Can We Do Tomorrow Another Day?

Galen & Paul

Alternative & Indie - Released May 19, 2023 | Sony Music CG

Hi-Res Distinctions Qobuzissime
Sonny & Cher, Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg, Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood, Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris, Les Paul & Mary Ford, She & Him... The history of popular music is full of mythical mixed duos. And here, a new tandem makes an entry greeted by a Qobuzissime! On one side, a gold-plated rock icon who occasionally comes out of his lair: Paul Simonon, ex-bassist of the Clash (that's him on the cover of London Calling!) and more recently member of The Good, The Bad And The Queen with Damon Albarn and the late Tony Allen. On the other, the folkeuse Galen Ayers, daughter of Kevin Ayers, the eccentric British co-founder of Soft Machine. The album that these two have just recorded is however light years away from their history-laden resumes. From the very first notes of Can We Do Tomorrow Another Day?, Galen & Paul play the troubadour card, the simple—not simplistic—walk between styles, landscapes and territories. Viscerally cosmopolitan and even European (they sing in English and Spanish, and talk about Paris), these ten tracks play it nonchalant with a street singer side. Mariachi fragrances, reggae sounds, the carefree Italian and French variety of the '60s—the concept of Galen & Paul is retro without being old-fashioned, funny without being potache, poetic without being cliché.The duo is supported by impeccable musicians (guitarist Simon Tong—another one of Simonon's The Good… bandmates, jazz drummer Seb Rochford and Dan Donovan on keyboards), and by Tony Visconti, Bowie's producer who is more used to "big sound" records. And then there is Damon Albarn who comes to blow in his melodica on some tracks. In 38 minutes, Galen & Paul take us around the world, a warm, benevolent, nostalgic elsewhere that feels good. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Song Book

Ella Fitzgerald

Vocal Jazz - Released January 1, 1956 | Verve Reissues

Hi-Res
Ella Fitzgerald had the ability to personalize some of the most recognizable material from the foremost songwriters in American popular music history. In this instance, the combination of Cole Porter's words and Fitzgerald's interpretation of them created one of the most sought after sessions in vocal history -- embraced by jazz and pop fans alike, transcending boundaries often associated with those genres. Originally released in 1956 on the Verve label, such standards as "Night and Day," "I Love Paris," "What Is This Thing Called Love," "I've Got You Under My Skin," "You're the Top," and "Love for Sale" secured one of Ella Fitzgerald's crowning moments. The success of these early Porter (and previous Gershwin) sessions brought about numerous interpretations of other songbooks throughout the next several years including those of Rodgers and Hart, Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, and Irving Berlin.© Al Campbell /TiVo

I Love You, Paris

Shirley Horn

Jazz - Released March 7, 1992 | Verve Reissues

The highlights of a 2½-hour concert recorded in Paris, this CD has even more ballads than a typical Shirley Horn set because, due to the monitor malfunctioning during the second half of the performance, Horn chose to stick exclusively to ballads during that portion of the show. Accompanied by bassist Charles Ables and drummer Steve Williams, Horn is in peak form throughout this program, often sounding exquisite and using silence and pauses quite expertly. Among the highlights are "Wouldn't It Be Loverly," "Do It Again," a medley of "I Loves You Porgy" and "Here Comes De Honey Man," and a lengthy version of "A Song for You" that eventually becomes "Goodbye." Highly recommended.© Scott Yanow /TiVo

The Essential Artie Shaw

Artie Shaw

Jazz - Released June 27, 2005 | Bluebird - Legacy

The Essential Artie Shaw collects 38 tracks recorded between 1938 and 1953 for Bluebird. The compilation does an admiral job of showcasing Shaw's skills as bandleader, composer, showman, and musician. The focus of the disc is mainly instrumentals, both in small-group and orchestral settings, with a few tracks spotlighting the vocals of Helen Forrest, Hot Lips Page, Tony Pastor, and Billie Holiday. Along with the abundance of swing standards from the era like "Nightmare," "Frenesi," and "Begin the Beguine," the combination of big band and strings allows for colorful and intricate arrangements on "April in Paris," "Any Old Time," "All the Things You Are," and the Shaw-penned "Concerto for Clarinet (Pts. 1-2)," finding the unique composer on par with Stan Kenton. Collectors should take note of the previously unissued 1936 take of "Streamline."© Al Campbell /TiVo

Lovesick

Randall Scotting

Vocal Music (Secular and Sacred) - Released February 10, 2023 | Signum Records

Hi-Res
This release by countertenor Randall Scotting has a strong program; perhaps no one else has offered a works-on-a-theme set of this kind, and the pieces gain from being grouped together with others of their ilk. The songs are not just of the Dowland melancholy type but include a variety of moods from perhaps misplaced optimism and even humor to the grimmest of the grim, Thomas Ravenscroft's version of the traditional ballad The Three Ravens. There are French and Italian pieces as well as English ones, and the American faux-Scots Black is the color of my true love's hair seems to fit right in. In fact, the music emerges in Scotting's hands as a kind of subgenre, with the various types of piece in dialogue. Scotting has been better known for Baroque opera up to now, and he has a powerful voice that at times somewhat overpowers the material, but he has a feeling for these songs, and several other factors work in the album's favor, one being the presence of veteran lutenist Stephen Stubbs, who gets a few elegant solo turns. Another is the sheer beauty of Scotting's voice, which comes through no matter what the material. The graphics have a sense of fun (and one can say this regardless of the subject matter). Listeners are likely to enjoy this release, which is billed as an anti-Valentine's item. Gift it to someone you don't love!© James Manheim /TiVo

I Love You All The Time: Live At The Olympia Paris

Eagles Of Death Metal

Rock - Released August 4, 2017 | Mercury Studios

I Love You All the Time: Live at the Olympia in Paris chronicles Eagles of Death Metal's first headlining gig in Paris since the terrorist attack at their November 13, 2015 show at the Bataclan left 89 dead. As part of the band's Nos Amis ("our friends") tour, this February 2016 date reaffirms their affection for Paris audiences. Jesse Hughes, Josh Homme, and company find ways of honoring the Bataclan victims (they take a moment of silence during "I Only Want You") while keeping the hard-rocking energy high. It helps that Eagles of Death Metal are a more straight-ahead band on-stage than they are in the studio, and their renditions of the title track, "Complexity," "Cherry Cola," and "I Want You So Hard (Boy's Bad News)" are among the standouts. Other highlights from the generous set list include the country-tinged respite "Bag o' Miracles" and "Save a Prayer," the Duran Duran cover that delivered one of Zipper Down's finest moments and became a charity single benefiting Bataclan victims and survivors.© Heather Phares /TiVo

Sonny Rollins & Co. 1964

Sonny Rollins

Jazz - Released January 1, 1964 | RCA Bluebird

This CD from the Bluebird reissue series fills a lot of gaps in Sonny Rollins' discography. The 13 selections are taken from six different sessions from 1964. The personnel changes from date to date, with either Ron Carter or Bob Cranshaw on bass and Roy McCurdy or Mickey Roker on drums, along with pianist Herbie Hancock on five songs and guitarist Jim Hall on three others. Some of the music comprises alternate takes, and in contrast to a rambling 16-minute version of "Now's the Time," a few of the briefer songs (seven are under four minutes) shut down prematurely. However, the great tenor's improvisations are consistently fascinating, as he reconciles his avant-garde flights to the standards he is performing. "Autumn Nocturne" is a high point.© Scott Yanow /TiVo
