The Hope Six Demolition Project - Demos

PJ Harvey

Alternative & Indie - Released March 11, 2022 | UMC (Universal Music Catalogue)

Hi-Res
Years before Trump, Brexit, and the rise of authoritarianism around the world inspired other artists, PJ Harvey was making music about societal issues. While her second album to tackle these concerns, 2016's The Hope Six Demolition Project, wasn't as consistently brilliant as its predecessor, 2011's Let England Shake, it reflected her commitment to embedding herself (and war photographer Seamus Murphy) in Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Washington, D.C., to tell its stories. However, The Hope Six Demolition Project: The Demos suggests that something may have been lost in translation when Harvey and her creative team went into the studio. While Let England Shake's songs gained a dignified heft in their polished final form, the early versions of Hope Six's songs often have a nimble immediacy that heightens their power. They're often even more pared-down than the demos for her previous album were; frequently, it's just Harvey and her guitar, and fans know how potent that combination is. Her voice and strumming ring out righteously on "The Wheel," "The Community of Hope," and "Near the Memorials to Vietnam and Lincoln," all of which evoke the spirit of '60s protest songs as much as her own early work. Occasionally, as on "Dollar Dollar," Harvey's sketches are so sparse that they threaten to float away. More often, though, the simpler approach on The Hope Six Demolition Project: The Demos lets the songs' moods and details shine through in ways they didn't on the studio versions. The meditative organ on "River Anacostia" is surprisingly affecting, as is the way the demo of "Chain of Keys" homes in on the song's hypnotic melody. The spontaneity of these sessions suits the journalistic feel of songs as different as "The Ministry of Defence," which feels just as startling here as it does on the final album, and the dreamlike version of "Orange Monkey." While The Hope Six Demolition Project: The Demos is one of Harvey's more unfinished-sounding sets of song sketches, sometimes that's for the better -- and, as always, it's fascinating to hear her music in its rawest state.© Heather Phares /TiVo

The Diabelli Project

Rudolf Buchbinder

Classical - Released March 2, 2020 | Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

Hi-Res Booklet
Beethoven's 32 Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli, Op. 120, have been programmed before with other variations that were published by Diabelli in a two-part volume along with Beethoven's set, and contemporary composers have written new variations on Diabelli's original waltz, but the program of pianist Rudolf Buchbinder's Diabelli Project is unique. Buchbinder offers a three-act sequence beginning with Beethoven's set and concluding with variations from the original Diabelli group, ending with the fine, brilliant coda by Carl Czerny. In the middle are contemporary pieces commissioned by Buchbinder and includes variations by several compositional heavyweights. One is the nearly nonagenarian Rodion Shchedrin, whose variation is delightful. Other highlights are the atmospheric Blue Orchid of Tan Dun and the variation by Jörg Widmann, who, unlike several of the others, writes a true variation on Diabelli's waltz rather than on one of Beethoven's variations. The original Diabelli variations include an impressively ambitious piece by the 11-year-old Liszt, one by Schubert, and one by Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart. Buchbinder's Beethoven set itself is straightforward and well-crafted; there are more dramatic versions, but his works well in this setting. The sound from Berlin's Jesus-Christus-Kirche is not ideal and robs the contemporary works of spontaneity, but this is an important entry in the continuing history of the Diabelli variations.© TiVo

Haydn: Baryton Trios, Vol. 2

Valencia Baryton Project

Chamber Music - Released November 24, 2023 | Naxos

Hi-Res Booklet
Haydn's baryton trios are rather uncommon items, largely because the baryton, a viola da gamba-like instrument with extra strings, has few competent players. One of these is Matthew Baker, who is heard here with violist Estevan de Almeida Reis and cellist Alex Friedhoff. Contemporary composers are hereby advised that new compositions for the instrument would be welcome, for it has a striking variety of possible timbres. The extra strings vibrate sympathetically but can also be plucked, an effect that Haydn exploits delightfully. Haydn wrote more than 150 works for the baryton at the request of his prince, Nikolaus Esterházy, who enjoyed playing the instrument; they date from the 1760s and 1770s. One wouldn't call them top-drawer Haydn, but they're fascinating. Haydn's palette is extremely restricted here, with the baryton inhabiting a mid-range that makes it difficult to differentiate from the viola and the cello. Yet he solves this problem in any number of inventive ways, and there are dozens of other small pleasures. Naxos scores with the engineering here, working in a Spanish castle that fits the music and has an attractive live quality that brings out the unusual sounds of the baryton. This release is the second of two devoted to Haydn's baryton trios; both are recommended, and there are plenty more pieces where these came from; one hopes to hear still further albums.© James Manheim /TiVo

The Hope Six Demolition Project

PJ Harvey

Alternative & Indie - Released April 15, 2016 | Vagrant Records

The Hope Six Demolition Project draws from several journeys undertaken by Harvey, who spent time in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Washington, D.C. over a four-year period. “When I’m writing a song I visualise the entire scene. I can see the colours, I can tell the time of day, I can sense the mood, I can see the light changing, the shadows moving, everything in that picture. Gathering information from secondary sources felt too far removed for what I was trying to write about. I wanted to smell the air, feel the soil and meet the people of the countries I was fascinated with”, says Harvey. The album was recorded last year in residency at London’s Somerset House. The exhibition, entitled ‘Recording in Progress’ saw Harvey, her band, producers Flood and John Parish, and engineers working within a purpose-built recording studio behind one-way glass, observed throughout by public audiences.
