Pays Sauvage

Emily Loizeau

French Music - Released January 1, 2009 | Polydor

Booklet Distinctions 3F de Télérama - Lauréat du prix Constantin
Three years after her debut with the album Autre Bout du Monde, French singer/songwriter Emily Loizeau released Pays Sauvage. The talented pianist has pushed other instruments to the forefront on this latest work, and her voice has reached a maturity ripe for more soulful songs, such as those found here. She's also brought several talented guest stars along for some collaborations, most notably, Moriarty on the track "Ma Maison." "Sister" and "Fais Battre Ton Tambour" highlight her growth as an artist, and may make this album appealing to a more sophisticated audience.© Celeste Rhoads /TiVo

Taking their cue from the highly active female-fronted alternative rock movement of the '90s, Dolly makes music that lands somewhere between the lush simplicity of Veruca Salt and the poignant songwriting of Bettie Serveert. They have definitely learned their lesson from the masters and utilize the sense of dynamics and use of fuzzy production techniques that have helped many like-minded artists put across their message. But for what Dolly offers in sheer visceral pleasantries, they still have a bit of a problem in the songwriting department. Their songs are quite enjoyable, but they don't really stand out from one another. The simple melodies and stylish guitar work do more damage than help, as they tend to make everything sound the same even though there is a very noticeable difference between the tracks when actually examined. But the band makes a very enjoyable noise, even if it is fairly indistinguishable, making this an entertaining but unessential album. Fans of this style of playing should definitely check this out; the band has the right idea, they just need to perfect the delivery.© Bradley Torreano /TiVo

Rossini: Guillaume Tell (Complete Version Live)

Virtuosi Brunensis

Opera - Released March 2, 2015 | Naxos

Booklet
Although everybody knows its overture, Rossini's Guillaume Tell (William Tell) has been performed much less often than many of Rossini's other operas. The reasons for this reach back into the musico-political world of the 19th century, but in any era have included the opera's difficulty for the singers as well as its extreme length. The composer himself was aware of the latter issue and consented to cuts in performances subsequent to the premiere, as well as to a new three-act version for which he wrote a second finale. This latter finale, included here as a supplement along with a couple of alternative dance numbers, was Rossini's very last operatic composition. But the purported main attraction of this is the "first recording of the complete opera," as it was heard in Paris at its 1829 premiere. That may well be of interest to serious Rossini fans, but general listeners might be equally satisfied with the somewhat shorter versions out there. The best thing about this performance, recorded live over four performances at Germany's Rossini in Wildbad festival in 2013, is the basic mechanics. Conductor Antonio Fogliani leads a diverse set of little-known forces including the Camerata Bach Choir of Poznán and the Czech Republic's Virtuosi Brunensis (despite the name, not a historical-instrument ensemble), and they deliver a rip-roaring overture whose energy is sustained over much of the first act's big choruses and ultimately over the four-plus hours of opera. The singers, not big names, are adequate to the task, but not exciting, and those in search of star performances will also be looking elsewhere. One is left with the impression that the definitive recording of this hugely ambitious work has yet to be made, but at least here all the material is laid out. The live sound is naturally a bit noisy but is generally clear.© TiVo
