FKA Twigs

Electronic - Released January 14, 2022 | Atlantic Records

Hi-Res
FKA twigs warns us from the outset on the track Ride the dragon: "I'm still this mysterious bitch". A self-professed mystic since her acclaimed 2014 debut album LP1, here the British singer-songwriter enlists producer El Guincho, notably known for helping shape Rosalía's music. The result is 17 versatile tracks, often moments of grace like the dreamlike meta angel, the determinedly RnB track oh my love, or the captivating minds of men. FKA Twigs is an all-rounder, interspersing this track list left, right and centre with interludes made up of authentic, but doctored, moments of life. And since it's all about having fun, she calls upon major artists such as The Weeknd for the hit tears in the club, or PA Salieu on the disturbing honda, which shows her artistic proximity to hyperpop queens such as Arca or her English compatriot Shygirl. Caprisongs is not looking for unity, and so much the better. It's further proof that FKA Twigs' mind is bursting with crazy but fantastic ideas, from the hallucinatory melodies of careless (featuring Daniel Caesar) to the massive arrangements of thank you song.  Daring to do everything without producing rubbish is a luxury reserved for the greatest, and here is the proof. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz

Claro Que Si

Yello

Pop - Released September 22, 1981 | Polydor

Another leap in musical sophistication made Yello's second album another high point in the development of synth pop. The future of Euro-disco and dance-pop are easily audible from the opening "Daily Disco" and other tracks like "Pinball Cha Cha," "The Evening's Young," and "Cuad el Habib." Though Claro Que Si is slightly more pop-oriented than the group's debut, with Boris Blank's electronics just as innovative and obtuse as before, that's hardly a step backward.© John Bush /TiVo

Bumba Massa

Africa - Released December 1, 2017 | Cantos Music

Booklet
Born in Latin America and inspired by African roots, rumba has taken a remarkable return trip to the Congo, where it continues to inspire dancers and musicians. With over 50 years on the stage, Bumba Massa has lived the history of this music from its earliest days. A singer in the Lovy Orchestra of Zaïre, with the star Vicky Longomba, then in OK Jazz with the mythical Franco, before working under the wing of the pioneering Henri Bowane. After his exile to Lomé in Togo at the end of the 1970s, he struck out on his own. A founding member of the Kékélé revival orchestra, founded by Africa's answer to Berry Gordy of Motown, Ibrahima Sylla, Bumba Massa never lost his faith - or his touch. His velvet voice and his rolling diction are still addictive. And this V70, recorded in Paris with the very best of Congo's Franco stylists, proves it across all eleven of these dazzling pieces from Bumba Massa, including a salute to the memory of his mentor Vicky Longomba in a torrid medley. An album for light hearts and nimble feet. © BM/Qobuz

Musique Mecanique

The Carla Bley Band

Jazz - Released April 1, 1979 | Watt

Carla Bley's tentet performs some of her most colorful themes on this often-humorous and generally stimulating set. "Jesus Maria and Other Spanish Strains" and the three-part "Musique Mecanique" are particularly memorable. This is the perfect setting for Bley's music, with such musicians as trumpeter Michael Mantler, Gary Windo on tenor and bass clarinet, trombonist Roswell Rudd and Bob Stewart on tuba making their presence felt. © Scott Yanow /TiVo

Victory for the Comic Muse

The Divine Comedy

Pop - Released June 19, 2006 | Parlophone UK

Download not available
To say that any Divine Comedy album feels overly calculated is somewhat pointless, given that Neil Hannon's cheeky musical alter ego is a nostalgic figure caught in a 1930s time warp to begin with. It's all about affection, as it were. But Victory for the Comic Muse is almost mathematical in its calculation: open with a jaunty number to get the audience excited; slow it down for four consecutive reflective ballads to suggest maturity; split the album in half with a throwaway piano instrumental like an old movie intermission; inject some life into the proceedings with four sprightly, comic selections; and close with a tearjerker. Such a structure means the album feels like two separate entities, almost like two EP collections jammed together representing two distinctly different phases of Hannon's career. As such, its highlights are more satisfying on their own than in the context of an LP. The ELO-like opener, "To Die a Virgin," seems to be another stab at "Generation Sex" territory, right down to its Fellini-esque opening samples. The slower numbers that follow are pleasant enough, with some alternately witty and touching lyrics, but Hannon's voice is so subdued as to be positively inoffensive and his back-to-basics production is weak. The second half starts with some welcome drive, as Hannon tackles the Associates song "Party Fears Two" with whimsical aplomb. "Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World" presents the early Hannon eye twinkle and is reminiscent of previous creations like "Bernice Bobs Her Hair." Here Hannon suggests he needs a TV investigation just to understand his girlfriend. Yes, Victory for the Comic Muse has its funny moments, its sad asides, and some of the now standard Nyman minimalist moments, but in the Divine Comedy's overall discography it's a rather slight and often flat affair with unfortunate suggestions that Hannon might have milked the comic cow dry.© Tim DiGravina /TiVo

Are We There Yet?

Carla Bley

Jazz - Released June 21, 1999 | Watt

Carla Bley and Steve Swallow's third outing as a duo captures them live on their 1998 European tour sounding fabulous. Three of the seven tunes are by Bley: "Major," an infectious triadic shell game; "King Korn," a whimsical run through rhythm changes in the keys of E flat and C; and "Musique Mecanique," an ambitious three-part suite adapted from Bley's 1978 album of the same name. Three other compositions are by Swallow: "A Dog's Life," a Ray Charles-style tune in a slow 6/8; "Satie for Two," an affecting tribute to the minimalist composer; and "Playing With Water," a bossa nova previously performed by Swallow's 1991 sextet. The only non-original of the set is Kurt Weill's ballad "Lost in the Stars," which Bley and Swallow play beautifully.Bley's piano is remarkably versatile and passionate, and Swallow's signature electric bass sound tickles the senses, especially during the Weill song where one moment he makes the room vibrate with low notes, and the next reaches the stratosphere of his range with singing melodies.© David R.
