The Amazing Adventures Of Simon Simon

John Surman

Jazz - Released January 1, 1981 | ECM

John Surman (on baritone, soprano, bass clarinet and synthesizer) meets up with drummer Jack DeJohnette (who also plays congas and electric piano) for this typically introspective and spacy ECM set. Surman's playing (especially on baritone and bass clarinet) during nine group originals is worth hearing, but this is not one of his more essential outings.© Scott Yanow /TiVo

Sin Palabras (Without Words)

Nestor Torres

Jazz - Released January 1, 2004 | Heads Up

With 1990's near-fatal boating accident now well behind him, Nestor Torres offered up this package of Latin-accented, hip-hop-tinged smooth jazz, assembling 11 tracks with several producers and production teams. In contrast to his previous album, My Latin Soul, a collection of Latin standards, most of the material here comes from Torres in league with his production staff. The two numbers that are not originals are "Contigo Apprendi," where Torres' flute dances particularly playfully at the close, and the Alejandro Sanz Latin hit "Regálame la Silla Donde Te Espere." Yet the further one explores this collection, the less one becomes involved with the soft-focused keyboards and softcore electronically programmed rhythms. Torres is always easy on the ear, impeccable in technique, occasionally evoking the then-recently departed ghost of Herbie Mann. But this material is pitched only slightly above the level of pleasant, slightly funky background music for driving along the Florida coast -- or any coast. Mi Alma Latina (My Latin Soul)

Nestor Torres

Jazz - Released August 7, 2002 | Shanachie

Much like Gloria Estefan, whose hit "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" he covers here, the veteran Grammy-winning flutist from Puerto Rico has too often compromised his Latin roots in search of contemporary jazz success. This mostly extraordinary project proves that he's still in deep touch with his heritage, even if he's more or less interpreting Latin classics rather than digging deeper to write his own. While he's a bit restrained on the Estefan tune and romantic pieces like "Besame Mucho," he has a blast blowing his percussive, airy melodies on the many festive jam sessions. His cover of Santana's "Smooth" is slower than the original and a bit more tropical, romantic, and balmy than hard rockin' -- but irresistible nonetheless. Torres recalls his days as a young musician in the '60s with the strutting Willie Bobo street festival-flavored tune "Spanish Grease," interacting beautifully with Abel Pabon's dancing piano. His flute acts as pepper, then part of a brass section over the wild piano foundations of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man." His flute swirling over Teddy Mullet's trumpet and trombone turns Tito Puente's "Ran Kan Kan" into a wild party that just ends too soon. It's all pretty amazing, but why didn't he get real hip and try to cover a Jennifer Lopez tune? © Jonathan Widran /TiVo

Treasures Of The Heart

Nestor Torres

Jazz - Released May 18, 1999 | Shanachie

Nestor Torres' liner notes describe the opening track, "Musing," as "the best of both worlds" (combining his Latin jazz roots with smooth jazz sensibilities), but that tag could apply almost universally. On that song, Torres' flute dances and skips over an easy hip-hop vibe before Latin-flavored synth horns begin rising. The melody cruises on over a feisty mix of that urban flow and David Forestier's heavy percussion, before Torres and keyboardist David Mann do a festive improvisational swirl over the same grooves. On "Luna Latina," Teddy Mulet's bold trombone arrangements forge a Latin big-band playground for Torres and vibist Dave Samuels to trade sassy lines over. "Tropichic" kicks that energy level up another notch, with Torres piping his way over a brisk samba groove and giving way in the middle for a blazing cat-and-mouse improv by pianist Jean Michael and percussionist Richard Bona. Even the more in-the-pocket smooth jazz tunes have a little touch of the exotic Latin flavors. The title track would be a straightforward soul ballad led by flute if not for the peppy flamenco guitar solo by Marc Antoine and Torres' percussive interaction with some gentle soundscaping. And "Velvet Nights," featuring the gentle soprano sax lines of Kim Waters, speeds up just a bit midway through for a mini-jam between Torres and percussionist Edwin Bonilla. Torres even takes a well-worn cover tune like "Ain't No Sunshine" and gives it a jungly, sparsely arranged Brazilian feeling. © Jonathan Widran /TiVo

Talk to Me

Nestor Torres

Latin - Released January 1, 1996 | Sony Music Latin

In the tradition of Dave Valentin and Herbie Mann, Nestor Torres makes an impressive bid for Latin jazz stardom on Talk To Me, which blends his spirited, peppery and melodic runs with the veteran production expertise of Andre Fischer. As impressive as Torres is throughout, however, too many of the arrangements are straight out of Fischer's lush but softhearted Unforgettable phase, leading to some very quiet moments in between the much more interesting flashes of genuine energy. Too many ballads, including tender but staid covers of Elton John and David Gates classics, take away from Torres' ability to truly challenge all rhythmic possibilities of his distinctive windstyle. Program the disc through the orchestral sheen, and you come up with the essence of Nestor's soul, which lies in the fast paced worlds of "Forest Rain" (featuring Steve Reid like soundscaping) and the tasty, rhythmic "Sabroso!" An attractive listen overall, just a bit tame too often in the face of the much more impressive dynamics.© Jonathan Widran /TiVo
