, rather precious, "je ne sais quoi" alongside the consummate articulation and diction offered by both Sophie Karthäuser and Stéphane Degout, two artists at the dazzling height of their maturity. The evocative, tender, liquid piano of both Alan Planès and Eugène Asti also provides an air of great expansiveness. The melodies emerge very subtly, helped along by performers who possess a deep knowledge of the unique world of French mélodie which Debussy renewed with the novelty of his harmonies and an often-demanding choice of lyrics, from Baudelaire or Mallarmé. This is yet another fantastic contribution from the harmonia mundi team to the year of Debussy. © François Hudry/Qobuz
