Cécile McLorin Salvant

Vocal Jazz - Released September 29, 2017 | Mack Avenue Records

Hi-Res Distinctions 4F de Télérama - Indispensable JAZZ NEWS
One album after another, Cecile McLorin Salvant reminds us she’s anything but the stereotypical “jazz singer”. Revealed to the public in 2013 with her gorgeous WomanChild, she stepped it up a gear two years later with For One To Love, an even more masterful and complete record, on which her voice worked wonders. Born on August 28th, 1989 in Miami, Florida, she studied French law, baroque and vocal jazz in Aix-en-Provence before winning the Thelonious Monk International Competition in 2010 (at only 20, in front of a jury composed of Al Jarreau, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Patti Austin, Dianne Reeves and Kurt Elling!). She went on to display impressive qualities as a composer as well with five original songs on her 2015 album. With Dreams And Dagger the French-American, who now lives in Harlem, is releasing a third album recorded live at Village Vanguard, the New York Mecca of jazz, and at the DiMenna Center, supported by her faithful trio (pianist Aaron Diehl, bass player Paul Sikivie and drummer Lawrence Leathers) and some guests on a few tracks, such as Quatuor Catalyst and pianist Sullivan Fortner. A real choice for the artist, who wishes she could only record live albums, the context in which her band’s sound is most faithfully presented. More classic in its form than her two previous works, Dreams And Dagger is proof of her fluency no matter the repertoire. For a classic like My Man’s Gone Now, for which thousands of versions already exist, she embarks with her voice on unique paths, to astounding effect! Furthermore, Cecile McLorin Salvant fully bonds with her trio, which isn’t just a simple stooge for her amazing voice, but an essential part of her musical world. Once again, she blazes an even deeper trail, far from the Billie/Sarah/Ella Holy Trinity, because as Wynton Marsalis put it: “You only get a singer like this once in a generation or two…”. © MD/Qobuz

Les Choristes (Bande originale du film)

Bruno Coulais

Film Soundtracks - Released March 17, 2004 | Peermusic France

Bernard Coulais, who is admired for his scores for Winged Migration and Microcosmos, is again showing his resourcefulness in using instruments that are available to him. The soundtrack for the popular European film Les Choristes combines songs, sung by the boys' choir in the story, and regular soundtrack music to accompany the action of the film. Christophe Barratier, the film's director and a classical guitarist, wrote the main theme of the film, "Cerf-Volant," which is woven into the first track "Les Choristes." But Coulais composed and arranged most of Les Choristes' score. Themes from the songs are woven into underscore tracks, which are written along the lines of scores by Rachel Portman or Danny Elfman, and they demonstrate Coulais' facility with instrumental and vocal color. Affecting melodic material is tied to rhythmic accompaniments, primarily using strings and light woodwinds, with brass and percussion providing reinforcement at times. Other tracks add the choir or harp, piano, or celesta to the mix. The opening "Les Choristes" is similar to Fauré's Pavane, with a soloist singing with the accompaniment of the choir and pizzicato strings. "Action Réaction" is an adagio for strings, beginning in unsettling dissonances and ending in dark unison. Songs written for the film have memorable melodies, easy lyrics and generally easy harmonies, perfect for a chorus of schoolboys (not to mention soundtrack sales). These include a very brief, jolly arrangement of a folk song about a legendary highwayman, "Compere Guilleri." "In Memoriam" tests the boys' part-singing skills with its frequent passing dissonances in its harmonies, which remind you of Mozart's choral writing. The boys are not always pitch perfect or together, but then they shouldn't be, as they are portraying a group of boys just beginning music lessons. Nor do they sound like a crystalline English boys' choir, but the unpolished dimension of their voices blends well with the rich orchestral writing. While there are a few tracks that obviously are film music and do not quite stand up by themselves, the soundtrack as a whole is charming and listenable, with an appeal of its own that should attract more than just fans of the film.© TiVo

Joe Dassin Éternel...

Joe Dassin

French Music - Released August 15, 2005 | Sony Music Media

The late Joe Dassin was a very successful singer in his adopted France, and this collection, released by Sony/BMG France in 2005 contains 23 of his biggest tunes. This particular edition lacks the second disc of material associated with other releases, but still captures this singer's best moments. Includes "Et si Tu n'Existais Pas," "Les Champs-Elysees," and "Le Chemin de Papa."© Chris True /TiVo

Esther Abrami

Classical - Released September 22, 2023 | Sony Classical - Sony Music

Hi-Res Booklet
This release by violinist Esther Abrami seems to fit a common enough pattern, with a photogenic young artist playing melodic, moderate-tempo stuff tailor-made for Britain's Classic FM and its cousins in other countries. It fills its role well, but there are some notable new wrinkles here. The album's "Cinéma" theme is common enough, but not all of the music here consists of movie themes. The most novel thing is the presence of anime music by Toshio Masuda, Go Shiina, and Shigeru Umebayashi. These are not familiar names outside the anime world, but to aficionados of the genre, their music is appreciated, and they will be known by name among the harder core. Abrami integrates them well into the rest of the program; the idiom is slightly different, with more concentrated sentiment, so to speak, but she links pieces tonally and, interestingly, drops in pieces with no connection to cinema to make the whole thing fit together. A guitar-and-violin arrangement of Astor Piazzolla's Libertango marks something of a high point, breaking the sequence of slow numbers. As for the movie themes, they are naturally enough centered in French films but also include figures known beyond France; James Newton Howard's "The Hanging Tree" from The Hunger Games is included. Abrami has a nice cantabile, and she has set herself the task of creating nothing less than a violin crossover album for a new age. She has largely succeeded.© James Manheim /TiVo

Meyerbeer: Robert le Diable

Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine

Classical - Released September 23, 2022 | Bru Zane

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Gramophone: Recording of the Month
For his last season at the helm of the Opéra de Bordeaux, Marc Minkowski—always keen to conduct forgotten works which have, in some way, marked the history of music—sets his sights on Robert le Diable, Giacomo Meyerbeer's opera which was a true social phenomenon in 19th century France. The Palazzetto Bru Zane - Centre de musique romantique française has followed suit by officially publishing this concert version, which also features some excellent vocal soloists. Admired by Balzac, Sand and Dumas, this ‘grand opéra à la française’ (great French opera) faded into obscurity after the First World War. Its creator became a sort of pariah – one met with both condescension and mockery. With its ‘seductive and haunting melodies’ (Alexandre Dratwicki), it’s nevertheless a flamboyant work that greatly inspired his contemporaries, such as Verdi, who referred to it in La Traviata. The extraordinary impact of Robert le Diable was such that it was performed a great many times on every continent. A true one-man band, Marc Minkowski has invested himself entirely in this undertaking, learning this vast score practically by heart and conducting it with his usual power and conviction. The international cast is full of surprises thanks to their deep understanding of the work and the protagonists’ fantastic pronunciation. This new release, to the credit of the Bru Zane label, revitalises our knowledge of this work that’s scarcely mentioned in specialised dictionaries. © François Hudry/Qobuz
