Mirapolis

Rone

Ambient - Released November 3, 2017 | InFiné

Hi-Res
Christmas falls on the 3rd November this year for electro fans. Because each time Erwan Castex a.k.a. Rone drops an album it really is a gift. This disc comes four years after Tohu Bohu (his magnificent missive written and posted from Berlin, which allowed him to make a name for himself and impose a style of his own) and two years after the beautiful and bewildering album Creatures. This gifted sound engineer has now added another floor to his electronic tower of Babel. And yes, it is indeed this famous construction from The Book of Genesis that is the best symbol for his work. Far from the dancefloor, Rone’s music is a multistory building in which we have already met people as diverse as Etienne Daho, François Marry without her Atlas Mountains, the unusual cellist Gaspar Claus, the equally elusive pianist Bachar Mar-Khalifé, Bryce Dessner from The National or even the avant-garde Japanese trumpeter Toshinori Kondo… For this fourth work, whose liner notes bear the name of Michel Gondry and his son Paul, Rone has assembled John Stanier, Claus and Dessner from the group Vacarme once again, as well as the slam poet Saul Williams, the quirky Baxter Dury, the Israeli Noga Erez and Kazu Makino from Blonde Redhead. Taken independently, each piece on Mirapolis differs from the next. But Rone, being a sound architect, manages to homogenize all these sound textures and ambiences to make for a disorienting sensory trip. Sometimes electro is not the dominant genre but this doesn’t matter as it’s always Rone who comes out on top. © MD/Qobuz

In A Tidal Wave Of Mystery

Capital Cities

Alternative & Indie - Released June 4, 2013 | Capital Cities

The full-length debut album from Los Angeles' Capital Cities, 2013's In a Tidal Wave of Mystery is an infectious mix of synth-heavy dance pop. These musically ambitious productions touch upon '80s new wave and '70s disco in the band’s own unique, lo-fi way. In fact, part of the album’s charm is that many of the songs here sound like keyboard-heavy demos that were perhaps meant to be fleshed out with various instruments but never were. Hence, the preponderance of synth trumpet, digital strings, and other extremely old-school-sounding electronic samples. The result is that the album brings to mind the early, innovative electronic music of artists who were earnestly taken with the explicitly computer-generated sounds of the modern wonder that was the synthesizer, like Level 42 and Giorgio Moroder. In that sense, In a Tidal Wave of Mystery fits in nicely alongside the works of such similarly inclined indie pop contemporaries as AM & Shawn Lee, MGMT, Phoenix, and the Strokes' Julian Casablancas' solo work. Featured on the album is the Top Ten radio hit "Safe and Sound."© Matt Collar /TiVo

Origami Harvest

Ambrose Akinmusire

Jazz - Released October 12, 2018 | Blue Note Records

Hi-Res Distinctions Indispensable JAZZ NEWS - 5 Sterne Fono Forum Jazz
After two staggering studio albums (When the Heart Emerges Glistening in 2011 and The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier to Paint in 2014) and one brilliant live album (A Rift in Decorum in 2017), all three released on Blue Note, Ambrose Akinmusire has changed gear with a multifaceted and ambitious work that mixes jazz, string quartet, poetry and rap. The Californian trumpeter has never been a stranger to taking a step into the unknown, but Origami Harvest is without a doubt his most daring work to date. And the most mind-boggling! At his side, pianist Sam Harris, drummer Marcus Gilmore, saxophonist Walter Smith III and, rather more unexpected, the Mivos string quartet and Victor Vázquez (alias Kool A.D.), previously an MC with hip-hop outfit Das Racist.Jazz, free, classical, funk, rap, soul and spoken word all collide here. One might criticise Akinmusire for his 360° vision. This composition is bursting at the seams as it moves from free jazz to R&B before returning to contemporary music or funk. The radical nature of the project can be explained by its origins. Judd Greenstein from the New York Ecstatic Music Festival, who commissioned the work, asked the Californian for his craziest idea. “I wanted to do a project about extremes and putting things that are seemingly opposite right next to each other", Akinmusire explained .Despite everything, there is a real fluidity to Origami Harvest, the composition is a perfect mirror for the time in which we live - its contradictions, its violence, its frenetic changes of pace and style... "Origami,” said Akinmusire, “refers to the different ways black people, especially men, have to bend, whether in failure or to fit a mould. Then I had a son while writing this and I thought about these cycles repeating: Harvest." You'll need to take a little time to digest such a creative flood. In an era unused to pauses, contemplation and taking one's time, Origami Harvest is a curious case. It's a blast of fresh air which does you good even as it baffles you. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Sremm 4 Life

Rae Sremmurd

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released April 7, 2023 | Eardruma Records - Interscope Records

Hi-Res
Multi-platinum Mississippi rap duo Rae Sremmurd went relatively silent for five years following their 2018 triple-LP SR3MM. Five years is a lifetime in commercial rap terms, and their fourth studio album Sremm4Life reunites brothers Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee (along with longtime producer/label boss Mike WiLL Made-It) for a collection of concise, immediate tracks that make up for lost time. While SR3MM was solid, its triple threat of an album’s worth of collaborative tracks and dual solo albums from each of the brothers made it a lot to digest. Sremm4Life architects its flow to do more with individual pieces. Album-opener “Origami (Hotties)” eases listeners in with its slow, drunken trap pop beat before ramping up to the hypnotizing synth horns and Young Thug feature of the ceaselessly hooky “Royal Flush” or the throwback party bop of “Tanisha (Pump That)” complete with DJ scratching that’s rarely heard in streaming-era rap songs. Future shows up to add some mist and mystique to the already vaporous boom of “Activate,” and “YMCA” almost approaches synth pop territory. Bombastic closer “ADHD Anthem (2 Many Emotions)” continues the rock star energy Rae Sremmurd have been cultivating since their early days, with passionate melodic vocals about mental health struggles gliding over a chaotic uptempo instrumental. The songs that make up Sremm4Life are lean, purposeful, and to the point. One of Rae Sremmurd’s greatest strengths has always been their ability to create incessantly catchy material and deliver it with a casual confidence that makes their meticulously crafted hits seem effortless. That gift is clearer than ever on Sremm4Life.© Fred Thomas /TiVo
