Versailles (Rameau, Visée, Royer, Couperin, Lully...)

Alexandre Tharaud

Classical - Released November 15, 2019 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason - Choc de Classica
One never comes across any ordinariness when following Alexandre Tharaud’s career. This new album is as impressive in the originality of its conception as much as its meticulous musical delivery. The French pianist appears to be nostalgic towards two different golden ages: that of 17th-century music, and that of the French piano during the 1950s, specifically Marcelle Meyer’s inspiring playing which Tharaud remains motivated by. The “Versailles” which has attracted Alexandre Tharaud, and serves as the title for this recital is less Louis XIV’s opulent world of wonder and more of an intimate world of secret music. Without any difficulty, the pianist manages to make these pieces specifically written for the harpsichord his own, even going as far as inviting young harpsichordist Justin Taylor to join him for a rendition of Rameau’s Les Sauvages... for four hands on the piano! If the pianist Marcelle Meyer had recorded Rameau and Couperin in an era more liberal than today, Alexandre Tharaud has the audacity to go against musicological rules for the listener’s benefit. Of course, we are accustomed to Bach, Scarlatti, Couperin and Rameau on the modern piano, but Pancrace Royer, Robert de Visée, Jean-Henry D’Anglebert and Jacques Duphly are suddenly thrust into the limelight of this musical collection which incidentally highlights their relevance. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Rameau & Couperin: Pièces pour clavier

Clément Lefebvre

Classical - Released May 18, 2018 | Evidence (LTR)

Hi-Res Booklet
For his first record, the young French pianist Clément Lefebvre has selected Couperin and Rameau, whom he presents here in the very original form of an expressive journey through a single day, from morning to night. On the way, Lefebvre moves from one composer to another and playing on their suggestive titles, he underlines what unites and divides them with a subtle intelligence. Clément Lefebvre showed a keen interest in music from a young age. He started playing piano at the age of four, before discovering percussion. After studies and winning prizes in these two instruments at the Conservatoire de Lille, he decided to concentrate fully on the piano. Hortense Cartier-Bresson taught him at the Conservatoire de Boulogne-Billancourt and prepared him for the entrance competition for the Conservatoire de Paris (CNSMD). Clément Lefebvre entered the prestigious institution in 2010 and learned with Roger Muraro, Isabelle Dubuis, Claire Désert, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, and Alain Planès. He also received masterclasses from Philippe Bianconi, Xu Zhong, Michael Lewin, Christian Ivaldi, Emmanuel Strosser as well as from members of the Wanderer Trio. Clément Lefebvre won the First Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2016 James Mottram international piano competition in Manchester. A soloist, he also enjoys chamber music, whether with the Alban Berg Piano Quartet which he founded with a few friends, or as part of a duet with pianist Alexandre Leroy. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Chopin, Debussy & Ravel

Kim Bernard

Classical - Released June 17, 2022 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
In a way, young pianist Kim Bernard sets himself a big challenge by choosing very standard repertory works for his debut album over unusual pieces. After all, to make an impression with Chopin, Debussy, and Ravel is more difficult than it is with, say, Charles-Valentin Alkan or Louise Farrenc. Furthermore, Bernard is the kind of player whose virtues come from thorough training, of the sort that can squeeze the life out of the music. He is not a subjective pianist but rather one who executes the music cleanly down to its small details. As it happens, he has the chops to impress listeners anyhow, and one wants to hear more from this artist. He is at his absolute best in Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin, a neo-Baroque work whose ornaments ring brilliantly under Bernard's hands. His angular reading of Debussy's L'isle joyeuse is also memorable, even if his pieces from Book I of Images may be too dry for some tastes. There is absolutely no shortage of recordings of the Chopin works at the beginning of the program, but Bernard persuades that he has something new to say about them; consider the entrancing Berceuse, Op. 57. With excellent sound from the Studio de Meudon, this is an auspicious debut.© James Manheim /TiVo

Tombeau pour Mr. de Sainte Colombe & autres portraits... (Collection Printemps des arts de Monte-Carlo)

Ensemble Spirale

Classical - Released March 1, 2008 | Zig-Zag Territoires

As a follow-up to their 2006 disc debut featuring the works of the great French Baroque composer Marin Marais, gambaist Marianne Müller and her Ensemble Spirale released this 2008 disc, Tombeau pour Mr. de Ste. Colombe & autres portraits..., featuring works by contemporaries of Marais as well as three works by Marais himself, including the title track. As before, Müller demonstrates her rich tone, strong technique, and agile dexterity. Her performance of the opening Prelude by Ste. Colombe is forcefully expressive, while her duet with second gambaist Emily Audouin in Concert à deux violes égales is tenderly sensual. And as before, the Ensemble Spirale not only supports her in the ensemble works, but its individual members shine in the smaller works. Claire Antonini's performance of Denis Gautier's Tombeau de Gautier is both technically accomplished and emotionally affecting. It should be noted that the performance of the Tombeau pour Mr. de Ste. Colombe, which gives this disc its title, is the same stoically doleful performance that appeared on Müller and the Ensemble Spirale's previous disc. In both cases, it fits right in: there as the closing work in E minor Suite, here as the epitaph following two works by Ste. Colombe. Once again, Zig-Zag Territoires' sound is clear, close, and extremely atmospheric. © TiVo
