Christmas in the Spirit of Jazz - A Qobuz Exclusive

Nils Langren

Jazz - Released November 17, 2023 | ACT Music

Hi-Res
Christmas has come early! That’s the spirit German label ACT is evoking with this delightful exclusive compilation. The tracks on the album are extraordinarily varied, from classical jazz (Irving Berlin’s “Snow”, Felix Bernard’s “Winter Wonderland”; Mel Tormé’s “Christmas Song”, Thad Jones’ “A Child is Born”), to traditional songs arranged à la Dixieland (“O Tannenbaum”) or ‘Burt Bacharach style’ (“Es wird scho glei dumpa”). It also takes us on a trip to the more cozy climates of Scandinavian folk jazz (the stunning “Vinter” by singer Janne Mark accompanied by trumpetist Arve Henriksen), and features the Jazzrausch Big Band, singers Viktoria Tolstoy and Jeanette Köhn, pianist Ida Sand, as well as the group Echoes of Spring along with pianist David Helbok. Through this kaleidoscope of moods, masterfully incarnated by a panel of highly diverse voices, including that of Landgren who, along with the trombone, doesn’t hesitate to carry a tune himself, this record is enchanting. A true success. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz

Spirit Of The Boogie

Kool & The Gang

Pop - Released August 1, 1975 | Mercury Records

Discussing Kool & the Gang in the early '70s, James Brown enthused, "They're the second-baddest out there...They make such bad records that you got to be careful when you play a new tape on the way home from the record store. Their groove is so strong you could wreck." And that really says it all. Kool & the Gang were funk's kings in 1975, and Spirit of the Boogie was the finest album they ever recorded -- the staggering climax of their development thus far. The record-buying public thought so too -- the album gave the band their first Top Five R&B hit. Spirit of the Boogie may have been first and foremost a funk masterpiece, but it was also so much more. From the African art on the foldout sleeve to the spiritual and musical purity of many of the songs, this album not only bound the band's reverence for their roots to a blistering, street-smart funk, but also demonstrated a keen awareness of their own role in their musical odyssey. "Ancestral Ceremony" pays homage by quoting from Kool's earlier songs, while "Jungle Jazz" tracks back to the original pounding jams that imbibed 1973's "Jungle Boogie." The title track, meanwhile, is quintessential Kool & the Gang -- fiery funk which is kept in check by rhythm and chant. It gave the band a springtime number one on the R&B charts -- their third. This is a phenomenal set, a superlative album. And because the grooves are so strong, it's easy to forgive weak moments -- most especially the mawkish "Sunshine and Love." Kool & the Gang were outstanding during this period, before they caught the disco bug. Spirit of the Boogie remains a proud achievement.© Amy Hanson /TiVo

Coming Of Age

Ben Williams

Jazz - Released April 6, 2015 | Concord Jazz

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Top du mois de Jazznews
Ben Williams' sophomore full-length album, 2015's Coming of Age, finds the adept bassist/composer delivering another sophisticated mix of post-bop, fusion, and contemporary R&B-infused jazz. The album follows up Williams' equally striking 2011 debut, State of Art, and showcases the winner of the 2009 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition's further development as a bandleader, composer, and improviser. Once again joining Williams is his longtime backing ensemble Sound Effect, featuring tenor and soprano saxophonist Marcus Strickland, guitarist Matthew Stevens, pianist and Fender Rhodes keyboardist Christian Sands, synth and Fender Rhodes keyboardist Masayuki "Big Yuki" Hirano, and drummer John Davis. The album also showcases several guest artists including singer Goapele, who adds her soulfully resonant voice to the midtempo, Afro-pop-infused "Voice of Freedom (For Mandela)." Also spotlighted here is acclaimed New Orleans-born trumpeter Christian Scott, whose muted trumpet lead on Williams' reworked cover of vocalist Lianne La Havas' sultry, introspective ballad "Lost & Found" brings to mind the melancholic sound of Miles Davis. A stylistically wide-ranging musician with roots in gospel, R&B, and pop as well as jazz, Williams has a gift for pulling his many influences together across an album. This is evident throughout Coming of Age, with cuts like the Latin-infused "Forecast" and "Half-Steppin'" bringing to mind bassist Jaco Pastorius and saxophonist Wayne Shorter's work with the '70s fusion outfit Weather Report. Similarly, Williams reinvents Nirvana's classic "Smells Like Teen Spirit" into a robust, virtuosic solo bass performance and even takes to the mike, rapping over a latter-album reprise of his militaristic ballad "Toy Soldiers." Ultimately, with Coming of Age, Williams continues to reveal his growth as one of the most open-minded and gifted millennial jazz artists.© Matt Collar /TiVo

Jazz Is a Spirit

Terri Lyne Carrington

Jazz - Released February 25, 2002 | ACT Music

In the male-dominated jazz genre, this veteran drummer has been happily accepted as one of the guys and has forged a strong touring career (Al Jarreau, David Sanborn) as she has, on her solo projects, pushed the improvisational and conceptual boundaries. This free-spirited recording emerges from the fun of bebop and traditional jazz balladry into the more challenging realm of tribal rhythms and global-mindedness -- a wacky journey to be sure, but true to her heart of wanderlust and her contention that, indeed, jazz can only be defined as a spirit. She opens with a weird, mystical ambience behind Cosby Show kid Malcolm Jamal Warner's spoken-word definition, then jams in a live setting with longtime associates like Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard, and Paul Bollenback (guitar) on tunes that range from the avant-garde ("Little Jump") to the smoky and romantic ("Samsara," a thoughtful tribute to Wayne Shorter). Throwing off the shackles, she does a long tribal drum roll piece and opens the door for a "Journey East From West" with Kevin Eubanks. "Journey of Now" combines the best of all worlds, with Wallace Roney's traditional trumpet, Jeff Richman's fusion guitar edges, and an irrepressible percussive tribalism. The remaining tracks are a balance between measured craziness and gentle tradition, with a bit of advice offered to Terri Lyne Carrington as she plays before the spoken words of Papa Jo Jones on "Mr Jo Jones." Innovative yet sometimes maddening, this is above all else her truest heart.© Jonathan Widran /TiVo
