Hey Panda

The High Llamas

Soul - Released March 29, 2024 | Drag City

Hi-Res
You never quite know what you'll get with a new High Llamas album. That's certainly not a complaint—but a reflection of the insatiable curiosity and adventurous spirit of the band's founder and leader Sean O'Hagan. In recent times, he embarked on typically eclectic projects, including scoring the Safdie Brothers' 2022 film Funny Pages and contributing to The Coral's 2023 album Sea of Mirrors. For Hey Panda—the first High Llamas album since 2016's antique-pop opus Here Come the Rattling Trees—O'Hagan was inspired by the world-shifting production of the late J Dilla. "Dilla reshaped the world," he has said. "We live in the finest non-judgmental musical times where the legacies of soul, jazz and lo-fi indie have produced a hybrid of generous and stunning creativity. I want Hey Panda to be of this generation." It's a lofty goal, but Hey Panda successfully weaves together elements from all of those genres, encompassing bubbly pop ("Bade Amey"), glitchy beats (the hip-hop-influenced "Toriafan"), and whimsical electro (the strings-augmented "Sister Friends"). O'Hagan's spirit of collaboration is also strong. "How the Best Was Won" and "Hungriest Man" are co-writes with Bonnie "Prince" Billy and, unsurprisingly, both are highlights: The former resembles the watery electro of James Blake, while the latter is dreamy soul-folk.Hey Panda isn't totally divorced from the High Llamas' past; among other things, the sun-kissed bubblegum electro highlight "Fall Off the Mountain" is a higher-energy version of 1998's Cold and Bouncy. But O'Hagan's songwriting feels strikingly modern on Hey Panda—leading to refreshing (and refreshed) pop music that's a pure delight. © Annie Zaleski/Qobuz

Turning Red

Finneas O'Connell

Film Soundtracks - Released March 11, 2022 | Walt Disney Records

Hi-Res
While occasionally tense and suspenseful, the primarily playful soundtrack to Disney-Pixar's Turning Red consists of Ludwig Göransson's alternately elevator-jazzy and orchestral score alongside three original songs (and various reprises) written by the sibling powerhouse duo of Billie Eilish and FINNEAS. A coming-of-age story about a Chinese-Canadian girl, Meilin, who inherits a problematic supernatural ability triggered by strong emotions, it's set in Toronto in 2002. Majorly factoring into the plot is a concert by fictional teen boy band 4*TOWN, the recipient of the songs -- "Nobody Like U," "True Love," and "U Know What's Up" -- which find the voice lineup of FINNEAS, Jordan Fisher, Josh Levi, Topher Ngo, and Grayson Villanueva delivering melodic earworms in tandem with corny gems like "Had friends and I've had buddies, it's true/But they don't turn my tummy the way you do." Bolstered by the popularity of these throwback pop tunes, the Turning Red soundtrack landed on the Billboard 200.© Marcy Donelson /TiVo

Kung Fu Panda 2

John Powell

Film Soundtracks - Released January 1, 2011 | Varese Sarabande

Booklet
Co-composed by Hanz Zimmer and John Powell, both of whom helmed the first installment of the immensely popular Dreamworks animation series, the score for Kung Fu Panda 2 dutifully expands on the motifs that the pair introduced in the inaugural film. Zimmer, who traveled to China in 2007 to absorb the country’s rich musical history, adds more regional flare to the orchestral score this time around, but listeners who enjoyed the initial blend of swashbuckling, martial arts-inspired adventure themes and lush, pastoral interludes won’t come away disappointed, as the two styles are well represented here.© James Christopher Monger /TiVo

Kung Fu Panda

Hans Zimmer

Pop - Released January 1, 2008 | Interscope

Composers Hans Zimmer and John Powell infuse the score for Dreamworks' 2008 animated comedy-adventure Kung Fu Panda with plenty of semi-traditional Asian motifs and instrumentation, resulting in an enjoyable -- if entirely predictable -- soundtrack that deals out clichés like candy on Halloween. The opening track introduces the "Hero" theme, a wistful flute-led melody that sounds nearly identical to Howard Shore's "Hobbit" theme from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. What follows is largely orchestral, with bursts of tribal percussion and the occasional dance number. The soundtrack closes with star Jack Black and Cee-Lo Green performing "Kung Fu Fighting," a song whose inclusion is apparently mandatory for every film, commercial, or skit ever made involving Asian culture.© James Christopher Monger /TiVo
