Rossini: Il barbiere di Siviglia

Teresa Berganza

Opera - Released January 1, 1972 | Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions The Qobuz Ideal Discography
This is a Barbiere "di qualità, di qualità": in fact, of very great quality indeed, from Deutsche Grammophon. Recorded in London in the summer of 1971, it is one of the first meetings of Claudio Abbado and the London Symphony Orchestra. It is also the first of Alberto Zedda's philological editions of Rossini's works, whose scores have been covered over by inherited errors for over a century. Getting rid of the additions which have, quite wrongly, become traditional, means restoring certain interruptions and the fine instrumentation of the period; and above all, singing and playing without exaggerations, thanks to an innate sense for the theatre. It's a spot of spring cleaning which has restored the youth of the 24-year-old composer's masterpiece. Bravo, signor barbiere, ma bravo! It is a dream record, with singers who are well-versed in the repertoire. Everyone is right where they need to be, from Teresa Berganza's wiley and cheeky Rosina, to the refined and hard-working Figaro played by Hermann Prey, via Luigi Alva's frivolous Count and the utterly ridiculous Basilio played by the outrageous Paolo Montarsolo. We're amused by their antics, as we admire the well-oiled and unstoppable machine of Rossini's theatre, under the unceasingly inventive and thrilling baton of Claudio Abbado. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Cello 360

Christian-Pierre La Marca

Classical - Released November 27, 2020 | naïve classique

Hi-Res Booklet
This new concept album confirms an already well-established trend, that of a new generation of young classical musicians who feel stifled by their repertoires and want to open the doors to freedom, or to what they see as freedom. In Cello 360, Christian-Pierre La Marca created a work for solo cello without any accompaniment, totally cross-genre, which pays no heed to temporal or stylistic boundaries. It runs from Marin Marais to Dutilleux, from Purcell to Ligeti, from Thierry Escaich to Charlie Chaplin and The Beatles with disarming ease and a technical mastery which lets him give free rein to his artistic expression. Having only one (beautiful) instrument at his disposal, he plays with different bows, which prove so important for the production of sound, attack, power and rhythmic subtlety. He also selects different acoustics and sound recording techniques to match his chosen works.  His album, which doesn't belong in any one realm, defies classification. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Rossini: Figaro? Sì!

Florian Sempey

Classical - Released April 22, 2022 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
The French baritone Florian Sempey has established himself as a key player on today’s operatic scene. For his first solo recital, Rossini was the obvious choice, first of all because he has already performed the title role in Il barbiere di Siviglia in the leading opera houses, from Paris to London, and of course by way of Orange and Pesaro. But there is another reason: "Rossini was the first composer’s name I heard in my life. At my grandparents’ house, there was a bust above the piano, on a little rococo display stand" - the bust that appears on the cover of this album. "Rossini’s music is a challenge for singers and also a great and very strict technical training for them. It calls for the highest standards and degree of precision". This programme presents arias in French and Italian, mingling the most famous (including Figaro’s "Sono il factotum") with rarities such as Germano’s aria from La scala di seta and Don Parmenione’s from L’occasione fa il ladro. It also includes magnificent duets with two dream partners, Karine Deshayes and Nahuel Di Pierro. And who better to conduct the Orchestre de l’Opéra National Bordeaux Aquitaine than the accomplished Rossinian Marc Minkowski, who gives this music an inimitable sparkle? © Alpha Classics

Guéthary

Aurèle Marthan

Classical - Released August 12, 2022 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
Ravel and the Basque Country have always been one and the same. His Concerto in G major is the central work of this album and is presented here in an original arrangement for piano and small ensemble. Pianist Aurèle Marthan also pays homage to his splendid hometown, Guéthary, where he founded the festival "Classic à Guéthary". All of the works recorded here illustrate the richness of a region that has been cherished by so many artists: Stravinsky arranged his Petrouchka in Biarritz, Pablo de Sarasate chose to reside there and Isaac Albéniz opted to spend his last days there. Another Basque celebrity, although on the Spanish side, is Alberto Iglesias, director Pedro Almodóvar’s house composer. The Basque coast is often compared to California because of its excellent beaches for surfing; Aurèle Marthan evokes the Eagles as well as his passion for the American minimalists (Glass) and for cinema, with music from the films Amen and Waltz with Bashir; he also provides a piano version of the Biarritz-based rock band La Femme’s hit Sur la planche. This album covers more than three centuries of music and includes music by Rameau and Couperin — the composer of La Basque ! Guéthary was written especially for this recording by composer David Chalmin, who also produced the recording in his studio in the Basque Country. © Alpha Classics

Pierne: Piano Concerto in C minor, Op. 12 / Ramuntcho Suites Nos. 1 and 2

Jean-Efflam Bavouzet

Classical - Released January 1, 2011 | Chandos

Hi-Res Booklet
A revival of the works of Gabriel Pierné has been spearheaded by a handful of dedicated labels that champion unjustly neglected classics, and Chandos has joined them with this fine recording by Juanjo Mena and the BBC Philharmonic of the Piano Concerto in C minor, the two suites of incidental music from Ramuntcho, and two shorter pieces. Pierné's career extended from the late Romantic era to the early modern, a period spanning roughly 50 years between the belle epoque in France and World War II, so there is a fairly wide range of influences. His early works share features with those of his teachers, César Franck and Jules Massenet, and his later style leans more to his contemporaries, Gabriel Fauré and Claude Debussy; overall, however, his oeuvre is perhaps closest to the music of Camille Saint-Saëns. Whether in the grand form of his Piano Concerto (which was modeled on Saint-Saëns' Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor), the neo-Classical wit of the Divertissements sur un thème pastoral, or in the other picturesque pieces on this album, Pierné's charming melodies, pristine colors, and vivacious rhythms are often arresting and always memorable. Pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet delivers a robust performance of the concerto that is exciting in the fast sections, but luxuriant in more reflective passages, and the orchestra offers a wonderful palette of sonorities in the accompaniment. Chandos' reproduction is excellent, offering vivid sonorities, spacious acoustics, and vibrant presence in all of the selections.© TiVo

Stagioni d'amore: Madrigali by Marini, Rovetta & Valentini

BernVocal

Classical - Released October 8, 2021 | Passacaille

Hi-Res Booklet
From the budding blossoms of first love and the heat of passion, to when feelings subside and fade away, “the seasons of love” are the overarching theme of this programme of madrigali concertati by three notable members of the Venetian school: Biagio Marini, Giovanni Rovetta and Giovanni Valentini. The madrigals on this recording exemplify the new musical aesthetic of affetti and the seasons of nature are mirrored by the stages of love experienced by the lyrical hero. The ever-changing vocal and instrumental forces of up to six singers and seven instrumentalists lend colourful variety to the recording as it progresses from primavera, estate, autunno and inverno through the seasons of love.

Royer: Pièces de clavecin

Angelica Selmo

Classical - Released August 20, 2021 | Stradivarius

Hi-Res Booklet
The first half of the XVIII century witnessed the triumph of the harpsichord. The 1685 generation gave a solid contribution to the development of the proceeding: this was the year when Bach, Händel and Scarlatti were born. A remarkable generation, along with the composers of the French court such as Couperin and, in the following years, Rameau. But, in addition, other minor authors must be mentioned. While most of the anthologies quoted Fisher, Fiocco, Daquin and Balbastre, some of the minor composers have been forgotten for many decades. Nowadays such an incomplete review would not go unnoticed. Therefore, we want to start mentioning an unrevealed personality: Pancrace Royer (1705 - 1755), author of the Premier livre de pièces de clavecin. His name represents an unprecedented success for the fine art of the harpsichord in the first half of the XVIII century. Its mastery, fully equal to the art of Rameau, is still to be entirely recognized and appreciated. The dualism between the two authors, Royer and Rameau, is detectable at several points of their careers. Here we want to mention the Marche des Persans by Rameau, followed by the outstanding La Marche des Scythes. This is the historical background that the present work, interpreted by Angelica Selmo, wants to consolidate. The aim is to bring attention to the compositions of Royer after many years of under evaluation. © Stradivarius
