Albéniz: Iberia

Nelson Goerner

Solo Piano - Released May 6, 2022 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Choc de Classica
Debussy and Messiaen regarded Iberia as THE piano masterpiece of the twentieth century: "One’s eyes close, as if dazzled from having gazed upon too many images", wrote Debussy in 1905. For Nelson Goerner too, this suite in four books, which evokes Andalusia and the working-class districts of Madrid, is a work of major stature: "I am of Argentinian origin, this music touches me, it is like an arrow that pierces me... From the sublime incantation that is Jerez, an invocation of the mysteries of night, to Lavapiès, famous for the pianistic difficulties posed by its polyphonic convolutions and hand-crossings, Albéniz’s music exudes a panache and a joie de vivre that, in my view, make it a milestone of supreme importance". © Alpha Classics

Cyclorama

Polo & Pan

Electronic - Released June 25, 2021 | Universal Music Division Virgin Music Distribution Deal

Hi-Res
Parisian duo Polo & Pan (Paul Armand-Delille and Alexandre Grynszpan, respectively) have made a name for themselves as producers of infectious, bouncy electronic pop with strong tropical highlights and a colorful, sometimes retro aesthetic. Their 2017 debut album, Caravelle, featured a panoply of quirky samples and singers and stood out thanks to both its tight craft and loungey elegance. Polo & Pan's delightful 2020 EP Feel Good seems to have been a precursor to this second full-length, Cyclorama, as three of the EP's four cuts have been folded into this set. Like the duo's debut, Cyclorama is fashionable, melodic, and undeniably fun, mixing dancefloor appeal with smart pop songwriting. Not unlike their European forebears Air and Röyksopp, Polo & Pan blur the lines between electronic music's traditional roles of producer, artist, DJ, remixer, and composer, managing a bit of each with plenty of finesse while creating a distinctive brand of their own. And they sing! The cinematic "Ani Kuni'' is the album's showstopper here with its cinematic Morricone-like intro and choral melody based on an Indigenous Arapaho chant. The album's sequence winds through carefully paced moods, pitting dark against light with the eerie "Requiem" into "Feel Good" combo before moving into its second half. Polo & Pan have an impressive sense of scope, moving through myriad exotic landscapes without losing sight of their signature sonic palette and innate sense of class. The result feels like a sumptuous global journey accompanied by a cocktail tray and two impossibly suave tuxedoed guides.© Timothy Monger /TiVo

Faces

Mac Miller

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released May 11, 2014 | Warner Records

Hi-Res
Faces followed Watching Movies with the Sound Off in just under a year. Considerably deeper and darker than the preceding album, it's classified as a mixtape -- originally a free download, revised and released by Warner digitally and on vinyl -- but certainly has the artistic and emotional impact of a proper LP. Within the sequence are some of Mac Miller's casually boastful and potent rhymes. More often, however, it shows the rapper examining his fragile state, reckoning with mortality, frankly despondent yet still able to construct ingenious cadences with lines like "I'm the only suicidal motherf*cker with a smile on." Miller relates his ascendancy and self-destruction in measured verging on meandering style, occasionally allowing the likes of Thundercat, ID Labs, Earl Sweatshirt, and 9th Wonder to either assist or spell him on production. The beats, energized and bleary only when Miller's self-praise and most addled moments call for it, tend to sound crafted for the sake of alleviating anxiety.© Andy Kellman /TiVo

Leyendas

Thibaut García

Classical - Released September 2, 2016 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason
Many young European guitarists are jockeying for the position of inheritor to the greats of the instrument in the late 20th century, but this debut release from the 22-year-old Spanish-French guitarist Thibaut Garcia serves notice of strong competition indeed. The program of mostly Spanish favorites has a few novelties: the fabulous arrangement for solo guitar of Astor Piazzolla's Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas (Buenos Aires Four Seasons) by Brazilian guitarist Sergio Assad; the short piece by Antonio Jiménez Manjón; and the guitar-and-cello version of Falla's Siete canciones populares españolas. But the real attraction is the incredible fluidity of Garcia's playing. The Piazzolla pieces are, in his hands, the most rhythmic of the bunch. Sample the Invocación y danza of Joaquín Rodrigo for an idea of both Garcia's smoothness and suavity and the perfect fit it makes with Erato's engineering work, accomplished at the Maladrerie Saint-Lazare in Beauvais. A maladrerie is a leper hospital, and this one is well known as a concert venue with sound that somehow manages to be both intimate and profound. For guitar music, the results here would be difficult to improve upon, with total clarity in Garcia's difficult runs and not a bit of extraneous noise. This is a remarkable meeting of performer and venue, and the whole thing is a rare pleasure that will lead listeners to rediscover some familiar favorites.© TiVo

White On Blonde

Texas

Rock - Released March 2, 1997 | [PIAS] Recordings Catalogue

Unexpectedly, Texas became a popular sensation prior to the release of White on Blonde when Chris Evans made the soulful single "Say What You Want" the de facto theme song on his morning program on Radio 1. On the strength of his support, Texas was catapulted to previously unthinkable success, and the majority of the fans who thought the number one single was fine shouldn't have been disappointed with the full-length album. A combination of roots-rock and soul, White on Blonde occasionally has more style than substance, but Sharleen Spiteri's gorgeous vocals and the band's professionalism make the record a charming, ingratiating listen.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Porque existe otro querer

Marina Viotti

Mélodies - Released April 14, 2023 | Aparté

Hi-Res Booklet
This program of love songs from mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti and guitarist Gabriel Bianco boils down a variety of music to the combination of voice and guitar, with most of the songs arranged by Bianco himself. To perform the likes of Fauré on a guitar is unusual, but it works in this context, where the performers draw entirely unexpected connections between French music, Latin American popular song, and more. It is a bold program, and it is gorgeous. Viotti's voice is a magnificent instrument, warm and rounded but with a haze that hints at many experiences in the world. Her experience extends from opera to metal; she is neither French nor Spanish nor Latin American, but it would be hard to find a singer more suited to this project. Bianco's guitar is an agile thing, capable of hanging back or jumping into the dialogue. The words "Porque existe otro querer" ("because another love exists") come from a Cuban popular song of 1945, Dos Gardenias, that was composed by Isolina Carrillo and also recorded by Buena Vista Social Club, Daniel Santos, and others. One could start by sampling that, or one of the Siete canciones populares españolas of Falla, the original locus point for the grand fusion the performers are seeking. The players conclude with the zippy La danza of Rossini and a German song by Pauline Viardot that somewhat breaks the romantic mood, but by that time, it hardly matters; the listener will be totally satisfied. Aparte delivers excellent studio sound that captures all the many shades on display. © James Manheim /TiVo

Überjam

The John Scofield Band

Jazz - Released January 1, 2002 | Verve

In the jazz world, there are artists who are consistent but predictable and artists who are unpredictable but inconsistent. John Scofield, meanwhile, is an impressive example of a jazzman who is both unpredictable and consistent. You never know what the risk-taking guitarist will do from one album to the next, but he rarely provides an album that is flat-out disappointing. Überjam is a major departure from 2000's Works for Me, the Verve date that preceded it. While Works for Me is essentially a straight-ahead post-bop outing and employs acoustic-oriented players, like pianist Brad Mehldau and bassist Christian McBride, Überjam is pure, unadulterated fusion. This album always has a jazz mentality -- Überjam is as spontaneous, free-spirited, and uninhibited as any bop session that was recorded in Rudy Van Gelder's studio in the '50s -- but on Überjam, having a jazz mentality doesn't mean excluding elements of funk, rock, and, at times, hip-hop and club music. To those who fancy themselves jazz purists, the phrase "pure, unadulterated fusion" will sound like an oxymoron; if jazz is fused, how can it be real, authentic jazz? But then, George Duke hit the nail on the head when he asserted that jazz was always fusion; even back in the days of Jelly Roll Morton and King Oliver, jazz had a variety of influences. It simply became more fused when Miles Davis recorded Bitches Brew and In a Silent Way in the late '60s. And speaking of Davis, much of Überjam reflects Scofield's years with that restless trumpeter. Like many of Davis' fusion efforts, Überjam has no problem being cerebral and funky at the same time. The material tends to be abstract and intellectual, but not at the expense of grit. Überjam is yet another excellent album from an improviser who refuses to be predictable.© Alex Henderson /TiVo

Musical instruments made to sing! This album invites you to travel from Spain to South America in the company of the greatest composers the countries of the region have produced: next to Spanish folk songs reshaped by Falla, compositions by Casals, Granados, Montsalvatge, and the beloved Ária from the Bachiana brasileira by Villa-Lobos, an Argentine tango by Piazzolla is paired with its Spanish counterpart by Albéniz (though his is in the form of a habanera). A wide-ranging programme which brings together two virtuoso soloists... who are not about to part. © harmonia mundi
