Dance!

Daniel Hope

Classical - Released February 2, 2024 | Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

Hi-Res
Violinist Daniel Hope's publicity for this 2024 release promotes it as "[t]racing the history of Western dance from medieval times to the 20th century." It is true that the double album includes music of many eras, from traditional pieces to the 20th century, but this formulation fails to capture the mood achieved here by the always crowd-pleasing Hope. All his selections are short, and for the most part, they jump across the centuries rather than being chronological. Hope both plays and conducts the Zürcher Kammerorchester, and the overall effect is kaleidoscopic, like one of those concerts where pieces follow one another as if in a medley, with lighting effects to match. A double album of short pieces may seem a lot, but this is Hope's point; he seeks to expose the variety of dance rhythms that course through Western classical music, in which dance is not usually thought to play a very significant role. The album is a great deal of fun, with Hope alternately picking up his violin and laying it aside and veering from Baroque dances to Florence Beatrice Price's jazzy "Ticklin' Toes" (it is good to hear her music showing up on non-U.S. releases). In the end, the energy in this big group of 42 pieces never flags.© James Manheim /TiVo

This Could Be Texas

English Teacher

Alternative & Indie - Released April 12, 2024 | Universal-Island Records Ltd.

Hi-Res
This Could Be Texas is the debut album from Leeds, U.K.-based indie band English Teacher. This record combines semi-spoken word delivery with a knotty take on post-punk, as on lead singles "Mastermind Specialism" and "Nearly Daffodils."© Liam Martin /TiVo

Hardware

Billy F Gibbons

Rock - Released June 4, 2021 | Concord Records

Hi-Res
The old Texan proverb that "you find the best frozen margaritas in the oldest glasses" certainly applies to this third solo album by Billy Gibbons. Having swerved between genres with The Big Bad Blues (2018) and Perfectamundo (2015), the brains behind ZZ Top has gone back to basics with Hardware, which sounds like a personal jukebox of his own creation. It’s a gleaming machine that contains everything that inspired his music since the bearded trio's beginnings in 1971: blues, hard rock, country rock and even surf music. This is all original material, with the exception of a cover of the Texas Tornados' Hey Baby, Que Paso. These songs have been written with the help of old accomplices like the former Guns'N'Roses drummer Matt Sorum, guitarist Austin Hanks, Mike Fiorentino, Chad Shlosser and, on Stackin' Bones, the young sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell from the duo Larkin Poe. From the first riffs of My Lucky Card, we are treated to a full-strength Gibbons performance, with typically dirty Texan blues rock, implacable as the desert sun that beats down on Palm Springs where Hardware was recorded. The flawless Telecaster solo on Vagabond Man underscores the power of this sound: it has been heard a thousand times before, but Billy Gibbons gives it a uniquely human touch. And whether you prefer the boogie anthem La Grange (1973) or the radio hit Gimme All Your Lovin' (1983), on this record the ZZ Top frontman is really pandering to all the fans, past and present, of his timeless rock'n'roll. This album is classic, solid, and unmistakable. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Elgar: Enigma Variations, Introduction & Allegro

London Symphony Orchestra

Classical - Released June 5, 2007 | LSO Live

Hi-Res Booklet
Lackadaisical in the Enigma Variations and slapdash in the Introduction and Allegro for strings, this addendum to Colin Davis and the London Symphony's series of masterful recordings of Elgar's symphonies and oratorio "The Dream of Gerontius" is distinctly, even acutely, disappointing. Recorded live in January 2007, Davis and the LSO seem to be trying in the Enigma, but they aren't able to sustain the lines or the tempos. There are some marvelous moments here -- the hushed opening of Nimrod is magnificent -- but too often the rhythms drag and the tempos flag -- the tedious remainder of Nimrod seems to go on forever. Recorded in September and December 2005, the Introduction and Allegro betrays its origins with scrappy, sloppy, and disjointed with astonishingly out-of-tune playing from the LSO's strings. There are many better recordings of both works available -- to start with, try Boult's Enigma or Barbirolli's Introduction and Allegro -- this disc is for Davis completists only. LSO's live digital sound here is oddly neither as clear nor as immediate as its earlier recordings. © TiVo

Satch And Josh

Count Basie

Jazz - Released January 1, 1975 | Fantasy Records

Producer Norman Granz occasionally got carried away with the quantity of his recording projects. In 1974 he recorded a full album teaming fellow pianists Count Basie and Oscar Peterson in a rhythm quintet; little did anyone realize that this then-unique matchup would eventually result in five albums. This first one, which finds Basie doubling on organ, is among the best. Peterson's virtuosic style somehow worked very well with Basie's sparse playing and these ten numbers really swing.© Scott Yanow /TiVo

Martha Argerich & Friends Live at the Lugano Festival 2013 (Édition StudioMasters)

Martha Argerich

Chamber Music - Released May 19, 2014 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason
Each year, Martha Argerich and her friends gather for the summer festival in Lugano, Switzerland, to perform a variety of chamber and keyboard works that showcase musical talents across generations. Highlights of these performances have been released annually on box sets that are representative of these artists' brilliant virtuosity and fine musicianship. The set for 2013 includes performances of works by Beethoven, Respighi, Liszt, Shostakovich, Ravel, Debussy, Offenbach, and Saint-Saëns, presented with enthusiasm by Argerich and her friends Mischa Maisky, Renaud Capuçon, Gautier Capuçon, Francesco Piemontesi, Alissa Margulis, Jura Margulis, Gabriela Montero, Cristina Marton, and many others, some of whom have become frequent guests at the festival. While most of the performances have an intimate character, as might be expected in the cello sonatas of Beethoven and Shostakovich, and the violin sonatas of Respighi and Ravel, there are larger scale works that frame the package: the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1, which Argerich performs with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, conducted by Hubert Soudant, and the chamber orchestra version of Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals, so there is some variety, though the emphasis is, as in previous years, on chamber music.© TiVo

R&B Skeletons In The Closet

George Clinton

R&B - Released January 1, 1986 | Capitol Records

A definite improvement over the uneven Some of My Best Jokes Are Friends, the considerably more focused and confident R&B Skeletons in the Closet is one of George Clinton's strongest solo efforts. The P-Funkster continues using technology extensively, but this time, his blend of technology and "real instruments" sounds much more natural. Though not quite in a class with Parliament classics like Mothership Connection or Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome or Funkadelic treasures ranging from Cosmic Slop to Uncle Jam Wants You, Skeletons is a superb collection that's well worth acquiring. The CD kicks into high gear with the wildly infectious "Hey Good Lookin'" and maintains that high level of excitement on such driving, sweaty funk treasures as "Do Fries Go With That Shake?" and the appropriately titled "Intense" and the title song. Clinton's eccentricity and outrageous sense of humor serve him well on "Electric Pygmies" and "Mix-Master Suite," an unorthodox, quirky, and cinematic ode to hip-hop drawing on everything from jazz to classical music to Western movies. Many of Clinton's longtime associates are on hand to help make this album the artistic success it is, including saxman Maceo Parker, trombonist Fred Wesley, and the ever-amusing Bootsy Collins.© Alex Henderson /TiVo
