One Love

Bob Marley & The Wailers

Reggae - Released February 9, 2024 | Tuff Gong

Hi-Res
Highly anticipated since the biopic trend took over Hollywood, the film depicting the Jamaican icon’s ascension to superstardom has been fully approved by the Marley family, with Kingsley Ben-Adir in the role of Bob and eldest son Ziggy as executive producer. To seal the deal, the label Tuff Gong has released a “soundtrack” to the film, which unsurprisingly showcases a number of Bob Marley’s hits, resembling an encore to Legend, with the eternal classics that are “Get Up, Stand Up,” “I Shot the Sheriff,” “Natural Mystic,” “Is This Love” and “Redemption Song”.We also hear the famous version of “No Woman, No Cry” at London’s Rainbow Theatre on June 4, 1977 – a concert that was seized upon for reissues in both 2020 and 2022. From the film, we also find “So Jah S’eh” and a version of “War/No More Trouble” with backing vocals by Naomi Cowan in place of the I-Threes, the new sensation of Jamaican reggae incarnating Marcia Griffiths in the film, and Anna-Sharé Blake, protégée of Protoje, playing Judy Mowatt. On keyboard for this version is Aston Barrett Junior, who takes on the role of his father, Family Man, legendary bassist, orchestra conductor, and scorned composer of the Wailers, who passed away February 3rd, 2024, a few days before the release of One Love, and whose immense career would also be deserving of its own film. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Illadelph Halflife

The Roots

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released January 1, 1996 | DGC

For the Roots' second major-label album, the band apparently recognized the weaknesses of the debut, since there are several songs which provide more structure than previous jam-session efforts -- two even became R&B radio hits. But for all its successes, Illadelph Halflife mostly repeats the long-winded jams and loose improvisatory feel that characterized Do You Want More?!!!??!. And while these songs may sound great live (a field where the Roots excel over any other rap act), in a living-room setting listeners need hooks on which to focus.© John Bush /TiVo

Live At The Roxy - The Complete Concert

Bob Marley & The Wailers

World - Released January 1, 2003 | Tuff Gong

Bob Marley and the Wailers were on tour promoting their newly released album, Rastaman Vibration, when they arrived at the Roxy nightclub in Hollywood, CA, for a performance on May 26, 1976. At the height of their early American fame -- Rastaman Vibration would become their only Top Ten album in the U.S. -- they were also a seasoned concert act. They played the same songs featured on their compelling album Live! (a U.K. hit not yet released in America at that time), plus songs from their new record, before a small audience that combined acolytes with industry figures. In 2002, when Island Records issued its Rastaman Vibration (Deluxe Edition), the ten songs that made up the main part of the show were included as part of the package's second disc; a notable addition that gave a good sense of the band playing the new material. Of course, you had to buy the whole set to get the show. Here, in a move to alleviate that situation, and also create yet another piece of Marley product, Island put out the Roxy show separately; expanding it to two discs by including the encore, which consists of a performance of "Positive Vibration," and a 24-minute medley comprising "Get Up Stand Up," "No More Trouble," and "War." Completists will have to buy it to get the second disc, while others will have another Marley concert on disc. So, the release addresses both Marley's rabid fan base and, potentially, newcomers. It's good marketing, but you can't help thinking that at this point, Island is tipping over the edge of exploiting consumers by repeatedly repackaging the same material instead of serving the public. Still, the encore is the hottest part of the show and, once you've heard it, it's hard to imagine the concert without it.© William Ruhlmann /TiVo

Shake the Roots

Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown

Rock - Released September 9, 2022 | Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown

Whilst his albums have always garnered excellent reviews and well-deserved commercial success, Tyler Bryant has rarely been fully satisfied due to some misunderstandings with his former record label. Determined to afford himself greater artistic freedom, the artist decided to launch his own label. This decision, according to him, will not only allow him to record the songs he really wants to make but also to respect an increasingly loyal audience that he considers intelligent, open-minded and willing to follow him and his artistic endeavours. Not only is Shake the Roots a real rock’n’roll record with a more raw and authentic sound, but a collection of catchy and unifying songs that don’t need to be overly produced to shine. This record is all about the art of inspired song writing. From the opening boogie rock track, ‘Bare Bones’, to the bluesy closing track, ‘Midnight Oil’ (and let’s not overlook the hard rock contours and slide guitars of the massive ‘Ghostrider’), there’s not a single lapse in Bryant’s judgement. This six-string duo is comprised of Tyler Bryant and his faithful companion, Graham Whitford (yes, yes, the son of Aerosmith’s Brad Whitford), who are both firing on all cylinders here. The two guitarists weave their unique styles together, but always to good effect, creating a perfect balance that proves it’s possible to make a great album without overdoing it or giving in to syrupy sounds and over-polished production. The bare basics are all a record like this needs - Tyler Bryant has known it for a long time. With Shake the Roots, he’s achieved what he’s always had in mind.  © Chief Brody/Qobuz

Roots

Randall Goosby

Classical - Released June 25, 2021 | Decca Music Group Ltd.

Hi-Res Booklet
Quite a few artists of African American background issue recitals of familiar material by Black composers, but violinist Randall Goosby's Roots is something different on several counts, and it's a fresh outing. First of all, Goosby mixes works by African American composers with those simply influenced by African American music, a seemingly simple idea, but how often does one hear Gershwin bumping up against William Grant Still? Second, his choices are not the obvious ones. Sure, there are some hits here, most prominently the excerpts from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess arranged by Jascha Heifetz. Goosby, a student of Itzhak Perlman, among others, nails these, but most of the music is not so common. The rapidly emerging Florence B. Price is represented by two works. William Grant Still's Suite for violin and piano is one of his most African American-inflected works, with a gorgeous slow movement. Perhaps the biggest find here is a contemporary piece, Blue/s Forms, of Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson (who is named after Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, also represented here). This solo violin work is a fascinating minimalist treatment of the blues unlike anything else out there. The finale is Dvořák's Violin Sonatina in G major, Op. 100, far less often heard than other works from the composer's American period, but fully their equal. Goosby is too closely miked here, but that is the end of the list of complaints about this fascinating and promising recital.© TiVo

Exit Wounds

The Wallflowers

Alternative & Indie - Released July 9, 2021 | New West Records

Hi-Res
It's been 25 years since the Wallflowers hit it big with Bringing Down the Horse, a collection of songs—produced by the terrific T-Bone Burnett—that seemed like lightning in a bottle when the band never repeated its success. But in 2020, the movie The King of Staten Island reminded the world just how irresistible the album's "One Headlight" is. Seeing frontman Jakob Dylan join Beck, Cat Power and Fiona Apple onstage in the documentary Echo in the Canyon stirred a certain nostalgia. And the '90s are a huge influence in indie rock and alt-pop right now. The time seems right for a Wallflowers revival, and on Exit Wounds—their first album in nine years—they may not quite capture that lightning again, but there are traces of that old magic. You can hear it in the upbeat jangle of "Roots and Wings," with Dylan putting some swagger into lyrics like "I showed you how to swing/ I showed you how to strut/ That's my mojo you're using/ That's my wine getting you drunk." (The song also underscores how much more a matured Dylan sounds like Springsteen than like his dad, Bob.) It's also in the easy ramble of "I Hear the Ocean (When I Wanna Hear Trains)" and pretty-girl-in-trouble ballad "The Daylight Between Us," with weary lyrics like "The candles we lit had melted on the cake as if they were over it." There are surprises, too, though. "Move the River" revels in dub rhythms. The wonderful Shelby Lynne shows up—serving harmony on the pedal-steel country-rock of "Maybe Your Heart's Not It No More," taking a verse on the smoky ballad "Darlin' Hold On," and offering a brandy-rich counterpoint to Dylan's sandpaper rasp on all four tracks she graces. And "Who's That Man Walking 'Round my Garden" finds the usually stoic Dylan in a Jagger mood as the band stomps with funk drums, dirty guitar and the live-wire keys sound that is a signature of producer Butch Walker. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz

Russian Roots

Katharina Konradi

Mélodies - Released February 25, 2022 | Chandos

Hi-Res Booklet
"Russian Roots" is the debut recording of Trio Gaspard for Chandos Records, for which the group is joined by the soprano Katharina Konradi in a diverse and rewarding programme that explores the Russian influence across almost 200 years of music. A selection of Russian folksongs set by Beethoven, Shostakovich’s First Piano Trio and Seven Romances on Poems by Blok, and Weinberg’s Jewish Songs form the backbone of the recital. These are complemented by vocalises (wordless songs) by Stravinsky, Rachmaninoff, Gubaidulina, and Auerbach. Katharina Konradi is the first soprano from Kyrgyzstan to have achieved an international career as a Lieder, concert, and opera singer. A BBC New Generation Artist, she won the Deutsche Musikwettbewerb in 2016 and became a member of Staatsoper Hamburg in 2018, where she sings the major soprano roles. Founded in 2010, Trio Gaspard has become one of the most sought-after piano trios of its generation, whose members are praised for their unique and fresh approach to the score. The Trio is regularly invited to perform at leading concert halls throughout the world. It has an impressive history of international festival appearances, and each member also continues to pursue a successful solo career. © Chandos

Chant Down Babylon

Bob Marley

World - Released January 1, 1999 | Island Records (The Island Def Jam Music Group / Universal Music)

Sometime during the '90s, overdubbing classic recordings with new instruments and vocals became an accepted practice, since the intent was to introduce legendary artists to a contemporary audience. Evidently, these good intentions made these albums better than, say, overdubbing strings on Hank Williams' spare recordings after his death, since that was just crass commercial pandering and this was noble missionary work. Chant Down Babylon -- an attempt to refashion Bob Marley recordings as urban and hip-hop (and, in the case of "Roots, Rock, Reggae" with Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, rock) for a new generation, based on the presumption that, since Marley never reached the broad African-American audience he desired during his lifetime, there was no time like 1999 to try it again -- is arguably the most extreme reworking to date. Unlike many of these sort of recordings, the original musical base is not completely discarded, as the resulting vocal and instrumental overdubs are meshed with the originals. There are a few tracks, such as the Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill contributions, that work particularly well.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Run Come Save Me

Roots Manuva

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released August 1, 2001 | Big Dada

Distinctions The Qobuz Ideal Discography - Sélection du Mercury Prize
Just when the British hip-hop community seemed on its last legs, the victim of an over-powerful American marketing machine, Roots Manuva hit the stratosphere with his second record, the nearly Mercury prize-winning Run Come Save Me. A stunning record, it balanced the stark digital soul of British ragga with lurching beats, and Rodney Smith's star-making delivery and wide-ranging repertoire. "Witness (1 Hope)" earned its place as the best British rap single since Tricky's "Aftermath," while "Bashment Boogie," "Hol' It Up," and "Artical" were distinctive, hard-hitting, surprisingly groovy performances. As on his LP debut, Brand New Second Hand, Smith also spent time reflecting on his religious upbringing, with a distinctly unhumorous track ("Sinny Sin Sins," never mind the title) that dealt with his heavily disciplinarian father. And where the productions on debut sounded thin and tame, for Run Come Save Me he hit another level entirely with tracks by either Bennett or RM himself, whose Blow's Yard Studio quickly took its place next to New York's legendary D&D Studios as a home to distinctive underground rap. Roots Manuva handled every type of song with flowing confidence and a bemused air, whether it was a club jam or a message track. © John Bush /TiVo
