HEROES & VILLAINS

Metro Boomin

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released December 2, 2022 | Republic Records

Hi-Res
Every time the star American rap producer Metro Boomin releases a new project, he always brings out the big guns. After the incredible Savage Mode II in collaboration with 21 Savage released in 2020, Heroes & Villains brings together heavyweights of the genre to pay tribute to the producer’s status: Future, Travis $cott, 21 Savage, Young Thug, A$AP Rocky and Gunna. What a line-up. However, Metro Boomin does more than simply deliver a selection of his best productions and watch big names bring them to life: these are powerful tracks, with variation and versatility. The monstrous bass on ‘Too Many Nights’, the soul sample on ‘Umbrella’, and the almost melodic drum machines on ‘All the Money’ all broaden the feel of this album, whilst retaining a great sense of refinement throughout. You can really sense a visceral desire to fight, a will to prove and confirm his status. This level of audacity is reserved for a few beatmakers who have every reason to be brimming with confidence. Heroes & Villains is perhaps Metro Boomin’s most complex project, as well as his most moving. And it might just be one of his best. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz

HEROES & VILLAINS

Metro Boomin

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released December 2, 2022 | Republic Records

Hi-Res
Heroes & Villains is the worthy and meticulously assembled sequel to Not All Heroes Wear Capes, producer Metro Boomin's chart-topping 2018 album debut as a headliner. As on the preceding set, 21 Savage and Travis Scott are key players, and this time, longtime Metro partner Future is involved, appearing on as many tracks (four) as his contemporaries. Aided by over a dozen co-producers, Metro mostly sticks to subtle variations on his reliably heady and cinematic trap sounds. The deviations are usually effective, none more so than "Creepin'," a suitably downcast Weeknd (and 21 Savage) collaboration based partly on Mario Winans' 2004 hit "I Don't Wanna Know." © TiVo Staff /TiVo

Wet

Barbra Streisand

International Pop - Released October 1, 1979 | Columbia

A concept album of sorts in the sense that each of the songs has something to do with water, Wet was the third of a trilogy of albums produced by Gary Klein in a soft rock vein increasingly set in the synth-pop style of the late '70s and early '80s. The concept allowed for a range of material, from old favorite Harold Arlen's "Come Rain or Come Shine" to an updated version of the old Bobby Darin hit "Splish Splash." The album's number one hit was "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)," a disco duet with Donna Summer. But most of the songs were newly written ballads attempting to re-create the "Evergreen"/"The Way We Were" style of Streisand's recent hits. "Kiss Me in the Rain''" grazed the Top 40. Yet there was enough variety on the album to make it an average Streisand outing.© William Ruhlmann /TiVo

Santa Claus Symphony / Niagara Symphony

William Henry Fry

Classical - Released November 6, 2000 | Naxos

Booklet
This release by the Scottish National Symphony Orchestra under conductor Tony Rowe garnered a good deal of attention in 2000 when it first appeared. However, that hasn't translated into increased awareness of composer William Henry Fry (1813-1864), the first American to write large-scale orchestral works and, one learns here, possibly the first composer anywhere to write for the saxophone, in the so-called Santa Claus Symphony (in full: Santa Claus, Christmas Symphony). That work is hardly restricted to Santa Claus, a colorful work encompassing the birth of Christ, a Christmas party, a traveler lost in a snowstorm, Santa dropping down a chimney, a woodwind serenade, including the soprano saxophone, and a finale with strings intoning O Come, All Ye Faithful. It is certainly in the great American tradition of too much of everything, but it is exceeded by the Niagara Symphony, in which Fry deploys 11 timpani and atonal swirling strings to depict the majesty of the falls. These works had a good deal of popularity at the time; Americans who looked to Germany as the font of musical wisdom disdained them, but the French conductor Jullien praised and programmed them on tour. The Macbeth Overture and the short piece The Breaking Heart are a bit less interesting, although they're competent works with hints of Verdi and Berlioz; Fry's métier was a spectacle. The brash quality of his music makes one think of Ives, although it is unlikely that Ives knew about them; by the end of the 19th century, Fry had been almost completely forgotten. This album remains a worthwhile attempt to revive him, and a major U.S. orchestra, perhaps at a Fourth of July concert, could do wonders with this unusual repertory.© James Manheim /TiVo
