Aaliyah

Aaliyah

R&B - Released July 7, 2001 | Blackground Records, LLC

Just over a month after the release of her third self-titled album, Aaliyah died at the age of 22 in a plane crash along with nine other people. The shockwaves of sadness only heightened the impact of this record, released on 17 July 2001, which was also graced by the deft and grandiloquent electronic stylings of her producer-mentor Timbaland. From this collaboration were born the timeless singles More Than A Woman, We Need A Resolution and Try Again. But it would be unfair to this record to reduce it to those few strokes of genius, however superb they may be. Other producers like Key Beats, Bud'da, Eric Seats and J-Dub were also architects of this RnB classic. In fact, it was the latter who provided the instrumentation for the track I Refuse, a single that was somewhat forgotten over the years and which stands out for its gravity and tension. Aaliyah's voice is sublime on Rock The Boat, with complex and beautifully mixed harmonies in the tradition of Mariah Carey or Brandy. The singer was killed on her way to the video shoot for the song on 25 August 2001 in Marsh Harbour, in the Bahamas. But the song is full of optimism, sensuality, excellent synthetic arrangements, and it symbolises the artist's thirst for musical discovery. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz

An unusual album in the Louis Armstrong canon, this collection of gospel songs, spirituals, homilies, and comic vignettes was the only religious album this determinedly secular musician recorded. Backed by a gospel vocal group led by the celebrated jazz arranger Sy Oliver, Armstrong performs a variety of religious-themed favorites, including "Ezekiel Saw De Wheel," "Going to Shout All Over God's Heaven," and "Didn't it Rain," as well as "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat" from GUYS AND DOLLS. There's an affecting version of the traditional spiritual "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child," and a particular highlight is the inclusion of two comic sermons by the musician's alter ego, Elder Eatmore.© TiVo

Rock It to the Moon

Electrelane

Alternative & Indie - Released April 30, 2001 | Too Pure

Barking dogs, carnival rides, storming guitars, and organs -- lots of organs -- ranging from ominous to pummeling figure in Electrelane's debut. It's quite possible that most of the songs are the result of jamming. That's what it sounds like, at least. Jam-based records are prone to much noodling, which isn't a problem with Rock It to the Moon; actually, the predominantly instrumental record sounds like a live show with lots of ebbs, flows, freakouts, and chill-outs. It's a rare instance where the maximum space allowed on a disc is used in a good way for a studio record. Electrelane didn't just stuff it because they happened to have enough songs. And the length doesn't smack of a massive collective ego; it smacks more of a group too excited to be making music together to ever stop. There are too many ideas floating throughout and there are too many extended passages to warrant major pruning. If a disc held 100 minutes, this would probably be 99 minutes long. Besides, who wants to put a stop to fun? "Long Dark" crosses Stereolab with Duane Eddy; it even throws some "Peter Gunn" into its nine minutes, along with some feverish keyboard licks that mimic Hot Butter's "Popcorn." "Gabriel" is probably the best Cliff's Notes summation of the record, beginning with a mournful lurch that explodes into a frenzy of blasting, racing instruments and those wild keyboards featured earlier. Imagine a funeral procession turning into a chase scene that passes through a desert, only to end abruptly with a pileup. Those barking dogs mentioned earlier remind one of Pink Floyd's "Dogs," but that's laid to rest when a contorted voice intones "I wanna be your dog." Ahh, the dogs are a Stooges reference -- of course. © Andy Kellman /TiVo

Gospel

The Weavers

Folk/Americana - Released January 1, 1997 | Vanguard Records

Given their reputation for being, well, godless Communists, the concept of a gospel album by the Weavers is curious on its face. In fact, however, much of the group's repertoire derived from folk and spiritual sources, sometimes with specifically religious subject matter, sometimes just with church-based origins. In these tracks, compiled from their 1955-1963 recordings, the Weavers address such familiar inspirational material as "When the Saints Go Marching In," "Sinner Man," and "True Religion," as well as gospel-influenced folk songs like "Follow the Drinking Gourd," which concerns the Underground Railroad that helped slaves to freedom, and their own politically charged "If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)," which bridged religious fervor and social activism. Combining the Pete Seeger and Erik Darling eras of the group, this is an excellent thematic arrangement of Weavers music, the only serious criticism of it being that, at under 38 minutes, it could have been longer.© William Ruhlmann /TiVo
