Party

Aldous Harding

Alternative & Indie - Released May 19, 2017 | 4AD

Hi-Res Distinctions 4F de Télérama
When John Parish, PJ Harvey's producer, takes the time to sit down behind the console to work on a record, people tend to take notice. To see why, take a look at Party, Aldous Harding's second album, which we might swiftly (or hastily?) categorise as cerebral folk: it is neurasthenic, and spellbinding. Only, behind these reductive labels, the young New Zealander commands a much broader musical spectrum. On the model of the Living The Classics/Party series: on the former track, Harding is gentle and almost evanescent, before mutating on the latter into a baleful imp.  No effects, no instrumental chicanery is needed to win the crowd's ear. Because even if we can see that she knows the classics (Kate Bush, Joan Baez, Linda Perhacs, Joni Mitchell, Vashti Bunyan...), it is the very personal tone of her voice and her songs that makes this second album an impressive moment of intimacy and revelation... © MZ/Qobuz

At Mister Kelly's

Sarah Vaughan

Vocal Jazz - Released February 7, 2023 | Verve

Hi-Res
During the mid-'50s, Sarah Vaughan spent most of her time recording songbook standards backed by a large orchestra in florid arrangements, with only the occasional breath of fresh air like her masterpiece, 1954's Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown. Four years after that milestone, another landed with the live album At Mister Kelly's. Recorded quite early in the days of the live LP, the album captured Vaughan at her best and most relaxed, stretching out on a set of late-night torch songs and ballads. With a trio including Jimmy Jones on piano, Roy Haynes on drums, and Richard Davis on bass, Vaughan is simply captivating, easily disproving the notion that, to be entertaining, singers needed inventive arrangements and multiple voices (instrumental or otherwise) behind them. Her unerring sense of rhythm carries her through every song on this set, whether the occasion calls for playfulness and wit ("Thou Swell," "Honeysuckle Rose") or a world-wise melancholia ("Willow Weep for Me"). Her accompanists are a valuable anchor, with Haynes' drumming just as precise as Sassy's vocals and Jones' piano solos adding additional vitality.© John Bush /TiVo

Wide Open

Little North

Jazz - Released January 27, 2023 | April Records & Music Co.

Hi-Res
Ever since the release of their first album Yonder in 2016, the Danish trio Little North has been viewed as one of the most promising bands in the young Scandinavian jazz scene. Their fame has since ventured past the borders of their native Denmark, as they begin making a name for themselves further afield. Their previous albums have featured a stunning piano/bass/drum trio characterised by the paradoxical combination of lyricism and restraint that’s so typical of Nordic jazz. However, their last album, Familiar Places, released in January 2021, broadened this sound with the addition of trumpeter Kasper Tranberg and guitarist Viktor Spasov.Little North goes back to basics with Wide Open, expertly summarising the essential ingredients of their art. Returning to the trio format and prioritising collective discourse over any individual monologue, this new release reveals a world of rich, original tracks, all developed upon an orchestral backdrop which serves as a canvas for improvisation. The minimalist lyricism of pianist Benjamin Nørholm Jacobsen and the beautiful presence of double bassist Martin Brunbjerg Rasmussen (the full extent of his skill is showcased in ‘Elna’ - a kind of miniature concerto for double bass) are particularly commendable here. Little North’s music is surely worth a listen. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz

Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Rodgers & Hart Song Book

Ella Fitzgerald

Vocal Jazz - Released January 1, 1956 | Verve

Hi-Res
Decades after they were recorded, the eight volumes of the Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Complete American Songbook series became timeless relics in jazz history and of 20 th century music in general. The idea for this immense project was originally proposed by producer Norman Granz, who was the singer’s manager as well as founder of the record label Verve. The first volume, Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Songbook, was published in 1956 and delighted the public and critics alike – so much so that that same year Ella Fitzgerald followed up with this recording, devoted to the songbook by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart this time. As in the previous volume, Buddy Bregman, a gifted protégé of Granz who was just 25 years old at the time, conducted the orchestra and arrangements. The music in this album has a luxurious feel and oozes sensuality but Bregman’s strings never once overpower Ella’s rich and sensual voice. As for the more up-tempo tracks like the famous The Lady is a Tramp, that’s when the singer proves to us why she was crowned the queen of swing. The musicians who played in her August 1956 sessions in Los Angeles were as ever, the crème de la crème of West Coast jazz, including trumpeters Pete Candoli and Maynard Ferguson, saxophonists Bud Shank and Bob Cooper, and guitarist Barney Kessel, to name but a few. Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Rodgers & Hart Songbook was a greater success than her songbook dedicated to Cole Porter due to the sheer popularity of the New-York duo’s songs. Ella continued her project in the years that followed, with albums revisiting the repertoires of Duke Ellington in 1957, Irving Berlin in 1958, George and Ira Gershwin in 1959 Harold Arlen in 1961, Jerome Kern in 1963 and Johnny Mercer in 1964. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

La Francesina, Handel's nightingale

Sophie Junker

Opera - Released May 22, 2020 | Aparté

Hi-Res Booklet
For the French soprano Élisabeth Duparc, known as “La Francesina”, Handel composed no fewer than twelve principal roles in major works – operas and oratorios – written towards the end of his life. She took the title role in Semele, for instance, and the parts of Michal in Saul and Nitocris in Belshazzar. Nothing is known of her life: only Handel's works remain to testify to her talent and aura. They are brought to life here by the brilliant and virtuoso voice of Sophie Junker, accompanied by Franck-Emmanuel Comte's Concert de l'Hostel Dieu: sometimes mischievous ("Myself I shall adore"), sometimes penetrating ("In sweetest harmony they lived"), the soprano resurrects her model and magnificently digs out all the nuances of Handel's genius. Sophie Junker and the Concert de l’Hostel Dieu pay tribute to her here through some of her most successful roles as the composer’s muse. © Aparté

Hey Now Hey (The Other Side Of The Sky)

Aretha Franklin

Soul - Released June 25, 1973 | Rhino Atlantic

Hey Now Hey (The Other Side of the Sky) was just about Franklin's last gasp before succumbing to disco. This odd album, with its cheesy, junky artwork, contains some gems -- notable are a poignant cover of Bernstein's "Somewhere," and a sparkling "Moody's Mood," and the beautiful Carolyn Franklin composition "Angel."© George Bedard /TiVo

SWELL

Alternative & Indie - Released February 9, 1994 | Beggars Banquet

Swell are swell on this third full-length release. They're a moody, eclectic, folky, and esoteric San Francisco foursome, who mine the same vein in every song, utilizing the reedy, calm, vocals, and constantly strummed acoustic of David Freel into mesmerizing results. It's a smooth, quiet ride until a jolting power chord snaps you out of your lull, seemingly out of nowhere. Combine this with soaring, electric slide guitar that offsets the melodies and subtle hooks, as well as Sean Kirkpatrick's creative collage of drum fills and syncopation, rather than straight beats -- a territory Stephen Morris of Joy Division adapted to their rigid sound, mixed with Stewart Copeland's style and hi-hat flourishes. 41 is existential slacker-rock.© Jack Rabid /TiVo
