Acoustic Album No. 8

Katie Melua

Pop - Released November 26, 2021 | BMG Rights Management (UK) Ltd

Hi-Res
Acoustic Album N°8 is an album of acoustic covers of Katie Melua's 2020 album, Album N°8. Moving from a luxurious orchestration to a single instrument is not a problem for the Georgia-born Briton, who is as comfortable with the Georgian Philharmonic Orchestra as she is alone with her guitar. The breadth of the symphony orchestra's strings form a kind of counterpoint to the often intimate and autobiographical character of the songs' lyrics. Here, everything flows: the simple and natural beauty of the acoustic guitar (sometimes enhanced by keyboards played by Mark Edwards) fits perfectly not only with the lyrics, but also with Melua's personality and her incomparably pure voice. The listener will be able to curl up to songs that evoke the end of a love affair (A Love Like That, Airtime) or Katie Melua's father's journey to the Caucasus (Leaving the Mountain). There is also a track co-written with Katie's brother Zurab (Maybe I Dreamt It). This tribute to choreographer Pina Bausch is accompanied here by the sober and sensitive contribution of the violinist Simon Goff. The latter also features in Remind Me To Forget. A pure and peaceful album, with the feel of an intimate concert. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

Album No. 8

Katie Melua

Pop - Released October 16, 2020 | BMG Rights Management (UK) Ltd

Hi-Res
At 36 years old, the queen of the romantic, sophisticated ballad has released her 8th album, simply named Album no.8. While the title is minimal, the means in which the work was produced are far from it. Here, Katie Melua is joined by the Georgian Philharmonic Orchestra. The collaboration is rather apt considering the British singer’s Georgian origins. The strings serve as a luxurious backdrop to these often-autobiographical songs which cover subjects from the end of a loving relationship (A Love Like That, Airtime), to a journey she took with her father in the Caucasus mountains (Leaving the Mountain). The orchestra is present on each of the tracks but by no means does it squander the delicacy of the songs. Especially when some soloists (sax, piano, guitar…) or even a funky and jazzy rhythmic section occasionally drop in to lighten up the proceedings (Voices in the night). Producer Leo Abrahams did the arrangements on the album which sometimes evoke the finesse of Nick Drake or the contemplative emotion of John Barry. We also find an homage to the choreographer Pina Buasch, cowritten with Zurab, Katie’s brother (Maybe I Dreamt It), a tender evocation of the singer’s childhood (Heading Home), and also the very seductive English Manner, the portrait of a love triangle, unveiling a more colourful aspect to Katie Melua’s art. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

Remind Me (The Classic Elektra Recordings 1978-1984)

Patrice Rushen

Soul/Funk/R&B - Released July 19, 2019 | Strut

It was an inspired decision to shine a light on the endearing but often neglected star of late 70s/early 80s smooth jazz and soul music that is Patrice Rushen. She released her debut jazz album at just 20 years old, before quickly transitioning to a funkier disco sound. Beginning to fall into oblivion, it was the continuous sampling of her songs from rappers like Mobb Deep, Junior M.A.F.I.A., Slum Village, Mary J. Blige, Organized Konfusion and most notably Will Smith (who sampled Forget Me Nots for the Men In Black soundtrack) that breathed new life into her career.A gifted pianist and an expert composer, Rushen signed to the Prestige label at a very young age in 1974, before later joining Asylum/Elektra four years later. It is this period (1974 – 1984) that has been compiled here by the British label. “The idea was to create music that was good for commercial radio/R&B,” the Californian explains. “We were all making sophisticated dance music, essentially”. The album is full of top-tier funky soul, played by the some of the biggest and best names working in music today. “L.A. musicians were not so locked into tradition. None of us were accustomed to limitation and the record label left us to take our own direction”. Remind Me (The Classic Elektra Recordings 1978-1984) is a perfect collection of beautiful ballads (Settle For My Love), dancefloor anthems (Never Gonna Give You Up), groovy tunes with heavy basslines (Music Of The Earth, Let’s Sing A Song Of Love) and disco (Haven’t You Heard). Enough to remind you that this legend of soul and disco is deserving of an artistic renaissance. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Straight From The Heart

Patrice Rushen

Soul/Funk/R&B - Released April 14, 1982 | Strut

An early-'80s jazz-pop-R&B synthesis as durable and pleasing as any other, Straight from the Heart was Patrice Rushen's most successful album, at least from a sales standpoint: it peaked at number 14 on the pop chart, 25 slots higher than 1980's Pizzazz. Still working with a core group of associates -- including Freddie Washington, Charles Mims, Paul M. Jackson, and Marlo Henderson (along with a still young Gerald Albright) -- that went back to her earlier Elektra albums, the material here is as slick as ever, but not at the expense of lighter rhythms or less memorable melodies. Much of the album's popularity can be attributed to the club hit "Forget Me Nots," Rushen's most-known single -- a breezy, buoyant mixture of handclaps, fingersnaps, twisting bass, and Rushen's typically blissful (and not overplayed) electric piano, not to mention the incorporation of a bad bass-and-percussion breakdown. (If you were born after the mid-'70s or so, you'd be more likely to recognize the song as the basis of Will Smith's "Men in Black.") Beyond a forgettable ballad or two, the only disappointment is the Brenda Russell collaboration on "Breakout!," where rock affectations (gnarling electric guitar, grimacing vocal tactics that suit neither Rushen nor Russell) damage what could've been a bigger hit. "Remind Me," despite not being released as a single, is a sweet and low-slung groove that has been sampled and interpolated by no less than a dozen significant rap and R&B songs -- including Faith Evans' "Fallin' in Love," Notorious B.I.G.'s "Unbelievable," MoKenStef's "He's Mine," and Junior M.A.F.I.A.'s "I Need You Tonight." But it's not like anything about this album requires that kind of validation. [Rhino's 1996 reissue adds the 12" versions of all three singles, including seven very replayable minutes of "Forget Me Nots," as well as two single edits.]© Andy Kellman /TiVo

Sandie

Sandie Shaw

Pop - Released February 1, 1965 | UMC (Universal Music Catalogue)

Even if you're in the Sandie Shaw cult, you might be disappointed, even aghast, at the quality of her debut LP. From every standpoint, it betrayed hasty execution--wafer-thin production, shoddy original material (none of her early singles are included), lousy covers of American and British pop and rock hits, and one-dimensional vocalizing and interpretive skills from Sandie herself. The British public didn't care, sending it to #3 in the charts; in fact, it was her most successful album in the U.K. The LP was reissued in its entirety as part of the 55-track 64/67 Complete Sandy Shaw, where listeners can easily skip it or program its omission if they want to stick with the singles.© Richie Unterberger /TiVo
