Inception

Hans Zimmer

Film Soundtracks - Released July 9, 2010 | WaterTower Music

Hi-Res
Between 1988 and 2010, composer Hans Zimmer has had a hand in nearly every major action film, whether it’s him behind the keys or one of his numerous, Remote Control Productions (formerly known as Media Ventures) protégés like John Powell, Harry Gregson-Williams, or Klaus Badelt. His excellent work on director Christopher Nolan’s 2008 international blockbuster The Dark Knight, was disqualified for Oscar consideration due to too many cooks (composers) in the kitchen, a handicap that doesn’t apply to Nolan’s 2010 follow-up, Inception. Zimmer’s signature move, a four- to eight-chord round that builds from a subtle breeze to an F5 tornado, serves as the foundation for Inception’s dizzying score, and the addition of Smiths/Cribs guitarist Johnny Marr, who appears on eight of the twelve cuts, dutifully expands the layers of Zimmer’s melodies, much like the dream building that occurs onscreen. There are moments that bring to mind Vangelis' moody, jazz-kissed work on Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, but Inception's backbone is pure Zimmer. It’s beautiful and heroic, unhinged and unspeakably melancholy, and the finest and most fully realized soundtrack this prolific composer has crafted to date.© James Christopher Monger /TiVo

Point Of Know Return

Kansas

Pop/Rock - Released October 11, 1977 | Epic - Legacy

This is the definitive Kansas recording and includes their most famous tune, "Dust in the Wind." The band is in peak form and also churned out the single "Point of Know Return," which is still played daily on classic rock stations. While their pop-oriented approach and standard rock guitar sound helped define the classic rock sound of the '70s, careful listening reveals that this band's talent goes beyond colleagues such as Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Boston. Their arrangements and time signatures more accurately reflect the music of Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. "Paradox" and "The Spider" are both excellent examples of their progressive approach. Unfortunately, the band always struggled to maintain a healthy balance of progression combined with pop. That made for such awkward moments here as "Portrait (He Knew)" and "Lightning's Hand." Yet despite the minor inconsistencies and a dated sound, their interplay and superior musicianship make this both an essential classic rock and progressive rock recording.© Robert Taylor /TiVo

The Stage

Avenged Sevenfold

Rock - Released October 13, 2016 | Capitol Records (US1A)

Hi-Res
The seventh studio long-player from the veteran California-based metal ensemble, and their first new collection of music to feature ex-Bad Religion drummer Brooks Wackerman behind the kit, The Stage sees Avenged Sevenfold rolling up their sleeves and delivering an ambitious concept LP. Dropped with little to no promotion -- WWE superstar and Fozzy frontman Chris Jericho leaked the album's original title, Voltaic Oceans, via his Instagram account a month prior to the release -- the narrative concerns itself with the Orwellian consequences of a world struggling to adapt to the myriad complexities of artificial intelligence -- there's even a spoken word appearance by celebrity astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Despite some forays into Floyd-ian space rock -- the soloing in the orchestra-driven "Roman Sky" is positively Gilmour-esque -- the 11-track set mostly sticks to the kind of propulsive, melodic carnage that fans have come to expect from the group, albeit with a progressive metal twist. Avenged Sevenfold may have expanded their sonic horizons, but The Stage is more Operation: Mindcrime-era Queensrÿche than it is Muse, and for all its opining on nanotechnology and interstellar travel, it still feels rooted in heavy metal tradition.© James Christopher Monger /TiVo

Shabaka

Jazz - Released May 20, 2022 | Impulse!

Hi-Res
Pioneer and figurehead of the new London jazz scene, Shabaka Hutchings is the inspiration and catalyst behind a large number of groups and collectives that mix genres and styles with great artistic freedom (Sons of Kemet, Shabaka and the Ancestors, The Comet is Coming). Now he’s back with an intimate record that’s as simple in its composition as it is powerful in its poetic and spiritual dimensions. Abandoning his saxophone in favour of the flute, clarinet and the shakuhaschi (a traditional Japanese flute with an ethereal sound), Shabaka—whether playing solo or in a duet (accompanied by Alina Bzhezhinska on harp, Kadialy Kouyate on Kora, Dave Okumu on guitar or Kwake Bass on the drum machine, depending on the track)—makes the most of all the technical possibilities offered by the studio to produce eight finely tuned tracks that take the listener on a deeply syncretic and dreamlike journey. His beautiful playing coupled with his intentionally simple, minimalistic songs and clear melodies is magical, each track seamlessly linking to the next and expressing traditions and sounds from all around the globe. Enchanting, soothing, fraternal: it’s hard not to think of the libertarian world music of Don Cherry when you listen to this sincere and harmonious album. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz

Geometry of Love

Jean Michel Jarre

Techno - Released August 24, 2018 | Sony Music Catalog

Hi-Res
It was the early 2000 and downtempo and acid jazz were being smothered by the rise of French Touch house. But they found an escape route when lounge music flared into life, with its 90 BPM tempos, played at cool hangouts like the Mezzanine de l'Alcazar in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the Buddha Bar or the Costes hotel, all of which have brought out compilations in their own names. Although the movement wasn't quite a musical revolution, radio programmers took advantage of it to soften their playlists, and lounge invaded the bars and restaurants of Paris (soon to be replaced by Deep House, which was then languishing in a very deep basement indeed). It was in this context that the VIP Room discos, led by Jean Roch, commissioned Jean-Michel Jarre to produce this album of lounge music, which originally ran to only 2,000 CDs, and which is a part of the salvo of re-releases that the star French publisher is putting out in 2018. For this stylistic exercise, Jarre gives us a 40-minute demonstration of his mastery of the genre's codes – something he's not always managed to do with other styles – and offers up eight tracks of sensuality (an aspect emphasised by the title and the sleeve image of the pixellated pubis of his then-girlfriend, Isabelle Adjani), with Geometry of Love pt 1 as the climax, and some mystical moments (the Minimoog on Soul Intrusion), and others that approach ambient (Skin Paradox). While the record only offers a patchy discography of Jarre, it is nonetheless of great interest for his hardest-core fans, and it is a worthy testament to a certain era. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Ronn McFarlane

Chamber Music - Released November 20, 2020 | Sono Luminus

Hi-Res Booklet
This recording, writes viola da gamba player Carolyn Surrick in the notes, "exists because of this moment in time. The locked-down, minimalist, intense, and miraculous spring of 2020, which took so much from so many, allowed for this project to come to life with its unexpected creativity, enduring faith, and deep, deep gratitude." Surrick and lutenist Ronn McFarlane found themselves at musical loose ends, without gigs, and decided to play together, and then to record in a free-spirited way, taking up an instrumental pairing, lute and viola da gamba, that occurs only occasionally in Baroque and Renaissance literature. They augment Dowland's Adew for Master Oliver Cromwell (John Dowland) with newly composed works by McFarlane and with arrangements by both players. These are delightfully varied, taking up such works as The Allman Brothers' Little Martha (originally an acoustic guitar solo by Duane Allman, so not as odd as it sounds), Amazing Grace, and Gounod's Ave Maria. Some of the selections veer toward the Celtic folk side, including an intriguing version of Blackwater Slide modeled on one by Scottish musician Bert Jansch. Sono Luminus' sound is, well, luminous, a pleasure throughout. Falling into a class of pandemic-time recordings where musicians rediscovered the enjoyment of home music-making, this is an unusually satisfying example of the genre. © James Manheim /TiVo
